Identification haircut: What Zanetor’s ex-boyfriend told UK authorities about the Rawlingses

The life of the Rawlings’s is characterised by many tales. One of them was told by Selassie O’Sullivan-Djentuh, the alleged ex-boyfriend of Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, the first daughter of the late Jerry John Rawlings (Rtd.) and Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings.

Selassie who at the time was enjoying a very good relationship with the daughter of the former first couple later got into their ‘bad’ books, and things turned around for him.

He broke his engagement with Zanetor when he suspected that she was having a secret relationship with her flying instructor.

In an account to the British Home Office when he was seeking asylum in the United Kingdom, Selassie in a five-page statement said “My relationship with Zanetor was not void of problems like in every relationship and I had a lot of pressure on me. Her condition for being in the relationship was a marriage which I promised and we exchanged rings.

“During the summer of 1998, her siblings told me about Zanetor’s suspicious behaviour. I was also told of this by some of her guards.

The suspicions were confirmed when I found out she was allegedly involved in a secret relationship with her flying instructor. I sent her rings back to her and broke the relationship. She became bitter especially after all efforts on her part to reconcile were unfruitful.”

Amidst an alleged death threat on his life, Selassie indicated he was charged with reckless driving by a public tribunal in Accra on March 5, 1999, after a big truck knocked him off his motorcycle.

“The driver of the vehicle refused to take me to the hospital and drove off. I was saved by a bystander who informed my friend who in turn informed my mother. I sustained several injuries and was bedridden for over eight weeks. The Police refused to divulge the identity of the driver and the manner in which the case was handled gave me grounds for suspicion.

“Initially, the Police claimed that the docket was missing, then later the investigator confided in me that it had been called to the Castle, the Office of the President. He said he was only following orders and had been instructed to be silent.

I was charged with reckless driving by a public tribunal on March 5, four months after the accident without the driver of the truck being charged. They later went on air to announce that I knocked a tipper truck and told the Police the motorbike belonged to the President. It was a big lie,” Selassie O’Sullivan-Djentuh narrated.

On January 15, 2000, Selassie said he was arrested by some soldiers sent from the Castle on his way to one of his mother’s estate in Accra.

He indicated that “upon arrival, I saw that there was a light blue van parked with two of my mother’s workers in it and five soldiers, some of the soldiers were in uniform. I approached the vehicle and enquired from the workers where they were going. The driver whom I later learnt to be W.O. Addo, ordered me to sit in the van.

I enquired where they were taking me […] I was hit several times by one of the soldiers with the butt of his rifle whilst the others slapped and kicked me to a pulp. They hit my head against the van several times before pushing me in. When I was in the van, I heard on the radio that they had got me…”

He continued: “I was driven to the Castle, the seat of government. I was dragged out of the van and beaten again. I was shaved with an old rusty blade and later with a broken bottle. I was told that the President had ordered my hair to be brought to him. They said the President had also ordered them to kill me and dump my body in the sea. I know that my hair was collected. I do not know whether it was actually taken to the President.

“I was questioned about my relationship with Zanetor and how many times I slept with her. I was beaten up several times throughout my detention. I was questioned about my knowledge of the Rawlings’s estate (their properties and buildings) and I told them I knew nothing. The guards insisted Zanetor told me certain secrets and they wanted to know how much I knew. W.O. Budu alleged since my mother had gone on air about my abduction, they could not do what they had planned but they could chase me to any country I run to and finish me off.”

Selassie O’Sullivan-Djentuh maintained that his parents faced trial on three false charges of assault and deceit of a public officer and offensive behaviour.

He indicated that his mother’s 35 houses were razed to the ground by the Police who claimed to be following orders from above.

“The judge handling the case refused to listen to my evidence to support my parents’ defence. My brother Macky could not go to school because of threats he had received over the phone as well as the rest of the family. We are all living in fear.”

Selassie O’Sullivan-Djentuh noted that he didn’t doubt that the late President wanted him to be killed because of a father’s great love for his daughter, he was aggrieved that their relationship ended abruptly.

FULL TEXT: Martin Amidu’s tribute to Jerry John Rawlings

Martin Amidu : I was taken aback on 29th September 2020 when after paying my condolences and expressing my experiential emotions of what a toll the passing of your dear mother could have had on you despite your old age, you told me that: “Chief, it is good it happened now. Chief you people never knew. Two or three years ago I was in bad shape with my health and I feared I would go before her.

At least I can now see her off.” I thought this was just one of the usual conversations between friends. With hindsight, I now realize that my dear and respected former PNDC Chairman and former President Emeritus Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings was indeed giving us notice of his impending exit from his earthly assignments after the burial of his dear mother and bidding us goodbye.

After the internment of his dear mother on 24th October 2020 he was compelled by affairs of state to truncate his period of rest to hold a series of mediation sessions with me, then the Special Prosecutor, in his office in Accra on 27th, 28th, and 29th October 2020.

Check This Out: Zylofon FM shut down after mask men threatened to kill Blakk Rasta on air

The late former President Emeritus Rawlings adjourned the first session to the next day, the 28th, and promised we would have lunch together. He kept his word and invited us to have lunch with him, adding that: “Chief” referring to me, “If you do not eat this lunch, I have arranged for us I will not be happy”. I reluctantly unmasked and helped myself to lunch with the Great Leader. Others were around for the lunch including his sister Mrs. Judy John Nkansah.

With hindsight, was this also in the nature of the last lunch/supper you had arranged in anticipation of your impending ancestral journey? We saw each other in his office briefly the next day, the 29th and he was all hope and assurance that justice and equity for Ghana was going to result from his mediation efforts on the 30th, the next day.

We could not meet in a face-to-face interaction again because contrary to our agreed expectations I had been compelled to execute one of the teachings of our revolutionary struggle – positive defiance without having warned him about my intentions to avoid any breakdown in any prospect of continuing mediation. I was not exhibiting the skills of being good at playing chess, as I am told you surmised, Comrade Rawlings. I was dead serious to be a loyal, faithful, and true revolutionary comrade serving the interest of the ordinary people of this country for whom you led us to render selfless service during our long years together as comrades and brothers.

I heard the news of your admission at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital on 4th November 2020. Then on the morning of 12th November 2020 somehow and intuitively, I got apprehensive and tried to find out how well you were doing. The prognosis was not gloomy. Then at 10:15 am I received by telephone the shocking and sad news that Ghanaians were yet to hear, from the United Kingdom, while I was in a scheduled meeting in my then Office. My mobile phones started ringing. “Is what I am hearing about former President Rawlings death true? Is it true….? Is it true…?”. My pretense of appearing self-composed despite the shocking and saddening news of your sudden demise to our ancestors could no longer continue during the meeting. I still cannot believe that you have left us, your comrades, so suddenly and put the whole nation in shock and despair.

The handing over of power by an African leader after two four-year terms under a Constitutional regime in Africa which you accomplished is a notable event in the political history of Ghana and Africa. Not all who have been Presidents or Heads of State have been of equal merit, or of at least equal importance. Presidents or Heads of State, like other men, vary in their importance on their generations and history. Some even in their lifetime never raised a ripple on the surface of politics and whose names are now forgotten by all but students of their period. Comrade Rawlings, you are one of those rare gems of this land who will never pass from the minds of men, but will live in their hearts, so long as Ghana endures because of the great qualities of your life.

His indomitable courage, all pervasive-humanity, and love for freedom for every Ghanaian are the qualities of our Great Leader for two decades as a revolutionary leader, and Constitutionally elected President under the 1992 Constitution he birthed that will forever make him to remain the most famous son of our homeland Ghana. He was the Head of State of four Governments which encompassed members of all the political persuasions of this country who were willing to serve under him and never was the nation’s trust in a man most amply justified. One such man who served under him as a matter of indisputable fact from an opposing political persuasion succeeded him immediately as President of Ghana on 7th January 2001. Historians in the future will analyze his strategy and tactics, and point, no doubt to his mistakes.

But we who lived through those days and served under him have this advantage over the historians of the future: that we can testify to the inspiration we received from his splendid courage, integrity, high moral character, and his matchless charisma and eloquence. In the line of Ghanaian and African statesmen who have graced our political history in my adult life, none has rendered such incomparable service, not only to his country but to the Pan Africanist movement, the African liberation struggle, the African continent, in general, and the world at large. None has striven so mightily in the sincere defence of truth and justice, and none has done more to uphold the standards of our national honour free from greed and corruption. Sure! Jerry John Rawlings was a hard taskmaster, but he was tolerant and magnanimous. He was the sort of man who drew the best out of all his subordinates, each of whom was proud to serve him to the utmost capacity. Even the traitors who once claimed to be his comrades who hurt him most unjustifiably before his demise attest in their traitorous books to his qualities as a statesman and a leader to whom they and the nation owe gratitude.

At this solemn and trying moment of grief and mourning my compassion and sympathy go out to his Consort and widow, the indefatigable former First Lady and founder of the 31st December Women’s Movement, and co-founder of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 1992, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, who stood by our departed Great Leader, in rain or shine. My heart goes out to that valiant woman, with famous blood of Ashanti royalty in her veins, who sustained the former Chairman and former President through all his travails and problems and brought up with their charm and beauty the three daughters and a son who mourn their Great father to-day. May the Holy Trinity in our Catholic faith grant her and her children strength to bear their sorrow.

We shared the one Catholic faith and at this sad and solemn moment, I cannot find words in which to bid you goodbye till the resurrection. I am only left to say: Lord grant eternal rest to your son, Jerry John, and let perpetual light shine upon him. O Lord hear my prayer and let my cry come to you. May he rest in peace. Amen!

How Rawlings’ family ‘cleared’ reports of other children during his funeral

0

n the lead up to the final funeral rites of Ghana’s first President of the Fourth Republic, Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings, there were reports of the former leader bearing children with other women outside his marriage with Nana Konadu.

Two women have so far emerged from the shadows with claims of being biological offsprings of the former president.

The first, a 52-year-old woman by name Abigail Mawutor Rawlings who claims to be the first daughter made headlines after she popped up following the demise of Mr Rawlings.

During media interactions madam Mawutor alleged that in 2003, she was bribed by veteran actress and TV personality, Grace Omaboe also known as Maame Dokono, to flee the country in order not to be assassinated.

The second, one Kate Yeboah also alleged that former President Rawlings met her mother at Breman Asikuma where she resided, leading to a relationship that resulted in her production.

A 50-year-old man from Nkoranza, Akwasi Aboagye also came out to claim affiliations with the former president.

ghbase.com reported that Mr Aboagye alleged to be the first son of Mr Rawlings. He recounted in an interview that his mother identified the late statesman as his biological father; adding that the former first couple were aware.

To buttress the already existing fact, however, during the tributes by the children of the former President, the order of their births was clearly labelled and outlined in the brochure.

Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings was labelled as “daughter and first child,” Yaa Asantewaa’s followed suit with the caption “daughter and second child.” Amina’s name came up closely after her older sisters with the inscription “Third child.”

“The fourth and only son” was the writing describing Kimarthi, whom many have described as a carbon copy of his father, Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings.

To further solidify their bond, Zanetor, the eldest daughter of Jerry and Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings gave the backgrounds to their names during her tribute to the former President.

Whilst eulogising her father, she noted how his drive for change and revolution reflected in all regards of his life, including the naming of his children.

Each of the four children she said, was named after a warrior, with the exception of the first whose name signified his quest to free the then ‘darkened’ country, from its gloom.

“Zanetor, an Ewe extraction name, a command meaning ‘darkness must cease’. A name you made and gave to your first child during the difficult times in Ghana as you hoped for an end to the corruption and economic hardship,” she explained.

For her younger siblings, she explained,

“Your second child, Yaa Asantewaa of Ashanti extraction in modern-day Ghana. You named her after Nana Yaa Asantewaa of Ejisu. A queen mother who led her people to war against the British colonialists after the king of the Ashanti kingdom was exiled.

“Your third child, Amina, a name of Arabic extraction. You named her after the warrior Queen Amina of Zaria, of Modern-day Nigeria. The first woman to become a leader in a male-dominated society. She expanded the territory of the Hausa people, to its largest border through conquest and opened trade routes among others.

“Kimathi, of Kikuyu extraction in Kenya. You named him after Dedan Kimathi, a Mau Mau military and spiritual leader who led his people, in several uprisings that led up to the independence struggle against the British Colonial rulers.”

Former President Rawlings was buried on Wednesday, January 27, 2021, at the Military Cemetery after a four-day state funeral ceremony was held in his honour.

He died on November 12, 2020, at age 73.

SC orders Mahama to file witness statements, arguments latest by Wednesday

The Supreme Court has ordered the petitioner in the ongoing Presidential Election Petition, John Dramani Mahama, to file his witness statements and arguments in response to the preliminary objection raised by the respondents latest by Wednesday, January 27.

The court also expressed dissatisfaction with the conduct of the petitioner and warned it will take appropriate actions against him if he fails to compile with the order to file the witness statements and arguments by the given deadline.

These actions, the court said could include the dismissal of the petition.

The court ordered during its last sitting on Wednesday, January 20, that all parties file their witness statement by Thursday noon, an order the counsel for the petitioner, Lawyer Tsatsu Tsikata contended was too short a time.

The court on Tuesday, January 26, did not grant any of the motions but rather ordered that its earlier orders be compiled with. It is worthy to note that the 1st Respondent Electoral Commission of Ghana and the 2nd Respondent Akufo-Addo have filed their witness statements as was ordered by the court on January 20.

Meanwhile, the case has been adjourned to Thursday, January 28.

Kufuor attends Rawlings’s funeral in wheelchair

0

It is no secret that former presidents Jerry John Rawlings and John Agyekum Kufuor had a frosty relationship.

While they both tried in the public space do downplay suggestions of some hostility between them, their public statements were more than enough to convey such thoughts to Ghanaians.

This deep-seated spite between Rawlings and Kufuor who were the first and second presidents of the fourth republic respectively was allegedly birthed by what the late former president thought to be a persecution of his appointees by the Kufuor administration and a withdrawal of his courtesies.

Check This Out: Zylofon FM shut down after mask men threatened to kill Blakk Rasta on air

Records show that the late president at any given opportunity ‘boomed’ at his successor who though silent often, on few occasions fired back.

Death, they say helps put things in perspective and remind humans of the essence of love, unity and peace.

This effect that death supposedly has on human beings appears to have caught up with former President Kufuor who despite not being in the best of conditions showed up at his funeral ceremony.

John Agyekum Kufuor showed up in a wheelchair to pay his last respect to his predecessor who will be laid to rest on Wednesday, January 27, 2021.

The media didn’t support me when I needed them – Actor Enoch Darko

0

Enoch Darko, one of Ghana’s fast-rising actors who was discovered from the Talented Kids reality show has expressed disappointment in the Ghanaian media, saying they did not support him when he needed them.

In an interview with the award-winning Foster Romanus on eTV Ghana’s Late Nite Celebrity Show, he said this per experience from his two-year stay in Nigeria where he got the chance to work directly with legendary actors.

Check This Out: Zylofon FM shut down after mask men threatened to kill Blakk Rasta on air

He disclosed that he got the opportunity to sit, eat and have conversations with huge Nigerian actors like Aki and Porpor, Patience Ozorkwor and the likes; people that we all sat behind our televisions to watch, but never got any publicity from the media about it.

“When I was in Nigeria and I started the Watabomshell thing, none of the media supported me. I say it today that all the bloggers and the whole media, none of them supported me but as soon as I came to Ghana, everyone wants to mingle with me.

There are some Nigerian actors that no matter what you do, you can never get to take a picture with them so when you saw your own young Ghanaian actor with these actors whose movies we all watched during our childhood, the least you could do was talk about it and support your boy but you all didn’t”, he shared.

According to Watabomshell, he is very disappointed, therefore, if not for the fact that he is Ghanaian and Ghana will always be his first home, he would have shunned everyone who did not support him but is trying to get close to him now that he is back in Ghana.

Akufo-Addo will have tough time fixing economy – Prof Abdulai

0

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will have a lot of difficulties solving the challenges with the local economy in his second term, Professor David Abdulai, a Senior Advisor at the African Parliamentary Network, has said.

He said on the Key Points on TV3 Saturday, January 16 that Mr Akufo-Addo commenced his second term at a time the global economy is saddled with crisis following the outbreak of the coronavirus.

Prof Abdulai said also that with the current 137-137 composition in parliament, the president will face challenges pushing his policies through the legislature to get them approved.

He told host of the programme Abena Tabi that “I think it is going to be difficult for the president in his second term especially with the hung parliament.

“You are going to have challenges especially passing some of your policies through and getting a lot of things done. That is the first thing that I see is going to happen.”

“The global environment is tight now when it comes to raising resources for development. Even developed countries are having challenges so first, you are coming into government at a time the global economy is suffering from all these challenges with the pandemic.”

Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo said in his inaugural address on January 7, 2020, that the arrival of COVID-19 drove home the lesson to all to be self-reliant.

He said “The pandemic has emphasized the fact that we cannot continue to be living on edge in a day-to-day economy. This is dangerous for our survival, and it is important that we set up buffers of protection in all aspects of our lives.”

He added “In my first term as President, I was able to count on the contribution of all citizens in attempting to create this Ghana. What I have seen these last four years is further evidence, if any were needed, that the Ghanaian will no longer accept poverty and deprivation as his or her portion, but is rather determined to work to chart a path of growth and development for himself or herself.

“Today, our economy, even in the face of the global pandemic of COVID-19, continues to show resilience and a much faster rate of recovery than originally envisaged, and was, indeed, one of the fastest-growing economies in the world in 2020. Ghana remains one of the most attractive destinations on the continent for foreign direct investment, with the presence in the country of some of the world’s largest conglomerates attesting to this fact. Establishing a strong economy, undergoing a structural transformation to value-added activities, which will generate jobs for our young people and enhance their living standards, will be the main preoccupation of my second term.

“Together, we are ensuring that the basic tenets of social justice are met. Many said it was beyond us, but we have ensured that financial considerations no longer determine the fate of the Ghanaian child. Because of the implementation of the Free Senior High School policy, once willing and able, senior high school education is the minimum education to be received by every Ghanaian child. Access to quality healthcare is no more a luxury ordinary people cannot afford, following the revival of the National Health Insurance Scheme. Our aim is to reach Universal Health Coverage as soon as possible.

“Food production has increased significantly, and a conscious effort has been made to improve the living standards of our farmers. The newly constructed warehouses dotted across the country are storing the surpluses for export to our neighbours, and the programme for Planting for Food and Jobs has become the veritable rock on which the successful future of our agriculture is being built.

“Our roads are being constructed at a much faster pace than before, and, yes, I acknowledge there are still many more kilometres to construct. We defined last year as ‘The Year of Roads’. This year will be the second ‘Year of Roads’, as we continue with our focus on dealing with the deficit in our road infrastructure. The development of our rail sector, on which considerable resources and energies are being devoted, will open up the country, and lead to the creation of a more connected society, and will, also, help realise the goal of regional and continental integration.

“The arrival of COVID-19 drove home the lesson to all of us that we have to be self-reliant. The pandemic has emphasised the fact that we cannot continue to be living on edge in a day-to-day economy. This is dangerous for our survival, and it is important that we set up buffers of protection in all aspects of our lives.

“So, when there was a shortage in the supply of personal protective equipment, at a time when they were being sold at extortionist prices on the world market, the enterprise of the Ghanaian shone through. We produced, right here in Ghana, our own sanitisers, face masks, medical scrubs, gowns, liquid soap amongst others. We can, indeed, build a Ghana Beyond Aid, if we make full use, as we must, of the enterprise and ingenuity of our people, especially our young people. The prominent role being played by young people in the digitisation journey of our nation is strong proof of the feasibility of this objective, and Ghana is set to become one of the most digitised economies in Africa in the next few years.

“In this same vein, I expect the locally produced Eku juice, one of the results of Government’s “One-District-One-Factory” flagship policy, to replace rapidly the imported fruit juices on the shelves of our supermarkets, not because anyone will so decree, but because the quality of the locally produced one is as good, if not superior.”

NPP not majority, they belong to ‘majority group’ – Bagbin clarifies

0

I haven’t stated that the NPP has a majority in Parliament, I haven’t said that,” these are the words of the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin.

He was responding to a request for clarity on his earlier declaration that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and an Independent Candidate constituted ‘the majority group’ in the House.

The request came from the leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu. The Speaker, in responding to the Tamale South MP, stressed that he had spoken of a majority group – consisting of the NPP caucus and its ally in the person of the Fomena MP, Andrew Amoako Asiamah.

Before his clarification, the speaker stressed: “Honourable members, coming from the high office of the personality of the leader of the NDC wing in Parliament, sometimes referred to as caucus, I will try to clarify what I said.

“The word group means more than one and before I used that phrase, I did state that no party had an advantage over the other in terms of the numbers.

“But since the independent member, decided to do business, decided to associate in the conduct of business on the floor of this house with the NPP wing or caucus in Parliament, the two put together now constitute majority parliamentary group.”

He continued that with legal challenges surrounding a number of seats, it was only a matter of time before a clear majority or minority in the house would be established. He tasked members to unite to champion the national agenda because Ghanaians were not interested in partisanship.

“…clearly when you go through the symbols, particularly the maze, and the traditional meanings of the symbols there, you will understand that the good people of Ghana are not interested in this kind of partisanship,” he added.

This ensued today, January 15, 2021, during the first sitting.
