Bawumia’s 2024 candidature can break 8-year cycle – Lecturer

0

Communications expert and lecturer at the Ghana Institute of Journalism, Dr Etse Sikanku, has postulated that fielding Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the 2024 elections as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer gives it a realistic chance to break the eight terms cycle.

“Although in the course of the first four years under the Nana Akufo-Addo-led administration he (Dr Bawumia) lost a bit of lustre unlike the period when he was speaking at public lectures, if his team handles him very well, he will give the National Democratic Congress (NDC) a good run.

“He may also have huge challenges with cross-over appeal, especially with some who maintain any myth or any last remaining amount of goodwill or political capital from his lecture series days has been completely dissipated and he does have to fight off many tags that have taken root.

“There will also be the incumbency fatigue playing out and if the NDC puts out a glittering and hard to gloss over candidate then the NPP will be going in as the under-dogs however, with Dr Bawumia, there will be a realistic chance and it will be nothing but game on hand,” Dr Sikanku cautioned. –Ghanapoliticsonline.com

Electoral Commission Chairperson exhibited bad faith – Dr Ayine

Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, a Spokesperson for the Petitioner, former President John Dramani Mahama, on Tuesday alleged that Mrs Jean Mensa, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission acted in bad faith against the Petitioner.

Earlier, Dr Michael Kpessa-Whyte, the second witness of the Petitioner has told the Supreme Court that Mrs Jean Mensa, the EC Chairperson instructed him though not directly, and his colleague Robert Joseph Mettle-Nunoo, who were in the EC Strong room to convey a message to the Petitioner.

He claims the message was on some of the observation they had made on some irregularities that were significant in terms of credibility and integrity of the results.

Dr Ayine was addressing the media in a post-trial session, said when Dr Kpessa-Whyte and Mr Mettle-Nunoo left the EC’s strong room to convey the alleged message to the petitioner, the Commission then went ahead to declare the results behind them.

He said the Petitioner had an extremely wonderful day in court today, and that the narrative they brought to court that there was a predetermined agenda on the part of the EC to declare President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as President-Elect by-all means played out in court.

He alleged that the evidence of Dr Kpessa-Whyte made it clear that the Chairperson of the EC on that day, acted in bad faith.

He said his colleagues left in good faith in the expectation that after the consultation, they were going to come back and then continue with the process as stipulated by law, however, that did not happen.

He said it also came out that the venue for declaration of the election results was changed without consultation since invitation “letters” was sent to all the parties who were all aware that the declaration of the 2020 Presidential Election was going to take place at the Accra International Conference Centre but immediately they left, she went to declare the results in favour of President Akufo-Addo.

Mr Kpessa-Whyte during cross-examination had told the court that he did not hear the EC’s chairperson instructing them to convey a message to the petitioner by was told so by Mr Mettle-Nunoo his colleague at the strong room. So they also left together.

He alleged that the petitioner’s witness was harassed because his evidence was clearly against the narrative of the EC and President Akufo-Addo’s lawyers.
The Spokesperson said looking at the body language of the Vice Presidential Candidate of the Party, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman and Mr Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, Party Chairman, they had a wonderful day in Court.

Former President, John Mahama has filed a petition at the Supreme Court seeking an annulment of the Presidential election results and a re-run of the election between him and Nana Akufo-Addo who is the second respondent in the petition.

The petition is also seeking an injunction directing the 1st Respondent, the Electoral Commission to proceed to conduct a second election between the petitioner and the 2nd respondent as candidates, as required under Articles 63 (4) and (5) of the 1992 constitution.

I suspect Konadu was the reason behind Rawlings’ ‘u-turn’ with Akufo-Addo – Fifi Kwettey

Former Advisor to the late Former President, Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings, Fifi Kwettey has suggested what possibly warranted a change in relations between his former boss and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Many have over time, wondered what caused the very close relationship between J.J Rawlings and President Akufo-Addo, especially considering their previously frosty relationship in the past.

Check This Out: Teachers’ Laptop: Gov’t takes 70% cost of Laptops for Pre-tertiary Teachers

Mr. Kwettey, whilst memorializing Mr. Rawlings revealed to GhanaWeb that, the latter who previously had absolutely no regard for Mr. Akufo-Addo may have changed his stance because of his wife.

According to Mr. Kwettey, Mrs. Konadu Agyeman Rawlings who had failed to secure a leadership slot in the NDC, became rather close to the party’s opponent, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, after breaking off to form her own party; the NDP.

He cited the popular saying, “the enemy of your enemy is your friend’ as a probable reason for the closeness between Mrs Agyeman Rawlings and Mr Akufo-Addo.

Because of his undisputed love for his wife, Mr. Kwettey suggested, Mr. Rawlings probably became friends with Mr. Akufo-Addo also, eventually, leading to a subsequent buildup of the relationship.

“As to what may be made him become a little more patient towards President Akufo-Addo, I’ve never unfortunately had the privilege of asking him but it’s one thing I always wanted to ask him because I knew exactly the nature of what he felt towards Nana Akufo-Addo.

“He absolutely had no regard for Akufo-Addo at all, I’m talking about back in time, when we were in opposition and we were working to come back to office, he never did,” he told GhanaWeb.

Adding,

“The nature of why it changed I cannot tell but I kind of suspect Mrs. Rawlings, because Mrs. Rawlings became an antagonist to the NDC when she couldn’t become the leader. She broke off to form her own party and her party became more against the NDC rather than a party that wanted power.

“In the nature of politics itself, the enemy of your enemy becomes your friend so…she became closer to Nana Akufo-Addo, so enemy of enemy become friends so I suspect that must be it, because of the wife.”

Mr. Kwettey was speaking during GhanaWeb’s memorial series, in honour of the departed former President.

NLC tells Universities’ Senior Staff to end strike

The National Labour Commission (NLC) has asked the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana to call off their strike.
This was after they held a meeting on meeting on Wednesday, January 27, 2021.
Although NLC says that the Association has valid concerns, it maintains that the university staff association failed to exhaust all laid down procedures before declaring the strike.
The National Labour Commission wants the Association to forward their proposal to the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission for further negotiation and entreated them to call off their strike.
Chairman of the University of Ghana chapter of the Association, Francis Sosu, in an interview with UniversNews gave moe details from the meeting with the NLC.

“NLC drew our attachment to the fact that we have a case alright but we cannot be online and be on strike and still be negotiating. So we should go back to the Fair Wages and Salaries and give them our proposals for negotiations. They also directed the government to settle the arrears within three months and so they are advising us to call off the strike. They stated that there’s no need to be on strike since the association will be meeting with the fair wages and salaries for negotiations,” he narrated.
As to whether they will return to work, Francis Sosu says that such a decision will be taken after a consultative meeting with national executives.
“We told the Commission that the national executives will need to meet before a decision could be taken concerning the strike,” he said.

NPP MPs have become insensitive to students plight – Mahama Ayariga

Bawku Central Member of Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has labelled his colleagues from the New Patriotic Party as insensitive following the rejection of his motion for the fees of tertiary students to be absorbed for the 2020/2021 academic year.

Mr. Ayariga wanted President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to absorb tertiary fees as part of interventions from the government to mitigate the effects of the pandemic on Ghanaians.

Although the Minority in parliament sided with the motion, the Majority MPs made a case that the government had already provided enough support in the area of education in the wake of the pandemic.

After a heated debate in parliament, legislators, in a majority decision, rejected the motion.

Speaking on Campus Exclusive, Mr Ayariga said he was disappointed at the turn of events and accused New Patriotic Party parliamentarians of not being cooperative in offering support to parents.

Check This Out:  Koku Anyidoho sues NDC’s Dzifa Gunu for defamation, demands GH¢10m

“I’m very disappointed… the very amendment that they inserted is the reason why they are against the motion. So clearly it wasn’t about the language. It wasn’t because they didn’t understand what the motion was. It is because the NPP members of Parliament took a position that students shouldn’t be supported,” he said

Mr. Ayariga questioned the Majority’s decision to consult Vice-Chancellors on the matter rather than students who will be the immediate beneficiaries.4

According to him, the move by the Minister of Education designate, Yaw Adutwum, is a clear indication that they had become insensitive.

“The person nominated to become the next Minister of Education said he had called Vice-Chancellors and that there was no problem. Are Vice-Chancellors paying school fees? I thought he will say ‘I have interviewed students and students say there is no problem, we can pay all our fees’ then he’d be making sense. But you don’t come to the floor Parliament and say you have called Vice-Chancellors and that the issue of fees is not a priority of Vice-Chancellors. You can see that the NPP MPs have become insensitive,” he added.

Mahama Ayariga also described arguments suggesting that his motion came in late considering that some students had already paid their fees as ‘preposterous’
