Another Akyem group blasts Concern Citizens of Okyeman to the defence Mahama

10

There seems to be a turf war stoking as a group calling itself the Progressive Akyem Citizens (PAC) fires back at another group with the name Concern Citizens of Okyeman, following the latter’s demonstration against the NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama.

The Concern Citizens of Okyeman on Wednesday embarked on a demonstration, protesting against the usage of the “Akyem Sakawa Boys” on some elements in the ruling Government.

They became the first group to be granted the chance to demonstrate despite Government’s ban public activities over the covid-19 scare.

The group, made up of the chiefs and residents of Akyem Abuakwa, Kotoku, and Bosome, all in the Eastern Region are demanding an apology from John Mahama, who shared an article originally from the MP for Bolgatanga Central.

But their action has quickly being countered by the PAC, describing it “misguided emotionalism”.

In a statement to discredit the existence of any group called Concern Citizens of Okyeman, PAC says the demonstration on Wednesday was reckless.

“We see their action as reckless and dangerous to our beautiful democracy built over the years as a country,” the statement read.

PROGRESSIVE AKYEM CITIZENS(PAC)

For Immediate Release

OKYEMAN YOUTH MUST STOP THE UNNECESSARY PARTISAN ATTACKS ON JOHN MAHAMA

We the members of the Progressive Akyem Citizen wish to express our disappointment and shock at the misguided emotionalism and unhealthy political infiltration by a group by name Concern Citizens of Okyeman.

We see their action as reckless and dangerous to our beautiful democracy built over the years as a country.

For the purposes of emphasis, let us state unequivocally:

  1. That, this so called Concern Citizens of Okyeman hurriedly put together for partisan purpose does not represent the entire Akyem land. They are a few politically motivated young men who have come together to do the political bidding of their paymasters.

  2. As people interested in the development of Akyem, we condemn these acts of political infiltration aimed at maligning other politicians especially John Mahama of the NDC in the name of Okyeman.

3.That, we as a group wish to state in no uncertain terms that the use of the word ‘Akyem Mafia’ and other tribal related comments to refer to Ghanaian politicians in our body politics was not started yesterday and John Mahama of the NDC is not the originator. The first time we heard of Akyem mafia was when Dr. Kobina Arthur Kennedy, a former campaign manager of then candidate Akufo-Addo, published in his book entitled ‘Chasing the elephant into the bush: the politics of complacency’. In the said book, Dr. Kennedy sought to describe the behavior of certain political figures in the NPP who had surrounded Nana Akufo Addo who, according to him, caused his 2008 presidential defeat through their mafia works. This gave birth to the AKYEM/KYEBI MAFIA tag on some few NPP power brokers. Where was these group? What has changed today? Is it that they endorsed the Mafia tag because Dr. Arthur Kennedy was a member of the NPP or it espoused the political might of those few Akyem political power brokers? Isn’t this ridiculous?

  1. We also want to state clearly that the post on facebook which was only republished by Mr. John Mahama has the member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central as the originator.

  2. Why have our brothers decided to crucify Mr. John Mahama who only shared a comment by somebody? Is this a case of let’s hang the dog and give it a bad name?

  1. For the records, Hon. Adongo in that Facebook post used the Akyem sakawa boys to refer to a few people in government who have been engaging in fraudulent acts and were pushing for another, named Agyapa Royalties deal. He, at no point referred to we, the people of Akyem, as Sakawa People.

  2. It will therefore be an overstretch, born out of partisan political mischief, for anybody to extend and generalise such specific description of a few of our compatriots in government, to all Akyems.

  3. Such a reckless Generalisation, triggered by His Excellency Nana Akufo-Addo, and inciting this NPP group, only seeks to further divide us as Akyems and create unneccessary tension in our Republic.

  4. Rather than showing such blind Solidarity to a few of our Powerful kingsmen in Government, we will advise our compatriots to channel their energies in advising them to behave in a manner that brings honour to we, the citizens of Akyems.

  5. Again, We demand no apologies from Mr. John Mahama since he has committed no wrong.

  6. We wish to tell our Akyem brothers that there are other pressing issues confronting the various communities in Akyem area and we expect our brothers to channel our energies towards demanding solutions to our enormous challenges.

  1. We expect all of us to judge all political parties by the content of their manifestoes rather than clutching on tribal sentiments that may destroy our peaceful coexistence as a people.

  2. Consequently, we will demonstrate in the coming days to show our protest against a few of our compatriots in government!!

We thank everybody and wish that our friends will cut this pettiness and fight for the welfare of our Akyem land.

Chiefs, people of Akyem states go on demo over ‘Akyem sakawa mafia’ comment

Chief and residents of Akyem Abuakwa, Kotoku and Bosome, all in the Eastern Region, have served notice of a mammoth demonstration against the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama.

The demonstration is scheduled for Wednesday, September 9, 2020.

Protesters have been asked in a notice sighted by GhanaWeb to gather at Asamankese Lorry Park.

John Mahama recently shared a comment by MP for Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Adongo, in which he sought to say that an “Akyem Sakawa Mafia” in government initiated the controversial Agyapa Royalties deal to rob the state.

“Agyapa Royalties fraud is the last straw: The Akyem sakawa boys and grandpas must go,” was the headline of the original post that was also shared by Mr Mahama.

Since Mr Mahama shared the post, it has been condemned as ethnocentric against the people of Akyem Abuakwa.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his vice, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, have condemned the comment as tribal bigotry.

The announcement about the demonstration gave the following explanation:

“Protest against bigotry comments made against the chiefs and people of Akyem Abuakwa, Bosome and Kotoku by the flagbearer and leader of the National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama.”

Meanwhile, the NDC has said it will not apologise on behalf of John Mahama for the comment.

The Deputy General-Secretary of the NDC, Peter Boamah Otokunor, has said members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) have taken the words out of context.

NDC’s manifesto meant to win votes; all promises can’t be fulfilled even in 10 years – Manasseh

Investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni, has stated that even though the 2020 manifesto of opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is well-crafted, it cannot be fully implemented even if the NDC stays in power for ten years, pointing out that it is especially overly ambitious following the disruptions caused by COVID-19.

He contends that the manifesto seeks to achieve too much, and is meant to win votes but cannot be implemented fully due to the wastage in the public sector.

Ghanaian investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni, has stated that even though the 2020 manifesto of opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is well-crafted, it cannot be fully implemented even if the NDC stays in power for ten years, pointing out that it is especially overly ambitious following the disruptions caused by COVID-19.

He contends that the manifesto seeks to achieve too much, and is meant to win votes but cannot be implemented fully due to the wastage in the public sector.

“….My other concern is that the NDC manifesto is too ambitious for an ailing post-COVID-19 economy like ours, especially when the current administration is said to have borrowed more than all governments since independence. It will be impossible to execute 50% of this manifesto considering the leakage and wastage in the public sector. The manifesto is meant to win votes and one cannot reasonably expect all the promises to be delivered even in 10 years,” he reacted on social Media after the launch of the manifesto on Monday.

He added that whereas it is easy to promise, it is difficult to deliver: “If the iron-plaited mouth and throat grant passage to a sharp knife, we should be worried about how the delicate anus is going to expel it. It’s easy to promise, but the delivery is another thing.”

The NDC has made some pretty lofty promises which, some experts argue cannot be achieved when they are given the mandate. But the NDC has explained that it has everything mapped out to deliver its manifesto.

Our media discuss more politics than development – Awuah-Darko

Kwame Awuah-Darko says a research conducted in 36 African countries revealed that 45-55 per cent of media discourse in Africa is on politics and not development, as compared to China.

He added that 25-35 per cent of media discourse focused on Religion with 15-7 per cent focusing on sport and 6 per cent of media discussions focusing on development.

The Businessman and Politician who was speaking on Citi TV’s Point of View said the findings of his research has informed the basis of his new book which is yet to be published.

Awuah-Darko said that he compared his findings to China’s development cycle and he realized that the media in China focused discussions on development.

He said: “So, you go through a normal news broadcast and the conversation would be a factory that has produced one million tractors, and it had improved by 36 per cent efficiency […] and they will show all the engineers that have worked on the project.”

He added: “So, you could see that the average Chinese person, who’s done their development in my lifetime, thinks on how to make things and thinks of how to achieve things.’

Kwame Awuah-Darko noted that what the media focuses on in a particular country, then makes the country what it becomes.

He stated: “A lot of people in Africa are interested in Politics today… or becoming a pastor or a priest or a sportsperson. That is what we have become as a nation because they are oriented towards what they hear.’

Kwame Awuah-Darko explained that the lesson learnt is that the African continent has not started focusing on its developmental issues.

Koku Anyidoho showers praises on ‘King Cyrus’ Akufo-Addo

0

Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress, Koku Anyidoho has once again likened Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to the biblical King Cyrus.

Mr Anyidoho is showering praises on Akufo-Addo for honouring his promise of renovating the Asomdwee Park where late Professor John Evans Atta Mills was buried.

At the 8th anniversary remembrance of the late president, the government through the Coastal Development Authority promised to give the facility a facelift.

In an Okay FM interview, Anyidoho revealed that the clearance has been given for work to commence on the site.

An emotional Anyidoho expressed gratitude to Akufo-Addo for staying through to his words.

He indicated his readiness to visit the president at the seat of government and thank him officially for honouring the image of Atta Mills.

“As I speak to you, works are ongoing at the Asomdwee Park thanks to President Akufo-Addo. The design for Asomdwee Park was made in 2012 but as to why we couldn’t finish it, I don’t know but Nana Akufo-Addo has made it possible. A letter has been issued for the contractor to reconstruct Asomdwee Park to its original design,” he said.

Anyidoho further said the reconstruction of Asomdwee Park is an answer to his fervent prayers.

“Just as we went to former president Rawlings to show appreciation, in due time, I would lead my team to flagstaff to thank Akufo-Addo. I have fasted and prayed and the Lord has answered my prayers. I would thank Akufo-Addo for allowing Asomdwee Park to be constructed so that God’s name will be glorified,” he noted.

The CEO of Atta Mills Memorial Institute mentioned Akufo-Addo as a person sent by God to bridge the difference between the two parties and unite the country as a whole.

“The deep partisan thing is not helping anybody. Ghana has been working on one leg since independence because of that partisan thing. President Akufo-Addo, if you are the Cyrus that has given the go-ahead for the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem, I like Daniel, Shedrack, Meshack and Abednego are grateful”, he told Okay FM.

You’re driving away swing voters – Ben Ephson to Mahama, Akufo-Addo

0

Renowned pollster, Ben Ephson has cautioned former President John Dramani Mahama who is seeking re-election on the ticket of the  National Democratic Congress  and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on the risks posed to their respective parties in engaging in public rebuttals.

His comments follow a recent string of unsavoury political statements on ethnic lines made by John Mahama and a subsequent reply from president Akufo-Addo.

John Mahama in an attempt to run down the controversial Agyapa deal endorsed an article written by Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Adongo which had the title “Agyapa Royalties Fraud Is The Last Straw: The Akyem Sakawa Boys and Grandpas Must Go.”

The article in question was described by many Ghanaians as ethnocentric and had the potential of whipping up ethnic sentiments in the build-up to the December 7 general elections.

Though this did not sit well with President Akufo-Addo, he also in a similar fashion retorted by saying amongst other things that “The comment made by my opponent: ‘Akyem Sakawa’ people, I have not heard any public figure in this country or anybody comment on it…If I was to get up to make a comment about northerners or Gonjas, you can imagine the uproar that will be in the country.”

While this has become another opportunity for politicians to feed on, Ben Ephson has said these insults and ethnocentric play, at best, will scare away floating voters who are yet to decide on who to cast their vote for.

Unlike party faithful who may be unfazed by the recent happenings, he posited that these insults will generally repel votes for the two parties.

“Insult repel votes…the president has also replied him. If the president hadn’t replied to him, he could have used it against him. The two of them insulting each other might only lead to some floating or swing voters deciding to stay at home…” Ben Ephson told GhanaWeb in an interaction.

With regards to security and the tension building up in the country with barely three months to the elections, he insisted that it was not a new phenomenon and will not in any way plunge the fortunes of the upcoming polls in danger.

“…I don’t think these insults will bring the elections into any danger because we’ve gone through more intense elections than this one. The only thing is that your opponents can use the insults against you…”

Reemphasizing the importance of swing voters and the need to for the two leaders to secure their votes instead, he further argued that “Swing voters are the king makers, as for your supporters whatever you’ll say they’ll vote for you…So, the insults are likely to drive away swing voters. The insults have the potential to make swing voters sit at home, the emphasis is on swing voters.”

NDC’s 2020 manifesto will solve underdevelopment problem for good – Asiedu Nketia

1

The National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) manifesto will finally open doors to Ghana’s development, the party’s General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has said.

He said the essence of the manifesto was inspired by the average Ghanaian and not party leaders.

“We are presenting to you a manifesto that was not developed by leaders of a party who have arrogated themselves the power of thinking for other people. We are presenting to you the product of the people’s own thinking,” Mr. Asiedu Nketia said during the NDC’s manifesto launch on Monday evening.

He described this approach as thinking outside the box adding that the thoughts of the people were compiled, “polished and developed into implementable programmes.”

Because this manifesto is inspired by the people and so named the “People’s Manifesto”, Mr. Asiedu Nketia said he was “very confident that the age-long problem of underdevelopment for this country is going to be solved once and for all by the people’s manifesto.”

He further assured that the realisation of this manifesto will be the vision of the people.

“We asked the people how they would want to see Ghana in the next four years; what country they envision to live in the next four years and how to build that country and it is out of that conversation that the People’s Manifesto was developed.”

The manifesto, which was put together by 21 persons within the NDC is divided into six key areas: fixing the economy, promoting human development, providing infrastructure for growth, providing decent jobs, good governance and corruption and deepening international relations and foreign affairs

2020 NDC Manifesto: What the NDC intends todo in the Insurance Sector

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has pledged to adopt a Risk-Based Minimum Capital approach for the insurance sector should they be given the nod in the upcoming December polls.

According to the party’s 2020 manifesto, the minimum capital will be linked to the risks an insurance company carries instead of the current fixed minimum capital regime.

Ghana’s insurance sector which currently has a penetration rate of 2 percent coupled with the coronavirus pandemic could adversely affect the insurance sector in general.

The National Insurance Commission (NIC) on its part in 2019 increased the minimum capital for insurance companies from GHc15 million to GHc50 million.

The Commission further did the same for Reinsurance companies from GHc40 million to GHc125 million.

While the minimum capital requirement for Insurance Broking companies was also increased from GHc300,000 to GHc500,000, the minimum capital requirement for reinsurance broking companies was however maintained at GH¢1 million.

Insurance firms in the country are all required to meet a June 2021 deadline or face collapse.

Pensions

For Pensioners, the opposition NDC has also pledged to pay an annual 13th-month bonus in consonance with the amendment of the National Pensions Act 2008 ACT 76 if elected.

According to the party, the amendment will also afford workers in the SSNIT pension scheme who have contributed for a minimum period of 10 to 15 years an opportunity to use their contribution as collateral loans for housing.

“We will amend the National Pensions Act 2008 ACT 766 to improve both service delivery and financial efficiency in the SSNIT pension scheme.

“It will allow contributing workers such as private teachers amongst others who lose their jobs suddenly due to natural occurrences such as COVID-19 pandemic to be paid stipends while they search for a new job.

NDC Manifesto: NDC to expand Legal Education – John Mahama

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has said when given the opportunity to run the affairs of the country again, in the December 2020 polls, it will grant accreditation to certified law faculties in the country to run the professional law course.

This, according to the NDC, will ensure access to professional legal education for all across the country.

The NDC disclosed this during the launch of its 2020 manifesto in Accra on Monday, 7 September 2020.

Check This  Out:  NDC Manifesto is a ‘People Thinking Manifesto’ – Asiedu Nketia

The NDC noted it will “vigorously reform and expand access to professional legal education and provide opportunities to all qualified LLB holders by granting accreditation to certified law faculties to undertake the professional law qualification course.”

Also, the main opposition party and its flag bearer, John Dramani Mahama promised to“review the Legal Profession Act in consultation with stakeholders, and establish a council for legal education and training, to accredit certified law faculties to run the Professional Law Course subject to the oversight supervision of the council.

It further added that it will “establish a faculty of law in the Northern Region to serve the northern sector.”

Check This Out: NDC announces Sectoral Spokespersons for its Election 2020 ‘People Manifesto’

Currently, there is no faculty of law in the Northern Region.

Access to the professional law course has also been a concern to most LLB graduates across the country with 1000s of students failing to qualify to the Ghana School of Law (GSL).

Out of the 1,820 candidates who sat for the Ghana School of Law Entrance Exams 2019, only 128 of them passed, according to the results posted on the notice board of the school.

The examination was in two parts: two written questions and objectives.

There was a similar magnitude of failure in 2018.

Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo earlier in 2019 stated that the mass production of lawyers will not happen under her watch.

She stated: “Those of you lawyers and those of you lecturers who are busy advocating free scale, mass admissions into the professional law course, and mass production of lawyers, be careful what you wish for.”

“So long as I have anything to do with it, it won’t happen. Just like you can’t mass-produce doctors and surgeons, Ghanaians must not have mass-produced lawyers imposed on them,” the Chief Justice said when she addressed the Bench, Bar and Faculty Conference at the Labadi Beach Hotel on the theme: ‘The Changing Landscape in the Law – the Judge, the Lawyer and the Academic’.

She added: “Those of us who have been too long on the General Legal Council, those of us who spent too long on the Disciplinary Committee, we have cause to worry because the kinds of misconduct are such that there is no way anybody envisaged these categories of misconduct when the Legal Profession Act was being enacted in the 1960s.”
