Coming back to normal life should be done in safety – GNAT

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) said it believed that coming back to normal life should be done in safety.

Mr Thomas T. Musah, GNAT General Secretary, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency said, two weeks ago, they presented a proposal to the Ghana Education Service (GES) detailing what government should do before the limited reopening for final year students.

“In that proposal, we made it clear that all schools should be fumigated, provide with Veronica buckets, thermometer guns, health personnel to man the schools and expand infrastructure to enhance social distancing and management of students, among others,” he said.

He said they also spoke about teacher incentives to motivate them to give out their best during these difficult times.

The Secretary-General said he hoped that government would make those logistics ready before June 22 to give assurance to parents, teachers and students of their safety.

Mr Musah said: “We are not in normal times and safety at this time is very key. This is not the time to be considering issues as the usual business”.

He said the onus is on the GES to come out with a policy statement and resources for effective implementation of the proposals put before it to ensure the safety of all.

He said GNAT continue to maintain that no one should be left out, adding, “we need to give the assurance to parents that their wards will be a safe while back in school”.

“The Ministry of Education, GES and all duty bearers have to ensure that the right things are done in our schools to protect both students and teachers from contracting the COVID-19 virus”.

He said it was likely that they would be meeting with the Ministry and the GES this week to see how far to carry out the measures.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo in his 10th address to the nation on managing of COVID-19 on May 31, announced the reopening of schools in phases.

He outlined that from Monday, June 22, final year SHS and SHS Gold Track students are to resume classes with a minimum of 25 in a classroom

The Final year JHS students also will resume classes on June 29 with a minimum of 30 students in a classroom.

Meanwhile, final year university students are to resume classes on June 15 with half the size of every class during lectures at all times.

Fact-Check: Mahama quotes false coronavirus figures for Ghana

Former President John Dramani Mahama in a blog post titled “John Mahama’s latest write-up on COVID-19” on his website on Friday, May 29, 2020 stated some figures to give an overview of the status of COVID-19 in Ghana.

He mentioned the total number of positive cases recorded in Ghana as 7,362 with the number of deaths as 32. The write up also mentioned the number of recoveries as 2,412 “as of this morning.”

“As of this morning, 29th May, 2020, the number of confirmed positive cases stands at 7,362, with 32 deaths. While the 2,412 total recoveries is welcome news, it is also evident from the latest data that the virus is still spreading, and across the country,” the fifth paragraph of the publication stated.

The publication was shared on various news and political WhatsApp groups. It has been published on major online on sites such as Myjoyonline.

Fact-checkghana.com looked at the claim and found some of the figures to be wrongly quoted.

Explanation:

Ghana recorded its first case of COVID-19 on 12th March 2020. Since then, the country’s case count continues to increase with the Ghana Health Service bearing the primary responsibility for announcing case count updates in Ghana.

Through a Google link time-check mechanism, we found out that John Mahama’s blog post which states some figures as the numbers for COVID-19 positive cases, recoveries and deaths in Ghana was published at exactly 11:45GMT on Friday, May 29, 2020.

The Ghana Health Service’s COVID-19 portal, which is the nationally dedicated online destination for announcing new COVID-19 figures in Ghana at the time of John Mahama’s publication, had the following numbers for COVID-19 cases, recoveries and deaths in Ghana.

Number of cases: 7,303

Number of deaths: 34

Number of recoveries: 2,412

The GHS figures for the number of deaths and confirmed cases are different from those mentioned in John Mahama’s blog post.

We observed that a few minutes after John Mahama’s blog post, the Ghana Health Service released a new update on the country’s COVID-19 case count.

78475993

To be sure that the figures quoted by John Mahama were not the same as those the Ghana Health Service minutes later announced, we checked by the Ghana Health Service website and found the following numbers as the new figures:

Number of cases: 7,616

Number of deaths: 34

Number of recoveries: 2,421

91247260

Based on the above information, we conclude that the figures quoted in John Mahama’s blog post are wrong and a false representation of the case count of COVID-19 cases in Ghana.

The figure (7, 362) wrongly quoted by John Mahama as the total number of confirmed cases was first wrongly reported by the Ghana Health Service as on Tuesday, May 26, 2020. It was corrected 15 minutes later as 7,303. The Ghana Health Service later apologized for the error.

Fact-Check: Has President Akufo-Addo signed a Bill Gates coronavirus vaccine pact?

0

Social media commentary captured in a news publication here claims that Ghana’s president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has committed Ghana to a vaccine pact to receive COVID-19 vaccines sponsored by billionaire Bill Gates for use by Ghanaians.

The publication, which features social media comments, also claims that Nana Akufo-Addo has committed Ghana to a mandatory vaccination programme.

Some of the comments include those shared here and here.

Fact-checkGhana.com looked into these claims and found it to be completely false.

Explanation: There is yet to be a vaccine against COVID-19 in the world although the World Health Organization (WHO) has identified a number of possible vaccines.

Ghana, like other countries of the world affected by COVID-19, is supporting various initiatives geared towards finding a safe and effective vaccine.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which is a major funder of the World Health Organization (WHO) has been a victim of misinformation and conspiracy theories such as the foundation planning to use a future COVID-19 vaccine to implant microchips in billions of people and to depopulate Africa.

These conspiracies have, among other things, been fuelled by Microsoft founder Bill Gates’ push for a COVID-19 vaccine.

The claim that President Akufo-Addo has committed Ghana to a Bill Gates vaccine pact to receive a COVID-19 vaccine for compulsory vaccination of citizens is based on a tweet by the president, via his twitter handle, @NAkufoAddo on May 15, 2020.

“Together with other global leaders, I signed the @UNAIDS Public Letter on a People’s Vaccine for # COVID19. It is important that all people everywhere must have access to the vaccine when one becomes available. It must be the #PeoplesVaccine,” the tweet read.

To verify the claim, we visited the UNAIDS official website to get details about the said letter [described as a pact by the claimants] and find out if it was in any way connected to Bill Gates and was associated with a compulsory vaccination programme.

A blog post on the UNAIDS website indicated that the people’s vaccine against COVID-19 is only an open letter signed by over 140 world leaders including current and former president and experts. The pact demands all governments of the world to ensure that whenever any effective vaccine or treatment for COVID-19 is developed, it should be patent-free, mass-produced, distributed fairly and made available to all people, in all countries, free of charge.

The Executive Director for UNAIDS, Winnie Byanyima, explained in a video that “epidemics affect everyone but they do not affect everyone equally. To fight COVID we have to fight inequality because pandemics feed on and widen inequalities…Together, we want all leaders to guarantee that when a safe and effective vaccine is developed, it is produced rapidly at scale and made available for all people in all countries free of charge. The same applies for all treatments, tests and other technologies. No one should be sent to the back of the COVID queue because of the colour of their skin or the money in their pockets.”

She further justified the calls for a people’s vaccine, citing the instance of African countries unable to buy COVID-19 test kits and PPEs from the open markets because rich countries buy them in huge quantities and stocking up for themselves.

There are currently over 100 candidate vaccines under various stages of development. According to the WHO, 10 are currently in clinical evaluation stage while 115 are in the preclinical evaluation stage.

Bill Gates in an April 2, 2020 interview on Trevor Noah’s The Daily Show said the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation would later fund factories of seven COVID-19 vaccine candidates, however, the People’s Vaccine letter does not make specific reference to any vaccine and therefore it cannot be said that Ghana has signed up for a Bill Gates COVID-19 vaccine.

Again, to the extent that the People’s Vaccine letter does not put citizens of any of the countries whose presidents have signed, like Ghana, under any agreement to be mandatorily quarantined, the claim suggesting so is false.

There is currently no law in Ghana that permits compulsory vaccination of citizens against COVID-19.

Your names will be written in the dishonorable pages of Ghana’s history – Manasseh to Jean Mensa, Bossman Asare, others

Renowned investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has described plans by the Electoral Commission of Ghana(EC) to compile a new voters’ register as a waste of resources and a threat to the county’s peace, stressing that managers of the commission who are determined to carry out this exercise, apparently to favour someone, will be remembered in the dishonourable pages of Ghana’s history.

The EC led by Jean Mensa, appointed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo are going ahead to compile a new voter roll despite widespread opposition to the effect that the exercise amounts to a waste of resources and time.

Not even the new threat of spreading the novel coronavirus has deterred the EC who, insists, the compilation of the new voter roll will begin in the latter part of next month.

The governing New Patriotic Party(NPP) seems to be the staunchest supporter of this move by EC, regularly explaining why there is the need to compile a new register.

In the view of Manasseh Azure Awuni, some pages of dishonour are reserved for those pushing this agenda:

“Mrs. Jean Mensa, Dr. Bossman Asare, the other EC Commissioners and all right thinking members of our society know that it’s not healthy to compile a new voters’ register with a few months to an election, when the temperature of the nation shoots beyond the roofs. The violence that characterised previous registrations and limited registrations should caution us. It doesn’t have to take Major Boakye Gyan’s words.

The economic devastation caused by Covid-19, and fact that the virus is still spreading should have restrained the EC and made them listen to the likes of Akoto Ampaw, who suggested to the Commission to use the existing register. Almost all civil society groups in Ghana unanimously kicked against the compilation of a new register. But it appears the EC is allergic to common sense and conventional wisdom. Or, rather, it is so blinded by the desire to do someone’s bidding that it’s unprepared to listen to anyone who doesn’t sing from the same hymn book.

I pray and hope they pull through this without compromising the security of our nation even though over a hundred million dollars is being flushed down the toilet at a time we went to beg from IMF to fight the pandemic.

But the architects of this should remember that they will find their names in the appropriate pages of our nation’s unwritten history — the inglorious pages,” he wrote on his Facebook page sighted by MyNewsGh.com.

Meanwhile the opposition National Democratic Congress(NDC) has sued the EC challenging their plan to compile a new register.

Dr. Ibn Chambas Warns EC to Consult Widely Before Taking Decision on Voters Register

Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel, and Head of UNOWAS, Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas, says the UN has been having frequent consultations with Ghana’s Electoral Commission, EC to share ideas in the discharge of its duties.

He said there is a network of Electoral Commissions in West Africa, that meet and share ideas on best practices from their countries.

Speaking at a virtual roundtable with Business Executives and policy makers in Accra, Dr. Inb Chambas said the EC in Ghana, has the responsibility to ensure that all eligible voter’s are captured in the Voters Register.

However, in carrying out its mandate, the EC should ensure that all stakeholders are consulted.

The electoral commission of Ghana has turned deaf ears to people advising them to be mindful of their activities since Civil War in many African countries came as a result of the bias nature of the EC.

“2 NPP MPs who tested COVID-19 Positive identified?”

Social Media has been awashed with visual display and speculations about the status of two members of Parliament who are suspected to have tested positive for COVID-19. This come at back of news in the media reporting unease calm among both the Majority and Minority in Parliament over whether some members have tested positive for COVID-19.

The Minority Chief Whip, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka has revealed that some parliamentarians and 13 staff have tested positive for COVID-19.

Reacting to the media briefing by the Majority Leader and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, Hon Muntaka said, the infected persons were informed of their status after the Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon. Aaron Mike Oquaye directed mass testing of all members and staff of the house last week.

He said, one cannot stop to reason why Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu and the Director of Public Affairs, Kate Addo could come out with a lie that, no one tested positive for COVID-19 when they perfectly know the statement they were carrying perverts the truth.

Hon. Muntaka also made it known that the infected MPs have been isolated while contact tracing is underway.

It is however being circulated on social media the Member of Parliament for Afutu and Akropong have tested positive for COVID-19.

Meanwhile, the Speaker of Parliament has said it is within the right of the lawmakers to inform the public about their personal status if they wish so.

Families Of Second Lady Petitions Parliament to Reject EC’s CI

The Fulani Community in Ghana has appealed to Parliament to reject the current Constitutional Instrument (CI) in its current state from the Electoral Commission.

In a statement, the Fulanis said it will be disenfranchised if the Electoral Commission insists on the two main means of proof of citizenship – Ghana card and Passport– in the upcoming voter’s registration exercise.

According to the Fulanis, the National Identification Authority refused to register them for the Ghana cards and they are also denied the opportunity of securing passports as Ghanaians.

In a statement signed by its National Secretary Yakubu Musah Barry, the Fulani Community appealed to Parliament to reconsider the Constitutional Instrument before the House since it has the potential to deprive the chance to vote as Ghanaians.

“The Tabital Pulaaku International Ghana Chapter and Danbaki Royal family representing the entire Fulani Community in Ghana, held several news conferences to voice their concerns in respect of the way and manner the Fulani citizens of Ghana are being discriminated against and eventually denied the acquisition of passports and the NIA cards (Ghana card). Our countless calls and reports have not yet received any national attention. In view of the current debate ongoing in the country with regards to the Constitutional Instrument (CI) laid in Parliament by the Electoral Commission (EC).

“We the entire membership of the Fulani Community in Ghana wish to call on Parliament to reject the CI in its current state. Passing or accepting the CI in its current state amounts to disenfranchising the entire Fulani Community in Ghana. We are adequately informed that the EC is seeking to use only the passport and the NIA card(Ghana card) as requirement for registration. We therefore call for the amendment of the CI to include other national documents such as the Birth certificate, voter ID etc or we call for a total rejection of the CI”.

The statement added: “We the Fulani Community in Ghana would continue to resist any attempt by any National Public institution that tries to de-nationalize Fulanis in Ghana.”

“Okyehene to Counter House of Chiefs Warning to the EC?”

Pressure is mounting on the Chief of Akyem Abuakwa Amotia Ofori Panyin and some other chiefs to counter and dilute the effect of the advise to the EC from the National House of Chiefs. The Akyem Abuakwa hene and some other chiefs who are close allies of prez Akuffo addo always disagree with the national house of chiefs whenever they issue a statement against the NPP government.

The National House of Chiefs issued a statement cautioning the electoral commission of Ghana to be very careful of not disenfranchising and bringing electoral violence to Ghana since the tangent they moving on towards the compilation of a new voters register is a very slippery and can lead to Civil war. Part of the statement issued by the electoral commission said ”

Central to the escalating tension is the decision of the electoral commission to compile a new voter’s register. Unfortunately, the EC failed to honour invitations to the national house of chiefs, when our traditional leaders wanted the opportunity to promote dialogue in the interest of peace.

We want to call on the EC to make peaceful conduct of this year’s general elections its primary objectives. It would require, among others, that no qualified Ghanaian is disenfranchised, and that the elections are free and fair.

We all have to remember that power is not exercised in a vacuum, and so it would be naïve of anyone to think that a constitutionally created “independent body” has unbridled power. That cannot be the intention of the framers of our constitution”

It will be recall that the Akyem Abuakwa hene and his allies issued a counter statement against the national house of chiefs when they asked prez Akuffo addo not to politicize the district assembly elections and for the president to call off his proposed referendum in December, 2019.

For this reason it’s clear a statement may be issued by Amotia Ofori Panyin opposing or in disagreement of the statement issued by the National House of Chiefs.

Be careful not to cause Civil war in Ghana – National House of Chiefs warns EC

The brouhaha over the decision by the Electoral Commission to compile new voters register for the 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary elections keep heightening with many sound thinking Ghanaians cautioning the Jean Mensa led EC to be mindful of their actions which is slowly setting Ghana ablaze.

The National House of Chiefs in the mid-hours of Sunday 31st May, 2020 issued a press release cautioning the electoral commission of Ghana to be very careful of their dealings so that they don’t Plunge Ghana into Civil War.
Part of the release said “We want to call on the EC to make peaceful conduct of this year’s general elections its primary objectives. It would require, among others, that no qualified Ghanaian is disenfranchised, and that the elections are free and fair.”

The respected chiefs further stretched on the disobedience of the Jean Mensa led EC for refusing to honor their invitation in February this year to jaw- jaw on their plans to compile a new voters register. “Unfortunately, the EC failed to honour invitations to the national house of chiefs, when our traditional leaders wanted the opportunity to promote dialogue in the interest of Peace.” They said.

Countless Civil society organizations, political parties, leading members of NPP like PC Appiah Ofori, Dr. Wireko Brobey “Tarzan”, journalist like Kwasi Pratt, Manasseh Azure Awuni, Kwabena Bobbie Ansah, Bright Simons among others have kicked against the EC’s decision to compile a new voters register but the Jean Mensa led EC have turned deaf ears to their advice.

Below is details of the full statement of the respected chiefs of ghana

We are very concerned about the growing tension in our country, at a time when we are confronted with a lot of challenges – COVID19 pandemic, CSM epidemic, flooding, joblessness —that naturally require that we stick together and work towards finding the appropriate solutions

In the face of these challenges, what Ghanaians need is hope, not fear. But sadly our airwaves are filled with intimidation, and threats of anarchy, mayhem, war…. Our political leaders appear to be more concerned about winning power, than the development needs and the happiness of our people.

That cannot be the intention of the framers of our constitution.

We humbly ask for sober reflection, an honest evaluation of our progress as a nation over the past 63 years, and a recommitment by all Ghanaians to the ideals that inspired our founding fathers.

We need to give substance to their claim that the black man is capable of managing his own affairs.

At this time when unimaginable atrocities are being visited on the black man in various parts of the world, we need to work together to strengthen the peace, and create harmonious living conditions at home, so that xenophobic isolation abroad would not be preferred by our people.

As chiefs, we have the responsibility, and the duty, to speak objectively on national issues, and in defense of the national interest.

So at this crucial time, we owe a sacred duty to our people to remind all of us about the “pledge to be faithful and loyal to Ghana, my motherhood”. That is why we are asking all Ghanaians to subordinate individual interest and political party loyalty to the national desire for peace, unity and development.
