President Mahama Welcomes Cardinal Appiah Turkson Ahead of Ghana’s First National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving

A National Homecoming: Cardinal Turkson to Lead Ghana’s First Interfaith Thanksgiving Service

President John Dramani Mahama on Monday evening warmly welcomed Peter Cardinal Appiah Turkson back home to Ghana ahead of the nation’s first National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving scheduled for Tuesday, July 1, 2025.

The cardinal is set to deliver the keynote sermon at the Christian ceremony, marking the beginning of an interfaith initiative that includes both Christian and Muslim thanksgiving services to promote unity, faith, and national reflection.


“When Your President Calls, You Say Yes”

In response to the invitation, Cardinal Turkson humbly noted,

“If the President of your country calls, you can’t say no.”

The Vatican-based Cardinal emphasized the essential partnership between faith and governance in shaping Ghana’s development and democratic stability. He encouraged the government and the church to work hand in hand to provide moral guidance and societal direction.


Catholic Church to Champion Sustainability Initiatives

In his remarks, Cardinal Turkson also shared insights into a new Catholic pilot project in Nigeria aimed at sustainable development, hinting that similar programs will soon be replicated across Africa, including Ghana. He proposed leveraging existing church structures to promote environmental stewardship and social responsibility.


July 1 Declared National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving

President Mahama has officially instituted July 1 as a National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, a new public initiative aimed at fostering unity, healing, and national purpose.

The first interfaith event will be held on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, featuring both Christian and Muslim prayers, with Cardinal Turkson delivering the Christian sermon.
