Ferdinand  | PoliticsGhana | February 10 | NPP MP Dominic Nitiwul Reveals Personal Rice Stocks Amid Falling Food Prices

Bimbilla MP Dominic Nitiwul reveals he has 100kg of rice at home as food prices drop from GH₵1,000 to GH₵400, citing savings for household use.

Accra, Ghana – February 10, 2026

Dominic Nitiwul, Member of Parliament for Bimbilla Constituency and Defence Minister, today disclosed in Parliament that he personally benefits from the recent decline in food prices.

The NPP lawmaker said he currently has 100kg bags of rice stored at his residence. He explained that last year at this time, the same quantity of rice cost GH₵1,000, but the price has now dropped to GH₵400 per bag.

“This allows me to purchase more for my household at a much lower cost,” Nitiwul told Parliament during discussions on rising living standards and food affordability.

Context: Ghana’s Falling Food Prices

Ghana has witnessed a gradual reduction in key staples over the past year, largely due to increased local production and stabilization of import costs. Economists suggest that lower rice and maize prices could ease the burden on Ghanaian households, particularly in urban centers where food expenditures are high.

Political Implications

While Nitiwul’s disclosure drew attention, some political analysts warn that MPs publicly sharing personal stockpiles could spark debate about fairness and access, especially for citizens struggling to afford basic commodities.

What Comes Next

Parliament continues deliberations on strategies to stabilize food prices and ensure equitable access. The Ministry of Food and Agriculture is expected to present its latest interventions in upcoming sessions.

Conclusion

Nitiwul’s candid acknowledgement highlights both the positive impact of falling food prices and the delicate balance lawmakers must maintain in public perception when discussing personal benefits.

Parliament Divided as Government Signals Tough 2026 Budget Measures

Ferdinand  | PoliticsGhana | February 10 | Parliament Divided as Government Signals Tough 2026 Budget Measures

Ghana’s Parliament is sharply divided as Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson signals strict fiscal measures in the 2026 budget, sparking debate on spending priorities.

Accra, Ghana – February 10, 2026

Ghana’s Parliament was a scene of intense debate this week as lawmakers clashed over the government’s preliminary posture on the 2026 national budget. The rift emerged over the announced fiscal direction, which emphasizes debt control and revenue measures that many in the Minority argue could squeeze social programs.

The focus of the debate was a detailed outline presented by Hon. Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, the Minister of Finance, who said the government must tighten fiscal discipline while creating fiscal space for priority sectors. Dr. Forson has been serving as Finance Minister since January 2025, after his nomination by President John Dramani Mahama and approval by Parliament.

Government Pushes for Fiscal Discipline

In his address, Dr. Forson said the 2026 budget reflects a commitment to consolidate fiscal stability and strengthen investor confidence. He outlined plans to maintain a disciplined fiscal stance, tighten revenue mobilization, and control public expenditure growth.

Dr. Forson told lawmakers that Ghana’s public finances need careful management to ensure long-term growth. “The budget must be grounded in reality,” he said, pointing to the need for responsible debt management and strict expenditure control. His remarks align with government priorities to maintain a primary surplus target and reduce debt vulnerabilities in the medium term.

Analysts note that this stance builds on measures introduced since the Mahama administration took office, including efforts to restore fiscal discipline, control inflation, and stabilize the cedi, creating a base for renewed economic expansion. External observers have also noted positive economic signals, such as projected growth and tighter public spending measures.

Minority Raises Concerns

Opposition lawmakers reacted strongly to the proposed fiscal approach. Members of the Minority caucus warned that strict fiscal control could reduce funding for essential social programs, including education, healthcare, and social protection schemes.

The Minority, pressed the Majority to clarify how vulnerable groups would be shielded from any spending cuts. “While we agree that fiscal discipline is necessary, fiscal consolidation must not come at the expense of basic services,” she said during Tuesday’s session.

The Minority also called for greater transparency on debt and revenue projections, and for more robust parliamentary oversight before the budget is finalised.

Broader Political and Economic Implications

The budget debate comes at a politically sensitive time as Ghana moves closer to its next general elections. Analysts say that how the government balances fiscal restraint with social welfare priorities will influence political narratives across the country.

Economists stress that maintaining macroeconomic stability is crucial if Ghana is to enhance investor confidence and sustain growth. But they also caution that a narrow focus on fiscal targets without cushioning social impact could erode public support. This tension between economic prudence and social demands was at the heart of yesterday’s parliamentary exchanges.

Civil Society Voices Call for Public Engagement

Civil society organisations have urged Parliament to broaden the consultation process. Groups such as the Integrated Social Development Network have called on lawmakers to involve citizens in budget discussions to deepen public understanding of trade-offs and priorities.

Civil society advocates argue that transparency and inclusive dialogue will help ensure that budget decisions reflect the needs of ordinary Ghanaians rather than narrow political interests.

What to Expect Next

Parliament is preparing to hold committee hearings and sector-specific consultations as the budget process unfolds over the coming weeks. Lawmakers from both sides are expected to table amendments and alternative proposals, signalling that the budget debate will extend into a defining political moment.

Observers predict that the outcome will not only shape Ghana’s economic direction in 2026 but will also inform campaign narratives as political stakeholders position themselves ahead of the next election cycle.

Conclusion

Ghana’s 2026 budget debate has exposed clear divides within Parliament. Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson’s push for fiscal discipline and revenue reforms has met vocal resistance from the Minority, which insists on stronger social protections. As negotiations continue, the balance struck between economic stabilisation and public spending will be central to policy, political discourse, and public expectations.

How to Correct Errors on Your GES Payslip: A Practical Guide for Teachers

1
Government GES CONTROLLER Introduces New Online Payslip System for Public Sector Staff

Ferdinand  | PoliticsGhana | February 10 | How to Correct Errors on Your GES Payslip: A Practical Guide for Teachers

Discover how to correct errors on your Ghana Education Service (GES) payslip. Follow this step-by-step guide to report salary discrepancies, wrong deductions, or missing allowances through the proper channels.

Salary discrepancies on the Ghana Education Service (GES) payroll can arise from promotion updates, study leave status, transfer postings, allowance adjustments, or data entry errors. When such issues occur, they must be addressed promptly through official administrative procedures.

Below is a clear guide to help teachers correct errors on their GES payslips.

Step 1: Identify the Specific Error

Before reporting, examine your payslip carefully. Common errors include:

  • Incorrect basic salary after promotion
  • Missing responsibility or deprived area allowance
  • Unauthorised deductions
  • Wrong SSNIT or tax details
  • Salary step not reflecting current rank
  • Arrears not paid

Download and keep copies of the affected payslips as evidence.

Step 2: Inform Your Head of Institution

All payroll concerns should first be reported to your Headteacher or Head of Institution.

Submit a written complaint outlining:

  • Your full name
  • Staff ID number
  • Current rank and step
  • Description of the error
  • Month(s) affected

Attach supporting documents such as:

  • Promotion letter
  • Upgrade letter
  • Transfer letter
  • Study leave approval
  • Appointment letter

The Head of Institution will verify and forward the complaint to the District Education Office.

Step 3: Follow Up at the District Education Office

The District Human Resource or Payroll Officer will:

  • Cross-check your records
  • Confirm your staff data on the payroll system
  • Liaise with the Regional Education Office or Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) where necessary

If the issue relates to delayed promotions or upgrading, ensure your documents have been properly validated at district and regional levels.

Step 4: Escalation to Regional or CAGD Level

Where the district cannot resolve the matter, it may be escalated to:

  • The Regional GES Office
  • Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD)

Payroll corrections at this level may take one to three salary cycles depending on verification and approval processes.

Step 5: Monitor Your Subsequent Payslips

After submission, continue checking your monthly payslip through the official payroll portal:

https://gogepayservices.com

Confirm that:

  • Adjustments have been effected
  • Arrears have been paid where applicable
  • Deductions are corrected

Keep copies of all correspondence until the issue is fully resolved.

Important Considerations

  1. Payroll corrections are not automatic. Proper documentation is essential.
  2. Promotions must be validated and inputted before financial clearance reflects on payslip.
  3. Unauthorized deductions should be reported immediately to avoid prolonged recovery delays.
  4. Always use official communication channels. Avoid informal intermediaries.

When to Seek Union Support

If there is undue delay or administrative inaction, teachers may consult:

  • GNAT
  • NAGRAT
  • CCT-GH now PRETAG

Union representatives can help follow up with district or regional authorities.

Conclusion

Correcting a GES payslip error requires patience and proper documentation. Teachers are encouraged to keep copies of all official letters, monitor their payroll status regularly, and follow due administrative procedures.

NDC Clears Baba Jamal to Contest Ayawaso East By-Election After Probe

NDC Clears Baba Jamal to Contest Ayawaso East By-Election After Probe

Ferdinand  | PoliticsGhana | February 10 | NDC Clears Baba Jamal to Contest Ayawaso East By-Election After Probe

The NDC has cleared Mohammed Baba Jamal to remain its parliamentary candidate for the Ayawaso East by-election after an internal committee found no sufficient evidence to disqualify him over vote-buying allegations.

The National Democratic Congress has cleared Mohammed Baba Jamal to contest as its parliamentary candidate in the upcoming Ayawaso East by-election following an internal investigation into allegations of vote buying during the party’s recent primary.

The decision comes after a three-member committee established by the party submitted its findings on claims that some aspirants induced delegates during the parliamentary primary held on Saturday, February 7.

Committee Finds No Grounds for Disqualification

According to a Citinewsroom report, sources within the party have confirmed that the investigative body found no sufficient evidence to overturn Baba Jamal’s victory or disqualify him from contesting the by-election.

The committee was tasked to examine allegations that television sets and cash were distributed to delegates ahead of or during the primary. The claims sparked internal debate and renewed scrutiny of monetisation practices in party elections.

Party insiders indicate that the panel reviewed formal petitions, assessed available material evidence, and engaged relevant stakeholders before reaching its conclusion.

Nomination Filing Expected

Following his clearance, Baba Jamal is expected to file his nomination papers with the Electoral Commission on Wednesday, February 11, in preparation for the by-election.

He had earlier denied all allegations of vote buying, insisting that his campaign complied fully with the party’s rules and guidelines.

Background to the By-Election

The Ayawaso East parliamentary seat became vacant after the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Naser Toure Mahama. The Electoral Commission is expected to conduct a by-election to fill the vacancy in accordance with constitutional provisions.

While the committee reportedly acknowledged broader concerns about the role of money in internal political contests, it maintained that the evidence presented did not justify punitive action against the candidate.

The development clears the way for what is expected to be a closely watched by-election in one of Accra’s key constituencies.

Berlin’s Mohrenstraße Replaced in Historic Move, Now Honours Ghanaian Philosopher Anton Wilhelm Amo

Ferdinand  | PoliticsGhana | August 30 | Berlin’s Mohrenstraße Replaced in Historic Move, Now Honours Ghanaian Philosopher Anton Wilhelm Amo

Berlin’s Mohrenstraße is now Anton-Wilhelm-Amo-Straße. Discover the historic court ruling, the Ghanaian philosopher’s legacy, and what this means for Germany’s colonial reckoning.

In a landmark decision that acknowledges a contentious colonial past, the Berlin Administrative Court has decreed that the central city thoroughfare formerly known as Mohrenstraße shall be renamed Anton-Wilhelm-Amo-Straße.

This significant ruling brings to a close a protracted and deeply felt debate concerning the identity of public spaces within the German capital. The appellation “Mohrenstraße,” which had endured for centuries, was widely regarded as carrying pejorative and racist connotations, a vestige of the nation’s colonial history.

The appellation’s precise origins were a matter of some historical ambiguity; however, it is broadly considered a reflection of Germany’s colonial engagements, including within the Gold Coast, contemporary Ghana.

In a singular act of reparation, the city has chosen to honour a figure of profound intellectual stature. Anton Wilhelm Amo (c. 1703–1759) was born in what is presently Ghana. As a child, he was brought to Germany, where he surmounted immense adversity to become the first African philosopher and jurist to lecture at European universities.

Amo published significant works on philosophy, jurisprudence, and the principles of universal human rights. He is rightly celebrated as a pioneering figure in African-European intellectual history, a man who constructed bridges of understanding between cultures.

The newly christened Anton-Wilhelm-Amo-Straße is situated in a symbolic location, directly adjacent to the German Federal Foreign Office. This is a building where, as the office noted, work continues daily to foster and strengthen the robust relations between the Federal Republic of Germany and the Republic of Ghana.

The renaming has been met with approval from numerous quarters. As the esteemed publication Der Spiegel proclaimed, “Anton-Wilhelm-Amo-Straße is the winner of the day.”

This decision transcends the mere altering of a street sign; it represents a conscious effort by the city to engage with its historical narrative. It replaces a term deemed offensive with a celebration of the immense contributions a Ghanaian thinker made to the intellectual fabric of Germany centuries ago.

Prove legitimacy by September 1 or lose your license – Lands Minister warns 907 small-scale mining license holders

Prove legitimacy by September 1 or lose your license – Lands Minister warns 907 small-scale mining license holders

In the rigorous exercise, a total of 1,278 licenses were reviewed, out of which 316 were found to be clear of any irregularities.

The remaining 962, however, were fraught with various irregularities, out of which 55 were revoked earlier this year.

Following a plea for extension of the initial deadline, by the Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners (GNASSM), the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources obliged and extended the deadline to the end of August 2025.

  3. It’ll be difficult for China to cancel Ghana’s debt – Isaac Adongo

With the expiration of the ultimatum drawing close, the Minister has indicated that all licenses that remain defective by 5pm on 1st September 2025 will be permanently revoked.

This was contained in a statement issued by the License Review Committee of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.

“Affected license holders are therefore reminded to submit any documentation to prove the legitimacy of their small-scale mining licenses to the Ministry on or before 17:00 hrs., 1 September 2025. Failure to do so will result in the revocation of their license by the Honourable Minister,” portions of the statement stressed.

The license review and revocation are part of efforts by the Ministry to sanitize the mining space and combat the menace of illegal mining.

Meanwhile, a robust review of large-scale mining licenses is expected to begin as part of comprehensive efforts by the Ministry to enforce compliance with mining laws and regulations.

Ferdinand  | PoliticsGhana | August 30 | We’re looking at sponsoring not less than 15 nursing tutors to upgrade – Health Minister

The Minister gave the assurance during a ceremony to present to him the prestigious 2025 Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award by the awardee Naomi Ohene Oti.

Naomi Oyoe Ohene Oti, a Ghanaian Oncology Nurse Specialist and Head of Nursing at the National Radiotherapy Oncology and Nuclear Medicine Centre, Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, won the prestigious Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award 2025, receiving a prize of USD 250,000 at a grand ceremony held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

She emerged winner from a highly competitive pool of over 105,000 global nominees.

In the company of some Heads of Institutions, she presented the award to the Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.

‘‘I am here to say thank you to government for the support. And to present the award to you as the Health Minister,” she stated.

The minister used the occasion to outline government’s plans to improve upon nursing services in the country.

“We take notice that Nurses are very important. In fact, there are places you will go and there are no doctors but nurses are available. We have reduced their fees to about half of what they paid last year. Due to the no fee stress, this year they are paying just about GHC3000. This year we are looking at sponsoring not less than 15 tutors, upgrading them…so a lot is being done,” he noted.

“We are also looking at how we can manage the migration. There are a lot of them who have completed and they are at home. You remember when we took over, there was a policy that all those employed after the elections must go home.

“But we ensured it didn’t affect the health sector. So we took onboard not less than 13k without physical space. Now by the grace of God about 7k have been put on the payroll and we are trying to put everybody on the payroll. Government is now trying to manage the migration where will deal with it government to government. Very soon we are going to train a lot of specialist,” he stressed.

An amount of GHC 50,000 cedis was promised the nurse by the Minister to enable her cut down some expenses incurred during the process.

Ferdinand  | PoliticsGhana | August 30 | Unpaid Nurses: 7,000 enrolled, process underway to migrate outstanding numbers – Akandoh

Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh explains the nurse recruitment and payroll process during a visit to Bibiani Hospital, addressing unpaid salaries and next steps.

The Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has provided an update on the recruitment and payment of nurses, confirming that 7,000 are now on the government payroll while steps are being taken to migrate the rest.

He made these comments during an unannounced visit to Bibiani Government Hospital in the Western North Region on Thursday.

Speaking to nursing staff, the Minister addressed delays in the recruitment process, which began in 2024 but faced administrative setbacks.

“The issue was that in 2024, when your clearance was issued, the process did not start early. Some of you were posted in 2025, and there was a directive that those recruited after December 7 should go home. Do you remember?” he asked. The nurses confirmed they were aware of the situation.

“The President kindly agreed that this rule should not apply to health workers. This is why we were able to keep everyone on board. Out of 15,000 clearances issued, we hired about 13,500. So far, roughly 10,000 have been added to the payroll. Out of these, 7,000 are now receiving regular salaries. The remaining 3,000 are being processed to ensure everyone is paid,” Akandoh explained.

When asked by journalist Evans Nkum about reports that some doctors had not been paid for eight months, the Minister responded cautiously.

“I will have to look into that specific issue before I can comment further,” he stated.

The Minister’s visit and remarks highlight ongoing efforts to resolve delays in salary payments and integrate qualified health staff into the national payroll system.
