Akufo-Addo using soldiers to stop Ewes, non-Akans from registering – Mahama

0

Former President John Mahama has accused President Nana Akufo-Addo of using the military to frustrate people of the Volta region and non-Akans from registering in the ongoing voter registration exercise.

In a statement on Saturday, 1 August 2020, Mr Mahama said: “This is not the Ghana our forebears toiled for and built!”

“Each and every successive President”, he noted, “left a peaceful, stable and united country”.

However, he observed, “The road President Akufo-Addo is taking our beautiful country through, using the military and party thugs to stop people from exercising their right to register and vote in the upcoming December elections, is dangerous and unacceptable”.

He alleged: ‘There have been many reports and video evidence, like the one in this post, of the President’s deployment and discriminatory use of soldiers to target our brothers and sisters in the Volta Region and wherever there are settlements of Voltarians and non-Akans”.

The flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) said: “Executive power must not be used to foment ethnic discrimination and abuse as is happening under Nana Akufo-Addo”.

“These calculated acts of ‘dehumanisation, disenfranchising Ghanaians and stripping them of their citizenship’ must end”, he insisted.

He promised: “They will surely never happen under a new NDC administration because we will foster a spirit of peace and unity in our nation”.

As Commander-in-Chief, Mr Mahama pledged, “I will not use our military in such a partisan manner to terrorise our own people, and in matters that are purely civil and dwell in the very heart of our constitutional democracy”.

The National Democratic Congress Flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has condemned what he calls the “discriminatory” use of military personnel by President Akufo-Addo to disenfranchise Ewes and other non-Akans.

His statement comes on the back of a report in which some military personnel are accused of preventing Ewes in Banda from taking part in the ongoing voter registration exercise.

In a post on his Facebook page, Mr Mahama described the actions of the government as dangerous.

“The road President Akufo-Addo is taking our beautiful country through, using the military and party thugs to stop people from exercising their right to register and vote in the upcoming December elections, is dangerous and unacceptable.”

“There have been many reports and video evidence, like the one in this post, of the President’s deployment and discriminatory use of soldiers to target our brothers and sisters in the Volta Region and wherever there are settlements of Voltarians and non-Akans,” he added.

The former president also indicated that such acts will not be permitted should he be voted into power.

“Executive power must not be used to foment ethnic discrimination and abuse as is happening under Nana Akufo-Addo. These calculated acts of “dehumanisation, disenfranchising Ghanaians and stripping them of their citizenship” must end. They will surely never happen under a new NDC administration because we will foster a spirit of peace and unity in our nation.”

“As Commander-in-Chief, I will not use our military in such a partisan manner to terrorise our own people, and in matters that are purely civil and dwell in the very heart of our constitutional democracy.”

Nana Addo justifies military deployment

President Akufo-Addo, in an address to the nation on Monday, June 29, 2020, justified the deployment of military personnel along the country’s borders saying it was in the best interest of the country.

He said the deployment was to save the country against the intrusion of foreign nationals who have the potential of jeopardising Ghana’s democracy and health efforts in these crucial moments.

“The longstanding deployment of security personnel, especially the military, along our borders is another dimension of this process of guaranteeing the peace of the nation.”

Ghana’s Minister for Defence, Dominic Nitiwul also assured Ghanaians of the Ghana Armed Forces’ unalloyed allegiance and service.

According to him, the military will not compromise the safety of Ghanaians for the interest of any individual, political party or tribe.

Forget Ghana, Bafana are Zimbabwe’s toughest World Cup foe – Karuru

0

Zimbabwe midfielder Ovidy Karuru believes South Africa will be the Warriors’ ‘toughest’ opponent in the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers, while dismissing Ghana from providing a stern challenge in the same group.

Group G of the road to Qatar contains Zimbabwe, South Africa, Ghana and Ethiopia with the qualifiers having been initially scheduled to kick off in September 2020 before the coronavirus pandemic struck.

It is the Zimbabwe-South Africa home and away fixtures, dubbed ‘The Battle of Limpopo’, which are eagerly anticipated by Stellenbosch midfielder Karuru in this group.

“We have been waiting to play Bafana Bafana,” Karuru told Cosafa TV. “We always want to play against South Africa, because when we are here [in the Premier Soccer League] at our clubs, we always talk about it.

“We have missed the Battle of Limpopo,” he added. “I think that one is going to be out toughest game, because South Africa do not want to lose against Zimbabwe and we do not want to lose to South Africa.

“When it comes to Ghana and the other team [Ethiopia], I think we just have to go there and come out with a result, then we take them on in the reverse fixture at our home ground.”

History favours Zimbabwe, who have won seven matches, while Bafana Bafana have recorded six wins, with two games between the neighbours ending in draws.

It is now seven years since the rivals last met when the Warriors edged South Africa 2-1 in an international friendly match at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in September 2013, with Knowledge Musona and Cuthbert Malajila scoring for the visitors, while Bernard Parker pulled one goal back for Bafana.

In the Battle of Limpopo, Peter Ndlovu and Musona are the highest scorers with three goals each, while Delron Buckley and Lucas Thwala follow with each having struck twice.

In this group, only Ghana and South Africa have featured at the World Cup before, while Zimbabwe and Ethiopia are seeking their maiden qualification.

Karuru, who has previously played for French Ligue 1 side US Boulogne, has vowed that the Warriors won’t be on the losing side when they face their near neighbours.

“Against South Africa, there is no home, there is no away for us especially guys playing here in South Africa,” he added. “It’s going to be a tough one. All I can promise is that I don’t see us losing that game.”

The last time the two neighbours met in a World Cup qualifier, South Africa edged Zimbabwe 2-1 at FNB Stadium in May 2001 and Bafana Bafana proceeded to the 2002 tournament in Korea/Japan.

The first leg of that qualifying campaign ended disastrously in July 2000 after 13 fans perished at Harare’s National Sports Stadium in a stampede and the match was abandoned with eight minutes to go as the visitors led 2-0 courtesy of a Buckley brace.

Mahama presided over the worst statistics in our economic history – Akufo-Addo

0

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has described the leader of the opposition, National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama as one that presided over what he calls the worst statistics of Ghana’s economic history.

This follows various calls by the opposition NDC describing the almost four-year tenure of the ruling party as a socio-economic failure.

According to the president, the John Mahama led administration during its tenure picked the economy with an inflow of oil revenue and then sunk it into some 3.4 percent rate of growth when the ruling New Patriotic Party took office in 2017.

Speaking on Ashanti regional-based Wontumi TV on Saturday, August 1, President Akufo-Addo said; “This is the man who presided over the worst statistics in the economic history of our country, who also picked an economy and oil company and then sunk it into a 3.4 percent rate of growth”

“Virtually, every single indices of his management of the economy was the worst performance over the last 30 years in Ghanaian history and so when they speak of my failure I’m not so concerned because it really does not bother my mind and I have to be honest with you about it,” President Akufo-Addo told the host of the show in Kumasi.

President Akufo-Addo added the records of good governance set out by his party [NPP] in a short space of time towers over that of the opposition [NDC].

“Our records and his is definitely chalk and cheese and there’s no comparison between theirs and ours whatsoever so their claims don’t bother me at all. It’s all a part of the politics and I think on the 7th of December 2020, the Ghanaian people will speak and I am confident with the support of the Almighty, the Ghanaian people will speak well”

Meanwhile, Ghanaians will on December 7, 2020, go to the polls to elect a President as part of four-year constitutional mandate in a general election.

The contest will see John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress contend against Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the current President of the Republic and flag-bearer for the New Patriotic Party.

Why should a past president dream of contesting an incumbent? – Akufo-Addo asks

0

President Nana Akufo-Addo has said he still finds it strange that a former president, John Mahama has decided to contest him in the forthcoming elections.

According to President Nana Addo, this is the first time a former president is contesting an incumbent, adding that the NDC’s flagbearer John Mahama has nothing new to offer Ghanaians other than the ‘incompetence and corruption’ Ghanaians witnessed under his tenure.

Speaking in an interview on Wontumi TV, Nana Addo established that Ghanaians will be making a grave mistake if they in the unlikely even vote for the opposition NDC and John Dramani Mahama in the December polls.

“This is the first time in our history that an incumbent president and an immediate past president is contesting for an election. Ghanaians should ask themselves what Mahama used his power for while he was in government. It’s not as though Mahama hasn’t been president before, he has. He did more than four years because he was even a vice president. What did he do? What’s his record that is making him seek a second term?” he queried.

President Akufo-Addo has for that matter appealed to Ghanaians not to make the “biggest mistake” again of entrusting the country’s resources and future into the hands of John Mahama because he believes his performance is the worst in the past 30years.

Meanwhile, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is currently in the Ashanti Region as part of the regional working tour he embarked on since last week.

It was a rousing welcome for the running mate of the National Democratic Congress, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang who visited her hometown, Komenda to seek blessings ahead of a busy campaign period.

A day after her inauguration in Accra, Professor Naana Opoku-Agyemang returned to her hometown to officially announce herself as the NDC’s running mate to the chief and people of the town.

Pictures shared on social media indicate that her arrival was greeted with excitement and jamboree by residents of Komenda.

The former Education Minister also called on the Omanhene of the Komenda Traditional Area, Nana Kojo Kru II to inform him of her mission.

“Under the normal circumstances, I was supposed to visit my father to seek his thoughts when the invitation was extended to me. However, the urgent nature of the invitation made it impossible. All the same, I reached out to my Father on phone for his blessings.

“I’m here to inform my father that what I told him about on phone has in deed, happened and to seek his fatherly blessings. This is why I’m here. My father, here I am. Your daughter is now running mate to the NDC flag bearer”, she said.

Nana Kojo Kru said he was first struck by Naana Opoku-Agyemang’s uniqueness when she was the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast.

He assured her of the town’s support and was hopeful that Komenda was going to be the birthplace of the first Ghanaian female Vice President.

“I discovered your relationship with us and your works, even in Komenda here. I thus got my palace to even hand over the royal staff to you. That staff is the staff of the royal stool. You made it easier for us because you never abandoned us,” he told the NDC running mate.

“You are my daughter, my loving daughter. We gave birth to you for a purpose, and that purpose, you have always lived it. We are proud of you. We know that you were selected not just because you are a woman, but because you are extremely competent,” he said.

Joy FM reports that after the meeting with the chief and elders, Naana Opoku-Agyemang addressed a crowd of ecstatic youth at the Komenda lorry park.

No student has died of COVID-19 – Dr. Aboagye Dacosta

0

The Ghana Health Service has stated categorically that not a single student has been killed by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

Following the outbreak of the virus in some senior high schools across the country and subsequent deaths of some students, many are quick to attribute the deaths to COVID-19.

The latest is the death of a female second-year Gold Track student of Oyoko Methodist Senior High School in Koforidua.

She collapsed while writing Literature in English Paper Thursday afternoon. She was rushed to the St. Joseph Hospital but pronounced dead on arrival.

Kasapa News has gathered that the General Arts student was not well in the last three days, and was treated at the sick bay but collapsed during the examination and died.
