GHS51m refund: Nobody buying Woyome properties – Kan Dapaah

The Minister for National Security, Mr Albert Kan Dapaah, has suggested that assets of private businessman Alfred Agbesi Woyome, which were to be auctioned by the state to defray some money he owes the state should be surrendered to the state to “obviate the need for an auction.”

This follows the inability of the auctioneer to sell Mr Woyome’s assets due to fears by potential buyers that the properties will be restored to Mr Woyome by future governments.

The Supreme Court, in 2019, ordered the sale of properties discovered by the state to belong to the embattled businessman to defray a GHS51.2 million judgement debt paid him which the country’s apex court has ruled must be refunded.

According to the court, a claim by the now-defunct UT Bank that Mr Woyome used two of his houses at Trassaco as collateral for a loan could not be proven.

The court also ruled that Mr Woyome’s quarry was not used as collateral as he and the bank had claimed.

Apart from the two houses at Trassacco, Mr Woyome’s property at Kpehe as well as a stone quarry he owns were to be sold.

They all have a total worth of GHS20 million, according to Deputy Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame.

However, in a letter signed by Mr Kan Dapaah addressed to the Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice with reference to the order by the Supreme Court, the Minister stated that: “The auctioneer tasked with auctioning the properties has indicated his inability to successfully execute the task because potential buyers are afraid, amongst other reasons, that the properties may be restored to Mr Woyome by the state in the future.

It continued that due to this, “it has been decided that the properties be surrendered to the state to obviate the need for an auction” and called on the AG to “take the necessary steps to have the above decision affected.”

Civil war has collapsed football in Somalia – Former coach Bashir Hayford

0

Veteran Ghana coach Bashir Hayford has disclosed that football in Somalia is in a rotten stage as civil unrest has collapsed virtually every facet of life in the war-torn country.

According to the former Kotoko trainer, all the national teams were handed to him as soon as he agreed to become the coach of Somalia.

ISIS backed Islamist group Al-Shabaab has ravaged Somalia with incessant attacks on citizens and government officials making Somalia almost a failed state.

But strange enough Bashir Hayford took over the Somalian national team in 2019 signing a two-year contract to replace Somalian native Mohamed Abdulla Farayare.

The Ghanaian trainer left the job in February 2020 as the numerous attacks and security threats from Islamic militants Al Shabaab forced him out for his own safety.

Bashir Hayford has revealed the problems he faced in Somalia recounting players did not care about the national team, all matches are played in one venue among others.

“I met so many challenges because of the Civil War in Somalia, their football collapsed, all their National teams were handed to me. They play their matches in one venue, players refused to join National teams because they don’t value it, they don’t have any professional players”, the veteran gaffer told West FM.

Now unattached, Bashir Hayford is hoping to be handed the technical directorship role of the Ghana Football Association.

Extend Police Training Period To More Than a Year – Kwabena Frimpong appeals

The security force of the state, responsible for the prevention and detection of crime and the maintenance of public law and order is the Police Service. They are supposed to be friends of the residents in the community where they protect life and property.

This responsibility could be carried out in a more professional manner if the period of time used to train new police personnel is extended beyond the current six months period.

It is evidently clear that the six months period used to train new recruits is woefully inadequate.
This Mr. Kwabena Frimpong, a social commentator sees as a setback on the effective Police Service the nation seeks to achieve.

On Friday 22nd May 2020, Mr Kwabena Frimpong lamented on Boss fm Morning show, hosted by Wofa Kofi Appiah, that as a result of the shorter period used in training the personnel recruited into the police service, there seems to be a rush on the training and this does not help in any way as they fail to acquire the necessary professional skills needed for effective policing. He has therefore called for a national discourse on the issue for the necessary amendments to be effected.

Check This Out: Election 2020: Don’t do what you want, consult parties – Agyinasare to EC

Mr. Frimpong in his submission posited that most of the actions taken by some police personnel expose them as not been much equipped for the needed professional skills for the job. This he said is evident from the manner in which many police personnel respond to matters when called to duty. He cited an instance of a case which he personally chanced upon a policeman compelling someone who had not put on a nose mask to buy one from the nearby seller by force. He personally wanted to give a nose mask to the person to resolve the matter amicably, but the policeman insisted on the person buying one from the seller. This behaviour of the policeman portrayed him as a businessman and not as a paece officer.

Check This Out: JUST IN: Ellis Ferdinand makes ‘2020 Top 50 Ghanaian Bloggers’ Ranking List

“The Police as we know are supposed to be friends of the citizenry but we see otherwise”, Mr Frimpong opined. He sorrowfully cited another scenario where a driver who has lost his way in the Kumasi city asked for direction from a policeman on duty but was blatantly refused.

He continued that the attitude put up by some policemen when they are effecting arrest of a suspect leaves much to be desired. They exhibit violent conduct that brings the name of the noble profession into disrepute.
Mr Frimpong continued that recently a driver reportedly lost control of his steering wheel and rammed his car into a stationary truck on the shoulder of the road, killing a precious and an innocent soul, all because a policeman was chasing him for not wearing a nose mask, a situation that could have been avoided if professionalism was a play.

“I do not blame the policemen, but rather the shorter period of their training’ he lamented.
He, therefore, recommended refresher courses to be held for serving officers apart from extending the period of training for new recruits. This he said will go a long way to ensure that the right personnel are employed into the service to ensure a high sense of professionalism in all their daily activities.

Review constitution to extend Akufo-Addo’s first term mandate – Methodist Bishop

A Methodist Bishop, Very Reverend Bruce Solomon, superintendent minister of the old Tafo Methodist Church has called on lawmakers to review the current constitution to enable an extension of Akufo-Addo’s presidency.

Speaking with Kwame Tanko on ‘Angel in the Morning’ on Tuesday, May 26, 2020, he said the current four-year tenure did not provide ample time for a President to put in place the right structures to implement all of his government’s policies, citing COVID-19 as a hindrance to the implementation of some government projects this year.

‘We were not made for the constitution, the constitution was made for us. So if for some reasons we cannot go as stated in the constitution why can’t we amend? The country is currently battling COVID-19, that notwithstanding, we do not know our situation and way forward with this pandemic. why then do we rush to conduct an election?.’

‘All I seek to be done is for lawmakers to meet and devise a strategy to extend Akufo-Addo’s tenure of office by either a year or more. It could even be less just to make way for health officials to access the impact of the virus and way forward. We need not trade human lives for an election. Do we kill the people whom we seek to vote us into power? he queried.

He added that Ghana though a sovereign country is copying practices and electoral laws of other countries.

Check This Out: JUST IN: Ellis Ferdinand makes ‘2020 Top 50 Ghanaian Bloggers’ Ranking List

‘The kind of democracy we’re practising now was copied from other countries. however, we have to contextualize what these countries have done that we deem right and want to follow. We just copy blindly. See! I believe we can even make changes to the current constitution that permits elected presidents to rule for more than 4 years and that will help the country a lot, he added.

Government’s position

Information Minister, Kwadwo Oppong Nkrumah says the Akufo-Addo Government is not contemplating an extension of its first term constitutional mandate despite the seeming distortion of the political calendar by COVID-19.

The Minister, at a press briefing pointed out that the government does not see any justifiable reason to seek to extend its first term constitutional mandate using the virus as an excuse, without a safe, free and fair election.

“The government is of the view that instead of contemplating measures that are not envisaged in the constitution, our best energies, our innovation and creativity should be invested in exploring how a country like ours can have safe and free elections.”

Political parties stance

General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu believes it is not negotiable that the 2020 general elections “must” be held on December 7 this year.

According to him, it will be chaotic if the elections are postponed.

However, founder and leader of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Mr Kwasi Addae has advised the Electoral Commission (EC) to postpone the 2020 elections to 2021.

According to him, the continuous rise in the infections of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the country would not create an enabling environment for the organisation of a credible parliamentary and presidential election for 2020.

The National Democratic Congress is also calling on the Electoral Commission to as matter of urgency suspend compilation of the new voter register ahead of the December polls.

Claims that NPP are better managers of the Ghanaian economy than NDC inaccurate – ASEPA

The Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) says claims that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) are better managers of the Ghanaian economy are inaccurate.

According to ASEPA, available evidence backed by documents from Ghana International financial donors suggest that the opposition National Democratic Congress does better with the economy.

Check This Out: JUST IN: Ellis Ferdinand makes ‘2020 Top 50 Ghanaian Bloggers’ Ranking List

In a statement Monday, ASEPA said it has obtained documents suggesting that the economy performed poorly when Vice President Bawumia was deputy governor of the Central bank under former President Kufuor.

“Fact is the NPP Government left a totally crushed economy with almost nothing in the coffers plus a single spine pay policy risk to the almost dead Economy. But at the same time Dr.Bawumiah was on campaign platforms bastardising the NDC as worst managers of the economy when his track record at the bank of Ghana was by making the Ghanaian Cedi one of the worst performing currencies in World.

“Folks, this is the legacy of your’s truly Dr. Mahmoud Bawumiah at the Bank of Ghana and also as part of the team that managed the Ghanaian Economy between 2001-2009.

“Folks I am going to show another document, I told you today is revelation day and we shall demystify all the myths that had surrounded our body Politics for so long. The second document I am going to show you will blow your mind…

ASEPA 1

“This is a report by the Standard Bank Group Limited in the UK in somewhere November 2009, less than a year after President Mills assumed office.
The Standard Group carried out its independent assessment of the Ghanaian Economy and 24 other emerging markets,” the statement sign by the Executive director of ASEPA said.

ASEPA 2

ASEPA also claims former President John Mahama turned the course of the economy positively when he took over as President.

Below are details of the statement

Folks today I am going to be revealing some very deep secret about Ghana’s Economy…
I am going to tell you something perhaps you’ve never heard before and that is because some people deliberately decided to change the economic narrative of this Country.
But truth they say stands and today the truth is about to come out…!!!

Did you know that the previous NPP Government left power in 2008 with a totally crushed Economy?
Yes you heard right, the then NPP Government left Ghana’s Economy in a complete abyss with almost everything crushed to the ground before they exited power.

Folks I am going to show you a letter, the World Bank Country Director of Ghana in 2009, wrote to President-elect John Evans Attah Mills.
This letter is dated 3rd January, 2009, When President-elect J.E.A Mills had not even been sworn in as President, the World bank decided to write to him to notify him of the severity of the mess his Government would be inheriting so he would be prepared for it.

Relax, I am going to share with you this letter which till date only Prof.Mills and few people around him at the time may have seen because Prof.Mills decided not to make this letter public.

The first paragraphs of the letter reads and I quote…

Your Excellency President-Elect,

“As a close and trusted partner of Ghana, I feel that it is the World Bank’s responsibility to alert you even before you are sworn in of the difficult financial situation Ghana finds itself, and to offer the World Bank full support to you and your new Government in dealing with these difficulties”

“As you are well aware, the macroeconomic situation that your Government is inheriting is unfortunately extremely worrisome.
Both the fiscal deficit and the balance of payments deficit are high and at unsustainable levels. Given the current state of the International financial markets, we do not believe that these deficits can be financed in 2009 as they were in 2008.”

Folks this the first few paragraphs of the letter dated 3rd January, 2009 signed by Mr. Ishac Diwan, World Bank Country Director for Ghana at the time warning the new President J.E.A Mills of how hopeless the situation was for Ghana.

The letter further goes on to give a full verdict of Ghana’s Economy in details and how gloomy things were and was going to be for the Country because of the havoc the NPP had wrecked on the economy.

Ladies and Gentlemen, your’s truly Dr. Bawumiah was then the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank and part of the team that created this economic mess and again was brought in as a Running Mate to Nana Akufo Addo in the 2008 elections.
Folks, this is the track record of Dr.Bawumiah that earned him the Running Mate slot for the NPP in 2008(can you imagine)

Ladies and Gentlemen, I am telling you this so you can appreciate and understand that the assertion that NPP are better managers of the Economy is nothing but a “fallacious” myth which would be demystified today after reading this article.

And trust me, even the IMF and the World bank are fully aware that the NPP are worst managers of the Ghanaian Economy and that is exactly what the World Bank’s Country Director meant in his letter to Prof. Mills.

Now let’s move on, take your time and follow the conversation, so you don’t miss anything…

By the time the NPP exited power in 2009, Ghana’s real GDP stood at 9.1%, the overall macroeconomic situation had seriously deteriorated on the account of huge fiscal and current deficits.

The destruction was so monumental that fiscal deficit stood at 14.5% of GDP whiles arrears alone amounted to 22% of GDP and the Public debt stood 36% of GDP even after huge debt forgiveness from HIPC.

Fact is the NPP Government left a totally crushed economy with almost nothing in the coffers plus a single spine pay policy risk to the almost dead Economy.
But at the same time Dr.Bawumiah was on campaign platforms bastardising the NDC as worst managers of the economy when his track record at the bank of Ghana was by making the Ghanaian Cedi one of the worst performing currencies in World.

Folks, this is the legacy of your’s truly Dr. Mahmoud Bawumiah at the Bank of Ghana and also as part of the team that managed the Ghanaian Economy between 2001-2009.

Folks I am going to show another document, I told you today is revelation day and we shall demystify all the myths that had surrounded our body Politics for so long.

The second document I am going to show you will blow your mind…
This is a report by the Standard Bank Group Limited in the UK in somewhere November 2009, less than a year after President Mills assumed office.
The Standard Group carried out its independent assessment of the Ghanaian Economy and 24 other emerging markets.

And within one year Ghana’s Economy which had been written off by the World Bank, has been turned around with the Ghana currency being the best-performing currency among the 24 emerging markets the Standard Group carried this survey on.
For the avoidance of doubt, the emerging markets included, Philippines, Malaysia, South Africa, Nigeria, Turkey, Russia, Mexico, Poland, Hungary,Brazil Chile, Israel,Botswana and others and yes the Ghana Economy was on top of the list as the number one best performing emerging markets as far as our currency was concerned.

And guess who was the Head of the Economic Management Team that achieved this feat within a year, John Dramani Mahama.
Folks, in less than a year, John Mahama (without a PhD in Economics) steered the almost wrecked ship of Ghana’s economy to safety and by mid 2010 and 2011, the economy had taken off recording double digits growth rates for the first time in the fourth Republic.

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is the track record of John Dramani Mahama.

But you see I cannot end this article by pointing out the huge destructions which the World Bank admitted was being done to the Ghanaian Economy during previous NPP Government.
The most significant thing that I want you to note is that in the World Bank’s own words,

NOBODY KNEW THE LEVEL OF DESTRUCTIONS GOING ON AT THE TIME UNTIL THE NPP LOST THE ELECTIONS
I am going to highlight that aspect of the World Bank’s letter so you can appreciate the seriousness of the problem.

And the problem is that just like this current Government, the previous NPP Government was also cooking figures for the International Monetary Agencies just to cover up the mess they had created with the economy.
Suffice to say that it is these same cooked figures that Dr.Bawumiah keep quoting to support his frivolous argument that the NPP are better managers of the economy.(how convenient)

But most importantly, I am bringing this to your attention because history is repeating itself right (it always does) and this time the level of destruction currently being done to the Ghanaian Economy at our blind side is extremely legendary!
Can we ask Dr.Bawumiah how much the Cedi is now to a dollar?
Even In the midst of COVID-19 with reduced imports and almost zero profit repatriation by Multinational corporations, the Ghanaian currency is at its worst moments ever.
(How incompetent can one be)

Fortunately I don’t carry only bad news…
I also bring you good news and hope as well…

There is one man who has done this before, turned the Ghanaian Economy around in 2009 in less than a year after it was run down by the Dr.Bawumiah and the NPP Government.

This man is coming again as President and you can imagine how quick and efficient he will turn this already destructed Economy around this time.

Folks, Hope is here is again!!
