Ferdinand | PoliticsGhana| February 27 |NigeriaElection2023: Follow guidelines or cancel elections, Osuntokun tells INEC

The Director General of, the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council, Akin Osuntokun, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to follow the stipulated guidelines of the Electoral Act or cancel the entire election process.

Osunkotun made the call during a press conference in Abuja on Monday.

According to him, The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), pledged to Nigerians free and fair elections by the passage of the new Electoral Act, adding that the INEC Chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, repeatedly also promised Nigerians and the global community free and fair elections.

Speaking further he noted that the electoral body severally reiterated its readiness to conduct free and fair elections, adding that none of the promises has been kept.

He said, “All the promises made about deploying a fair safe system anchored on Bimodal Voter Accreditation System technology were broken.

“The Internet and social media are watched by videos and photographic evidence of the pervasive violence and attacks that were visited on Nigerians with some attacks still going on in some part of the country as we speak.”

He further noted that the evidence of the collision of INEC and the security forces to subdue the rule of the people was too numerous to be detailed.:

“The INEC guidelines on the conduct of elections were extensively bridged and one has evidently been very reluctant to make adjustments to remedy the situation.

“Contractually to publicly advertised guidelines and conducts of the elections were convinced that the processes leading to the results have been severally compromised.

“Consequently, we regret to state that we have lost confidence in results being collated and being announced.”

He added, “We thank Nigerians and support for our candidate and we assure you that some mandates be surrendered to a desperate gaggle of fair rulers who have done nothing but create issues on our dear country.

“We hope that Nigeria remains peaceful and rule-abiding while assuring that we are doing everything within the law to protect your sacred mandate.

“We hereby call on INEC to future suspend the announcement of the results and follow it soon guidelines or completely cancel the entire election and make plans for another election with strict compliance with the stipulated laws and guidelines,” he urged.

NDC sacks Koku Anyidoho

A former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Samuel Koku Anyidoho, has been sacked from the party.

A letter from the Functional Executive Committee (FEC) of the party dated July 27,  2021, to the former Deputy General Secretary said, “The National Democratic Congress considered the report and recommendations of the National Disciplinary Committee on the case of misconduct and anti-party behaviour brought against you (Mr Samuel Koku Anyidoho), pursuant to Article 48 (1) (9) (a)  of the NDC Constitution.

It added: “The FEC acting in compliance of Article 48 (1) of the NDC Constitution unanimously adopted the report and accepts full responsibility for your expulsion from the party.

“You are, therefore, by this decision of FEC expelled from the NDC and for that matter, you are no more recognized as a member of the party and cannot carry yourself as such.”

The letter asked Mr Anyidoho to, by pursuant to article 48 (10) of the party’s constitution, return any party property that might be in his custody.

The letter signed by the party’s General Secretary, Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketiah added that Mr Anyidoho would forfeit any monies, dues or subscription fees he might have made to the party.

Disciplinary Committee report

The National Disciplinary Committee in its report said, “ Mr Samuel Koku anyidoho is liable  for misconduct and is, therefore, amenable  to disciplinary sanctions specified  under Article 48 ( 9)  of the party’s constitution.”

Koku reacts

When contacted, Mr Anyidoho declined to comment on what he described as “the purported letter.”

That was because, he claimed the party had not officially served him with any letter.

Besides, he said the name that is circulating on social media did not bear resemblance of his name.

 Background

The suspension letter to the former NDC Deputy General Secretary said, the action was taken pending the final determination of a petition submitted to the leadership of the party by some NDC members complaining about Mr Anyidoho’s conduct.

Dated February 8, 2021, the suspension statement signed by Mr Asiedu Nketiah said separate petitions were made to the FEC of the party against Mr Anyidoho for breaching the party’s disciplinary code for its members as contained in the NDC constitution.

“At its meeting on the 20th January. 2021, FEC considered two separate petitions from two registered members of the National Democratic Congress each of which lodged an official complaint against your conduct which is viewed to be in breach of the party’s disciplinary code for its members as contained in the NDC Constitution,” the letter said.

The petitioners were the Oti Regional Communications Officer) of the party, Mr Mubarak Abdul-Karim, and the Bono Regional Deputy Communications Officer, Mr Eric Adjei.

Cape Coast High Court cancels Assin North 2020 parliamentary election results

A Cape Coast High Court has ruled for a fresh parliamentary election to be held in Assin North.

Until then, Mr Joe Gyakye Quayson the Member of Parliament cannot hold himself as Member of Parliament for Assin North constituency.

Check This Out: Ejura murder: Chilling account of how social activist was murdered in cold blood pops up in court

He is however not barred from contesting.

The judge, Justice Kwasi Boakye giving the ruling said the MP, Joe Gyaakye Quayson violated constitutional provisions and other statutory provisions that guided the country’s elections.

The case of the petitioner is that the MP at the time of filing to contest the 2020 parliamentary elections, had not renounced his Canadian citizenship and thus held dual nationality.

He further stated that at the close of nominations on the 9th of October, the Assin MP had not still renounced his Canadian nationality.

He says the Assin North MP who still holds himself as the MP is in complete violation of Article 94 (2a) and the court should declare his election null and void.

On December 30, 2020, a resident of Assin North, Mr Michael Ankomah-Nimfah, filed a parliamentary election petition at the Cape Coast High Court challenging the eligibility of Mr Quayson to be a Member of Parliament.

He contended that the MP was not eligible on the basis that at the time he (Quayson) filed his nomination to contest as a parliamentary candidate, he was still a citizen of Canada.

Such an act, he argued, was against the express provision of Article 94 (2) (a) of the 1992 Constitution and Section 9(2) of the Representation of the People Act 1992 (PNDCL 284).

Among other reliefs, the applicant wanted the Cape Coast High Court to declare the nomination filed by Mr Quayson as “illegal, void and of no legal effect”.

New Patriotic Party is 29 years old today

Today, July 28, 2021, marks the 29th anniversary of the launch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), a day on which all Ghanaians who hold out the hope for a prosperous, stable and peaceful Ghana must rise up and salute.

The NPP has arisen out of the noble right of centre political tradition to which it has consistently kept faith, and which gave rise to the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC), United Party (UP), Progress Party (PP), and the Popular Front Party (PFP).

In all our history and current practices, we have been unshakeable in our beliefs in upholding the tenets of liberal democracy, peace, and prosperity for all of Ghana’s citizens.

Gallant

On this auspicious occasion, I salute all the gallant women and men through whose unstinting efforts, from our very beginning to now, have brought us to this day.

While we celebrate our many successes, we must also examine our present difficulties that encompass us with utmost scrutiny. Twenty-nine years in the political trenches, both internally and externally, will necessarily inflict their consequences.

They have frayed us at our edges and threatens to dull our sense of self and mission. This, we must jealously guard against.

Rededicate

I, therefore, on this occasion, call upon the entire membership, rank and file of the New Patriotic Party and its teeming supporters to rededicate ourselves to our party and all that it stands for with faith and full confidence, and to commit ourselves to its renewal in a new direction.

The battles ahead of us are not for the faint hearted nor can they be won by mere slogans. They call for hard work, zeal and untiring efforts exerted by all.

I am unshakeable in my belief in this, that we together are up to the task.

Legacy of Prof. Mills unmatched — Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama has stated that the legacy and record of former President John Evans Atta Mills remain unmatched in the annals of Ghana’s history.

“He was a team leader and it was under his guidance that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration chalked up most of its notable achievements, including the longest period of single digit inflation in the history of Ghana for two years continuously; the highest economic growth record of 14.4 per cent that placed Ghana at the top of the World Bank ease of doing business survey for West Africa, thus making Ghana the number one preferred destination in West Africa for investors,” he stated.

Former President Mahama said this when the leadership of the NDC commemorated the ninth anniversary of the demise of former President Mills with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Asomdwee Park last Saturday.

Values

He said nine years after his departure, Ghanaians were reminded of the values and principles he (Mills) extolled and lived-by: a Leadership of Service, Compassion, Integrity, Humility, Sacrifice, and Unity.

“Yet, being the humble achiever that he was, Prof., in tandem with the tradition of the NDC, derived no satisfaction or desire to reel off his unmatched economic statistics in self-praise when his work was there to speak for him,” he said.

Former President Mahama said former President Mills demonstrated that one could rise to the highest positions in life — Professor, scholar, expert in his field, and President — and still be a humble learner.

He said Prof Mills was transparent and saw as important the need to account to the people of Ghana.

“He respected Ghanaians. Professor Mills was passionately concerned about wastefulness, profligacy and arrogant dissipation of public funds and resources. He didn’t just espouse his principles; he lived by them,” he said.

Insults

He said President Mills strongly abhorred politics of insults.

“He saw politics as a contest of ideas and was constantly concerned about the need for leaders to be proper role models for the younger generation who were keenly watching and may end up emulating the actions of the political class,” former President Mahama said and added that politics must be a platform and an opportunity to ensure total development and a general improvement in the lives of the Ghanaian.

He urged members and sympathisers of the NDC to continue to be guided by the values of truth, humility, transparency and accountability that were exemplified in Professor Mills.

“It is especially critical for the survival of our nation that the NDC, as a social democratic party, restores these values and principles that have been lost in our country in order to be distinct from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and for our people to begin to hope again and trust in our institutions once again,” he stated.

For his part, the National Chairman of the NDC, Mr Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, urged Ghanaians to rise above partisan politics.

Bird flu hits Accra, Volta and Central Regions

0

The Food and Agriculture Ministry through its Veterinary Services Directorate has confirmed the outbreak of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza disease, otherwise known as Bird flu in some parts of the country.

These are the Greater Accra, Central and Volta Regions.

The outbreak of the disease follows the detection of similar cases in neighboring countries since January 2021.

The Ministry in a press statement said “Through effective surveillance and disease control management, the Veterinary Services Directorate has prevented the extension of the disease into Ghana until now.”

Cases of the Bird Flu disease were previously recorded in 2007, 2015, 2016 and 2018, with a significant economic impact on affected poultry farmers.

It said, “The zoonotic nature of the disease calls for public alert and vigilance to mitigate the possible impact on the poultry industry and public health in general.”

Accordingly, the Ministry announces the following measures for immediate compliance:

  1. A total ban on the importation of Poultry and Poultry products from neighboring countries where the prevalence of the disease has been confirmed.

  2. A ban on the movement of Poultry and Poultry Products within and from the affected regions and districts to other parts of the country, and strict inspection and issuance of permits to cover the movement of all poultry and poultry products from unaffected parts of the country.

  1. Intensification of public awareness and sensitization by Regional Coordinating Councils and District Assemblies, especially in the affected areas.

To further ensure public safety citizens, the Ministry advised that people should

i. report any unusual death of domestic poultry and wild birds to the nearest Veterinary office and public authorities,

ii. avoid the handling of dead birds with bare hands at all cost,

iii. consume only well-cooked poultry meat and poultry products.

The Ministry assured the general public that “there is no cause for fear and panic since the Veterinary Services Directorate is taking all necessary steps to contain the outbreak and spread of the disease to other parts of the country. The success of this call hinges on the full cooperation of the general public.”

Ablakwa advocates for MPs to procure vehicles through private loan arrangements

North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has called on other Members of Parliament to advocate for the discontinuation of the purchase of vehicles for MPs through government loans.

This follows massive backlash from the public after the Deputy Finance Minister, Abena Osei Asare laid a document on the floor of Parliament requesting approval of a $28 million loan facility from the National Investment Bank for the initiative.

In a post on Facebook, Mr Ablakwa said that MPs who need car loans should be allowed to procure their own vehicles through private loan arrangements.

He wrote, “I honestly hope many colleague MPs will agree with me so we join forces and get Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to withdraw his MPs’ car loan agreement from Parliament. As MPs, let us also boldly confront and discontinue the practice of government loans to purchase vehicles for MPs.

“If the executive branch of government does not have the resources to provide duty vehicles for MPs as it does for MMDCEs, CEOs of State Institutions/SOEs, Ministers, Judges, Civil Servants, Security Services, and so on and so forth, then MPs who need car loans should be allowed to make their own private car loan arrangements with the banks just as most private-sector workers do.”

Mr Ablakwa explained that MPs securing their own loans will require that government stops the monthly deductions of MPs’ salaries to pay the $28 million loan.

He stated that MPs will then be free to broker individual car loan deals based on their salary structure, constituency terrain and other personal preferences.

The North Tongu MP wrote, “MPs have been deliberately thrown under the bus and subjected to needless opprobrium one too many.”

Background

The Finance Ministry, on July 7, presented to Parliament a request by the government for a $28 million loan from the National Investment Bank, to finance the purchase of 275 vehicles for the members of the eighth Parliament.

This request received a lot of backlash from the general public with many stating that the government did not have to procure a loan facility for MPs while citizens are going through one hardship or another.

Following the backlash, MP for South Dayi Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor revealed that some MPs go to Parliament in Uber rides which is worrying and unsafe.

Arguing in favour of the agreement, the legislator insisted that MPs deserve better than the $28 million car loan being given to them to purchase vehicles; and should rather be given official cars like members of the Executive and Legislature.

Also, the Public Affairs Directorate of Parliament released a press statement, stating that concerns being raised by the public as to whether the lawmakers are deserving of the facility given the state of the economy is flawed and unfair.

This, the statement said, is because the loan being procured is not free and won’t be paid from the pockets of citizens but is part of the MPs’ conditions of service which is payable during their tenure.

Meanwhile, a document sighted by JoyNews showed that the State will bear 60% of the principal sum and all the interest that will accrue on the loan, while MPs will pay the remaining 40%. Per the arrangement, the state will absorb $373,333.33 representing 60% while an amount of $248,888.89 representing 40% will be paid by MPs.

Per the agreement, if approved by Parliament each of the 275 MPs and each of the 31-member council of state members will receive about $100,000 for the purchase of a vehicle.

However, Keta MP, Kwame Gakpey, said that the government absorbing 60% of the car loan being given to Members of the 8th Parliament places a burden on the MPs, contrary to popular opinion.

According to him, the government instead of absorbing part of the loan should have paid fully for the vehicles as well as absorbing the entire cost of maintenance, fueling, and drivers for the car.

However, following the backlash, Mr Ablakwa believes the political class should not “underestimate the people’s grave revulsion and its volcanic consequences on the stability and sustainability of our democracy.”

He urged MPs to support Speaker Alban Bagbin who has been advocating for a uniform duty vehicle policy in the public sphere which does not discriminate between Ministers, MMDCEs, CEOs, Judges and MPs.

“I strongly believe we can count on his support as we pursue this mission…Deep reflection is needed on just how long the political class can keep stoking the anger levels of the masses beyond boiling point?… Time to adopt a totally new and sincere paradigm.”
