The voters will judge us by our records – Bawumia

0

Vice  President Bawumia has said the 2020 Presidential Election would be decided on the records of the National Democratic Congress under Former President John Mahama and the New Patriotic Party under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo .

“The choice Ghanaians face on December 7 is between John Mahama and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. Thankfully, both of them have records,” Vice President Bawumia said in a release issued by his Office, and copied to the Ghana News Agency, on Tuesday.

“John Mahama was Vice President and President for eight years and Nana Akufo-Addo has been the president for three and half years,” the release quoted Dr Bawumia’s comment, which it said was posted on his official Facebook page. “It is not about what you say in opposition. It is about what you did in government. What matters ultimately to Ghanaians is how these two leaders were able to manage the economy and alleviate the suffering of the people when they were given the opportunity to serve,” he explained.

“Former President Mahama, during the outdooring of his Running Mate on Monday, July 27, promised among other things, to settle monies owed customers of liquidated financial institutions, including DKM, which collapsed during Mahama’s presidency”.

The release said while the Akufo-Addo led Government had settled a number of customers, and the Official Liquidator, Eric Nana Nipa, had started paying claims of staff of liquidated banks; Former President Mahama “poorly supervised the illegal activities of the liquidated banks”. Additionally, it said, 82 licensed financial institutions collapsed during his time in government.

“Nana Akufo-Addo, on the other hand, has rescued the financial system and spent GHC 21 billion to save the deposits of 4.6 million depositors, who would otherwise have lost their savings. DKM depositors will also be paid,” it said.

The release said the Akufo-Addo-led Government was reviving the economy, which was mismanaged under the Former President. All the economic indicators were improving significantly, it added.

Vice President Bawumia, the release said, also listed 50 things the John Mahama administration mismanaged, or failed to implement, which the government of Akufo-Addo had achieved in three and half years.

Coronavirus: Rapid Diagnostic Testing kits falls short of standards – FDA

0

The Foods and Drugs Authority (FDA) on Tuesday said 34 antibody Rapid Diagnostic Testing (RDT) kits submitted for validation for use in COVID-19 detection, have failed to meet best international standards.

Madam Delese Mimi Darko, the FDA Chief Executive Officer, said the acceptance criterion for an RDT validation was sensitivity and a specificity of 99 per cent; stating that the Authority had communicated the results of the test to those who submitted the kits.

“These RDTs have come in from Ghana, China, United States, Canada, Korea, Finland, Malaysia, Singapore and the United Kingdom,” Madam Darko stated in her presentation at the meet the press series organised by the Ministry of Information to give an update on the COVID-19 pandemic.

She said antibody RDT Kits were supposed to be used for preliminary screening or emergency screening in a country when resources were limited; “they use blood samples and they give quick results”.

In response to the growing COVID-19 pandemic and shortages of laboratory-based molecular testing capacity and reagents, multiple diagnostic test manufacturers have developed and began selling rapid and easy-to-use devices to facilitate testing outside of laboratory settings.

These simple test kits are based either on detection of proteins from the COVID-19 virus in respiratory samples (e.g. sputum, throat swab) or detection, in blood or serum, of human antibodies generated in response to infection.

Madam Darko said: “Taking all of them into consideration, we have a specificity of between 85 and 99 per cent and sensitivity between 4 and 54 per cent.

“So if you say that a test is sensitive; it means that it is called a true positive; if you test somebody who is considered sensitive, they would have had the decease before or they are currently having the decease.”

Madam Darko said the specificity of an RDT determines people who have not being exposed before; “so it is what we call the true negative”.

“Why do we require an RDT to be highly sensitive? If an RDT is highly sensitive it means that all the true positives will be captured, if it is highly specific or specificity it means that all the true negatives will also be captured. So the fewer false results you have the better it is for the population.”

She said antibodies tell who had had the virus and how far wide it has spread; stating that, “yet it is a quicker method to use than maybe the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR).

She noted that it takes some of them 15 minutes to display their results.

She said antibody test kits were supposed to be registered by the Food and Drugs Authority before they could be used in Ghana; adding that the RDT kit validation was being done by the FDA in collaboration with Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research and the Public Health Reference Laboratory of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

“They are classified as what we call class four medical devices and the FDA has a guide line for the registration of these medical devices and you require an import permit to bring in even if they are for personnel use,” she said.

Ghana sustains prior gains in malaria prevention

0

Malaria prevalence among children has declined over time, but areas for improvement remain in malaria prevention, according to the newly released 2019 Ghana Malaria Indicator Survey (GMIS).

The 2019 GMIS is the second MIS survey implemented in Ghana. The previous GMIS was implemented in 2016. The survey results, released Tuesday in a virtual dissemination webinar organised by the Ghana Statistical Service and the National Malaria Control Programme, highlight a continued reduction in malaria prevalence among children age 6-59 months.

African Leaders and Advocates, when you think COVID-19, think Malaria! “The results of the 2019 Ghana MIS will be used by the Government of Ghana and the Ministry of Health to inform priorities and strategies for malaria prevention and its eventual elimination,” says Mr Peter Takyi Peprah, a Presenter from GSS.

The 2019 GMIS was conducted between September and November 2019 at the peak of malaria season. All children age 6-59 months living in selected households were eligible for anaemia and malaria testing.

Malaria prevalence according to microscopy among children age 6-59 months has declined from 27% in 2014 to 14% in 2019. Malaria prevalence is more than three times higher among rural children (20%) than urban children (6%). By region, malaria prevalence ranges from a low of 2% in Greater Accra region to a high of 27% in Western region. Overall, 4% of children in Ghana have low haemoglobin. The prevalence of low haemoglobin has decreased by half since 2014, from 8% to the current level.

Prior gains in household ownership and use of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) have sustained since the 2016 GMIS. Three in four Ghanaian households own at least one ITN, and half of households have at least one ITN for every two people who stayed in the household the night before the survey. Over half (54%) of children under 5 and 49% of pregnant women age 15-49 slept under an ITN the night before the survey. ITN use among children under 5 and pregnant women has stagnated since 2016.

Among women age 15-49 who have heard of malaria, 59% have seen or heard a malaria message in the six months before the survey. Women were asked if they had heard about the malaria vaccine and if they would allow their child to be vaccinated against malaria. One in three women have heard about the malaria vaccine, and 9 in 10 women would allow their child to be vaccinated against malaria.

The 2019 GMIS provides up-to-date estimates of basic demographic and health indicators for malaria at the national level, for urban and rural areas, and for each of the 10 former administrative regions.

In 2019, Ghana created 6 new regions; however, the new administrative boundaries were not available during survey design of the 2019 GMIS. A total of 5,181 women age 15-49 were interviewed, representing a response rate of 99%.

The 2019 GMIS was implemented by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) in close collaboration with the Ghana National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) and the National Public Health Reference laboratory (NPHRL) of the Ghana Health Service (GHS).

Financial support for the survey was provided by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI), the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria, and the Government of Ghana.

ICF provided technical assistance through The DHS Program, a USAID-funded project offering support and technical assistance in the implementation of population and health surveys in countries worldwide.

Throwing dirt at magic pick Jane Naana will be difficult – University Lecturer

0

Lecturer at the University of Ghana Business School, Dr. Kobby Mensah has said that if any political party’s strategy is to throw dirt, it will be difficult dealing with the Vice-Presidential candidate of the NDC.

His comment comes after Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang’s outdooring which saw her present a reassuring speech to the people of Ghana.

Her speech has been described by many as weak because they were expecting her to throw tantrums at the governing NPP so they could attack her.

Reacting to developments after the outdooring, Dr. Kobby Mensah who is also a Political Marketing expert described Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as a magical pick.

The University of Ghana lecturer indicated that any opposing political party that will focus on throwing dirt rather than presenting issues will find difficulty in dealing with the choice of Vice-Presidential candidate for the NDC.

He said “If your strategy is only about “throwing dirt” which in most cases that’s all that most of the people in our political parties know how do, you will struggle in dealing with a magic pick like the NDC VP pick #JohnandJane2020“.

Over 96% of locked-up funds in collapsed banks ‘fully paid’ – Deputy Finance Ministe

0

A Deputy Finance Minister, Charles Adu Boahen, has said a big chunk of depositors locked-up funds during the banking sector clean-up have been settled.

He said at least 96% of persons whose monies were locked-up in the collapsed banks and saving and loans companies have received their deposits.

Mr Charles Adu Boahen disclosed that 20% of the funds were paid in cash while 80% was paid through bond issues.

“The bonds were structured to pay out over four years,” Mr Adu Boahen said on the floor of parliament during the debate on the Mid-year Budget Review in Parliament on Tuesday, July 28, 2020.

His revelations follow a promise by former President John Mahama to pay depositors locked-up monies within a year if elected to once again assume the helm of the country’s affairs in the December 2020 presidential polls.

Speaking at an event in the UPSA auditorium to outdoor his running mate, Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Mr Mahama said the next National Democratic Congress (NDC) government will not put up any long-term payment plans that will further worsen the living conditions of the victims of the collapsed institutions.

However, according to Mr Boahen, the claim that funds are still locked-up are untrue, stressing that less than 4% of these monies remain unpaid.

The Deputy Finance Minister said the Nana Akufo-Addo government has set aside GH¢3.1 billion for such payments.

He said the rest of the payments will be done when the court grants the receiver the right to liquidate the assets of the defunct financial institutions.

As part of Ghana’s financial sector clean, the central bank revoked the licences of 347 Microfinance Companies and 23 Savings and Loans and Finance House Companies in 2019, citing insolvency, mismanagement and fraud in some cases.

The Bank of Ghana also revoked the licences of some banks between 2017 and 2019.

Kwamena Ahwoi reveals Rawlings’ role in Nana Konadu’s 2011 defeat

0

Professor Kwamena Ahwoi, a leading member of the National Democratic Congress has disclosed that former President Rawlings’ failure to engage the party’s bigwigs on Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings’ presidential ambitions should be blamed for her defeat.

In 2011, Nana Konadu vacated her position as NDC’s first vice chairperson to contest late president John Evan Atta Mills who had been their candidate since 2000.

It turned out to be a no contest as Mills won with over 96% of votes compared to Konadu’s 3.1%.

Professor Kwamena Ahwoi disclosed on Joy FM that the leadership of the party were kept in the dark over Konadu’s apparent interest in the party’s flagbearership.

He opined that had Rawlings consulted extensively on his wife’s interest, her performance at the polls would have been better.

“In a way, I think that it is because Jerry did not level with us as far as his wife’s interest was concerned that was why things took the direction we did. If we had discussed it, the matter would have been very clear, and the strategy may have been different.”

“Rawlings had never discussed with us the interest of his wife in the Presidency. There had always been rumours that Nana Konadu was interested but this is one issue he never discussed with us,” he stated.

Ahwoi also revealed that Rawlings’ remarks in the lead up to the party’s primaries in 2011, suggested that he was not enthused about Konadu’s move.

“The impression has somehow been created that he himself was not very keen on Nana Konadu assuming the leadership position”.
