Ghanaians pretending they have not seen Domelevo’s victimization by Akufo-Addo – Ekow Gyan

Our hypocritical attitude is obviously a factor that is retarding our progress as a country.
Surprisingly, all so-called neutrals and Civil Society Groups who were loud once upon a time have gone quiet; yes they are all quiet because their darling man is now the President of Ghana, and so, they have suddenly turned blind and deaf.

A. V Dicey’s Principle of Rule of Law has been under attack since Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was sworn in as President on January 7, 2017.

Cast your mind back to the unprecedented dismissal of an EC Chair, Madam Charlotte Kesson-Smith Osei. The independent Electoral Commission Chairperson was unconstitutionally sacked from office and none of us spoke against it.

Just look at how ACP Dr Benjamin Agordzor was illegally handled. This Senior Police Officer was detained for over three months for no wrong done.

Media Men have not been left out of this unwarranted victimization and intimidation including Manasseh Azure formerly of Joy FM and Edward Adeti of Starr FM.

The worst of it all is the murder of an investigative journalist, Ahmed Hussein Suale.

Today, it’s the turn of the Auditor General, Mr Daniel Yaw Domelevo. A man who has discharged his constitutional duties dispassionately, independently and diligently. He has been consistent with his quest to unravel rots and eliminate corruption in the Public Sector; an act which President Akufo-Addo and his appointees have demonstrated they are not in support of, and so, doing everything humanly possible to get rid of him.

I personally do not blame the President for his gross display of hatred for the Auditor General, rather, I blame the millions of Ghanaians including the castrated Peace Council, the Christian Council, Some CSOs, the Media and some so-called neutrals who have decided to not speak against and criticize the President when he goes wrong.

May I take the opportunity to commend the venerable Prof Kweku Asare his for a constant show of statesmanship and patriotism. This a classical example of a man living with Principles.

Yes, President Akufo-Addo’s government may have succeeded in uprooting Charlotte Osei, and victimizing the likes of, ACP Agordzor, Manasseh Azure and Edward Adeti, talk less of murdering Ahmed Suale, we should all be up this time round to protect the Auditor General Mr. Daniel Y. Domelevo.

It will be of no surprise that those who have gone quiet today may suffer same treatment by Akufo-Addo someday.

Let’s stop being hypocritical and use the same energies we used to criticize President Mahama to do the same to President Akufo-Addo.

We understand your ‘ignorance’, we forgive you – Akufo-Addo replies Domelevo

The office of the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has responded to Auditor-General, Daniel Yaw Domelevo, following his public chronicle to the same on matters relating to his mandatory leave directive.

Mr. Domelevo, in a statement dated 03, July 2020 and addressed to the Presidency said, tenets of the country’s law flaw the President’s directive to him, to take a mandatory 132-day leave.

He suggested that the directive was made out of bad faith and was resultant of his work which was ‘embarrassing government’.

A rejoinder from the presidency however seeks to deny same, attributing Mr. Domelevo’s response to ignorance of the laws related to the subject.

“The President has at all times acted based on sound legal principles, the rule of law and good governance practices and the good people of Ghana cannot be misled by your lack of understanding of the position of the law, for which you may be forgiven since you are not a lawyer.”

In a statement signed by Nana Bediatuo Asante, Secretary to the President, and dated 3rd July, 2020, also citing the Labout Act 2003, Section 31 specifically, they noted that Mr. Domelevo could not forgo his annual leave and any agreement to relinquish his entitlement to annual leave or ‘to forgo the leave is void’.

They further noted, that per the holdings country’s courts, and the interpretation of the said Act, the ‘annual leave is mandatory and that one of the purposes of Section 31 is to prevent the worker from converting his accumulated annual leave to cash to the detriment of his health and wellbeing.’

“Thus, your assertion that you may waive your entitlement to annual leave is unlawful and misconceived,” parts of the statement read.

The statement described components of the A-G’s letter as ‘unfortunate’, considering his position, whilst establishing the reasoning behind the President’s directive.

“The assertion that the decision for you to take your accumulated annual leave was not taken in good faith is also unfortunate and without any foundation. The Office of the President did not know that as part of your duties is to keep a record of appointees of the President who have not taken their annual leave since 2017, such that you can make the false claim of selectivity. You can be assured that the decision for you to take your accumulated annual leave was not taken in bad faith. Rather, your own publicization of your deteriorated relationship with your Board which notified you severally of not taking your annual leave, the President was the only person vested with the constitutional power to direct you to proceed on your accumulated annual leave,” parts of the statement read.

They maintained that “the directive of the President stands” with an amendment to 167 instead of the initial 123 days since he added 2020 as part of the leave, in his response to the President.

Accumulated leave directive unconstitutional, reconsider it – Domelevo to Akufo-Addo

The Auditor-General, Daniel Domelevo, has written to President Akufo-Addo urging him to reconsider the directive to proceed on his accumulated leave.

According to him, the directive breaches the labour law and is unconstitutional.

In the letter to the President, he argued that based on recent labour law and practice, “no worker is deemed to have accumulated any leave on account of their having failed, omitted, neglected or even refused to enjoy their right to annual leave, which the law guarantees for their benefit, not the employer.”

“I consider it an honour to be of service to the State and urge that you reconsider the directive in order to protect the sanctity of the labour law, the constitution and the independence of the Auditor-General which is of utmost importance in so far as ensuring that the constitutional principles of probity, transparency and accountability are concerned,” he said in a letter he wrote to the President.

Going on an extended leave means you’re not needed – Labour expert

The auditor general of Ghana, Daniel Domelevo has been asked to proceed on his accumulated leave of 123 days as per the directive from the presidency.

The statement that was issued yesterday from the office of Communications Director at the Jubilee House, Eugene Arhin, stated that Mr Domelovo must take his accumulated leave of 132 working days effective Wednesday, July 1.

This has sparked a lot of discussions in the media space with some experts speaking against the government for compelling the auditor general, who has been critical of them to proceed on leave. With some also believing that should he proceed to go on leave, he would be replaced as the auditor general.

Labour relations expert, Austin Gamey speaking on the development has asserted that for anyone to proceed on such a long leave of 123 days, then it simply implies that individual is not needed in the organization and would be replaced.

He made this statement in an interview on the Happy Morning Show with Samuel Eshun on Happy 98.9 FM.

The labour expert noted that in such an extended leave period, another will take over your role and if “someone is doing something you were busy doing then, we don’t need you anymore.”

“If you go on such a long leave, what is your value to the organization?” he queried.

He proceeded to point out the fact that if a worker forfeits his or her leave in a particular year, that leave period is not moved to the following year but rendered void.”

Mr. Gamey advised the auditor general not to fight the president’s directive saying it might cause some confusion should he do so.

Confusion Rocks Registration Centre In The Ashanti Region over NPP vehicle conveying registration logistics [video]

As the new voter ID cards began this morning, many are the problems facing the process as we reported earlier. Some have to do with the registration machines and the observation of the COVID-19 protocols.

A video sighted by reportghana.com clearly shows the displeasure of the people as some of the Electoral Commissions machines were carried by a party’s car to the registration centre

An N.P.P. car was said to have allegedly conveyed machines, chairs, tables, and other materials of the E.C. needed for the registration to the center.

This did not go well with others who think it against the law and did not hesitate to show their displeasure.

Voters Register: EC official seizes cell phone of Multimedia reporter

Information reaching reportghana.com indicates that an official of the Electoral Commission (EC) at the Akotsi Polling Station at Gomoa in the Central region has confiscated the cell phone of a reporter with the Multimedia Group Limited.

According to the Adom FM reporter, Seth Ankomah Adjei, the EC official pushed him and forcefully took his mobile phone for taking a video of agitations between registrants and one individual believed to be demanding monies from some registrants to skip the queue and quickly get registered.

He noted that the EC official took his cell phone despite telling him he was a reporter with the Multimedia Group.

His phone he says, after being seized for several hours has been given back to him.

The EC official, according to him, is a headmaster of a school in the area.

Reports by the Adom FM reporter indicated that the EC official appeared not to care about the activities of the unidentified man said to be taking monies from some of the registrants to jump the long queue.

“Nothing wrong with EC using my NPP-branded car to convey registration material” – Sly Tetteh

Mr Sly Tetteh, the New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary candidate for Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfrom has said he sees nothing wrong with his private car being used to convey registration materials of the Electoral Commission to registration centres, as part of the voter ID card registration exercise.

He told Kwabena Prah Jnr (The Don) on the Ghana Yensom show on Accra 100.5FM on Tuesday, 30 June 2020 that all the political parties are expected to help the EC carry out the exercise hence, he cannot be faulted for making his car available to the EC to convey its materials.

The opposition National Democratic Congress’ parliamentary candidate for the same constituency, Mr Alexander Ackuoko, raised a protest against the development at the registration centre.

Mr Ackuoko told Kwabena Prah on the same show that the EC had indicated that it was well prepared for the exercise.

“While I was going round, I saw an NPP-branded Pickup rat one of the centres and they said they carried the EC’s logistics to the centre but I said: ‘No. It cannot be done’. This is the work of the EC, the EC has said they are fully prepared for the exercise and, so, NPP’s car cannot be the one to be bringing logistics and materials to the centres. This is not right,” he told The Don.

But Mr Tetteh, who is also the CEO of the National Youth Authority (NYA), said: “I am not even aware that my car is being used because I had just woken up from bed. I went round all the centres in the constituency and, so, I slept very late last night. But I see nothing wrong if my car is being used. As political parties, we can help the EC to carry out its work.”
