Claims that NPP are better managers of the Ghanaian economy than NDC inaccurate – ASEPA

President Nana Akufo-Addo

The Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) says claims that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) are better managers of the Ghanaian economy are inaccurate.

According to ASEPA, available evidence backed by documents from Ghana International financial donors suggest that the opposition National Democratic Congress does better with the economy.

In a statement Monday, ASEPA said it has obtained documents suggesting that the economy performed poorly when Vice President Bawumia was deputy governor of the Central bank under former President Kufuor.

“Fact is the NPP Government left a totally crushed economy with almost nothing in the coffers plus a single spine pay policy risk to the almost dead Economy. But at the same time Dr.Bawumiah was on campaign platforms bastardising the NDC as worst managers of the economy when his track record at the bank of Ghana was by making the Ghanaian Cedi one of the worst performing currencies in World.

“Folks, this is the legacy of your’s truly Dr. Mahmoud Bawumiah at the Bank of Ghana and also as part of the team that managed the Ghanaian Economy between 2001-2009.

“Folks I am going to show another document, I told you today is revelation day and we shall demystify all the myths that had surrounded our body Politics for so long. The second document I am going to show you will blow your mind…

“This is a report by the Standard Bank Group Limited in the UK in somewhere November 2009, less than a year after President Mills assumed office.
The Standard Group carried out its independent assessment of the Ghanaian Economy and 24 other emerging markets,” the statement sign by the Executive director of ASEPA said.

ASEPA 2

ASEPA also claims former President John Mahama turned the course of the economy positively when he took over as President.

Below are details of the statement

Folks today I am going to be revealing some very deep secret about Ghana’s Economy…
I am going to tell you something perhaps you’ve never heard before and that is because some people deliberately decided to change the economic narrative of this Country.
But truth they say stands and today the truth is about to come out…!!!

Did you know that the previous NPP Government left power in 2008 with a totally crushed Economy?
Yes you heard right, the then NPP Government left Ghana’s Economy in a complete abyss with almost everything crushed to the ground before they exited power.

Folks I am going to show you a letter, the World Bank Country Director of Ghana in 2009, wrote to President-elect John Evans Attah Mills.
This letter is dated 3rd January, 2009, When President-elect J.E.A Mills had not even been sworn in as President, the World bank decided to write to him to notify him of the severity of the mess his Government would be inheriting so he would be prepared for it.

Relax, I am going to share with you this letter which till date only Prof.Mills and few people around him at the time may have seen because Prof.Mills decided not to make this letter public.

The first paragraphs of the letter reads and I quote…

Your Excellency President-Elect,

“As a close and trusted partner of Ghana, I feel that it is the World Bank’s responsibility to alert you even before you are sworn in of the difficult financial situation Ghana finds itself, and to offer the World Bank full support to you and your new Government in dealing with these difficulties”

“As you are well aware, the macroeconomic situation that your Government is inheriting is unfortunately extremely worrisome.
Both the fiscal deficit and the balance of payments deficit are high and at unsustainable levels. Given the current state of the International financial markets, we do not believe that these deficits can be financed in 2009 as they were in 2008.”

Folks this the first few paragraphs of the letter dated 3rd January, 2009 signed by Mr. Ishac Diwan, World Bank Country Director for Ghana at the time warning the new President J.E.A Mills of how hopeless the situation was for Ghana.

The letter further goes on to give a full verdict of Ghana’s Economy in details and how gloomy things were and was going to be for the Country because of the havoc the NPP had wrecked on the economy.

Ladies and Gentlemen, your’s truly Dr. Bawumiah was then the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank and part of the team that created this economic mess and again was brought in as a Running Mate to Nana Akufo Addo in the 2008 elections.
Folks, this is the track record of Dr.Bawumiah that earned him the Running Mate slot for the NPP in 2008(can you imagine)

Ladies and Gentlemen, I am telling you this so you can appreciate and understand that the assertion that NPP are better managers of the Economy is nothing but a “fallacious” myth which would be demystified today after reading this article.

And trust me, even the IMF and the World bank are fully aware that the NPP are worst managers of the Ghanaian Economy and that is exactly what the World Bank’s Country Director meant in his letter to Prof. Mills.

Now let’s move on, take your time and follow the conversation, so you don’t miss anything…

By the time the NPP exited power in 2009, Ghana’s real GDP stood at 9.1%, the overall macroeconomic situation had seriously deteriorated on the account of huge fiscal and current deficits.

The destruction was so monumental that fiscal deficit stood at 14.5% of GDP whiles arrears alone amounted to 22% of GDP and the Public debt stood 36% of GDP even after huge debt forgiveness from HIPC.

Fact is the NPP Government left a totally crushed economy with almost nothing in the coffers plus a single spine pay policy risk to the almost dead Economy.
But at the same time Dr.Bawumiah was on campaign platforms bastardising the NDC as worst managers of the economy when his track record at the bank of Ghana was by making the Ghanaian Cedi one of the worst performing currencies in World.

Folks, this is the legacy of your’s truly Dr. Mahmoud Bawumiah at the Bank of Ghana and also as part of the team that managed the Ghanaian Economy between 2001-2009.

Folks I am going to show another document, I told you today is revelation day and we shall demystify all the myths that had surrounded our body Politics for so long.

The second document I am going to show you will blow your mind…
This is a report by the Standard Bank Group Limited in the UK in somewhere November 2009, less than a year after President Mills assumed office.
The Standard Group carried out its independent assessment of the Ghanaian Economy and 24 other emerging markets.

And within one year Ghana’s Economy which had been written off by the World Bank, has been turned around with the Ghana currency being the best-performing currency among the 24 emerging markets the Standard Group carried this survey on.
For the avoidance of doubt, the emerging markets included, Philippines, Malaysia, South Africa, Nigeria, Turkey, Russia, Mexico, Poland, Hungary,Brazil Chile, Israel,Botswana and others and yes the Ghana Economy was on top of the list as the number one best performing emerging markets as far as our currency was concerned.

And guess who was the Head of the Economic Management Team that achieved this feat within a year, John Dramani Mahama.
Folks, in less than a year, John Mahama (without a PhD in Economics) steered the almost wrecked ship of Ghana’s economy to safety and by mid 2010 and 2011, the economy had taken off recording double digits growth rates for the first time in the fourth Republic.

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is the track record of John Dramani Mahama.

But you see I cannot end this article by pointing out the huge destructions which the World Bank admitted was being done to the Ghanaian Economy during previous NPP Government.
The most significant thing that I want you to note is that in the World Bank’s own words,

NOBODY KNEW THE LEVEL OF DESTRUCTIONS GOING ON AT THE TIME UNTIL THE NPP LOST THE ELECTIONS
I am going to highlight that aspect of the World Bank’s letter so you can appreciate the seriousness of the problem.

And the problem is that just like this current Government, the previous NPP Government was also cooking figures for the International Monetary Agencies just to cover up the mess they had created with the economy.
Suffice to say that it is these same cooked figures that Dr.Bawumiah keep quoting to support his frivolous argument that the NPP are better managers of the economy.(how convenient)

But most importantly, I am bringing this to your attention because history is repeating itself right (it always does) and this time the level of destruction currently being done to the Ghanaian Economy at our blind side is extremely legendary!
Can we ask Dr.Bawumiah how much the Cedi is now to a dollar?
Even In the midst of COVID-19 with reduced imports and almost zero profit repatriation by Multinational corporations, the Ghanaian currency is at its worst moments ever.
(How incompetent can one be)

Fortunately I don’t carry only bad news…
I also bring you good news and hope as well…

There is one man who has done this before, turned the Ghanaian Economy around in 2009 in less than a year after it was run down by the Dr.Bawumiah and the NPP Government.

This man is coming again as President and you can imagine how quick and efficient he will turn this already destructed Economy around this time.

Folks, Hope is here is again!!

Election 2020: Don’t do what you want, consult parties – Agyinasare to EC

5

The founder of Perez Chapel International, Bishop Charles Agyinasare, has counseled the Electoral Commission to involve all stakeholders in its plans for a successful 2020 elections.

He said the EC plays a crucial role in Ghana’s democracy hence any decision inimical to Ghana’s electoral fortunes could spell doom for the nation.

Speaking during a sermon on Sunday, Bishop Agyinasare called on the Jean Mensa-led EC to “be very neutral in refereeing the elections this year.”

The electoral management body has come under a heavy public backlash over its resolve to go ahead to compile a new voter’s register amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) believes the timing is wrong, especially when the contagion keeps spreading at the community level ever since it was detected in Ghana mid-March. At the moment Ghana has recorded 6,808 cases resulting in 32 deaths with 2,070 recoveries as at May 25, 2020.

Bishop Agyinasare believes having all stakeholders onboard will help the EC make an informed decision while guaranteeing the safety and wellbeing of the Ghanaian populace.

“You must listen attentively to the stakeholders and bring everybody on board”, Bishop Agyinasare advised the EC.

He added: “Don’t say because you’re the Electoral Commission, you’re just going to do what you want”.

In his view, Ghana can only maintain the peace she is enjoying if all the stakeholders for the 7 December 2020 polls are brought on board.

“There are stakeholders that can either allow us to have this peacefully or not”, Bishop Agyinasare noted, urging the election management body to “bring all of them on board”.

Experts have expressed fear over biometric clock-ins, which is similar to the EC’s biometric registration system. They said the COVID-19 virus can easily spread through the system, although the EC has promised to use biometric wipes and sanitizers at the centres.

According to both Dr. Elizabeth Hughes of the United States Infectious disease Center and Prof. Manfred Breckenridge of Boston Medical Laboratories, the use of biometric devices is one of the means by which the virus is fast spreading.

Ivory Coast returns to school after easing of restrictions

0

With a total of 2,376 cases and dozens of new infections each day, Ivory Coast has yet to contain the virus.

But authorities are confident pupils can study together in safety after the introduction of extra hygiene measures.

In Abidjan’s Adjame neighborhood, children in backpacks queued to wash their hands under a teacher’s watchful eye before entering their school, where they sat just one to a desk with bottles of sanitising gel within reach.

“At first we were a little scared. When we saw that the protective measures were being respected, the fear went away,” said 14-year-old Samira Cisse.

Nearby countries are likely to follow closely whether the Ivory Coast’s decision to reopen schools causes a spike in infection. With millions of children still at home, aid agency Save the Children says many could face serious setbacks due to limited options for distance learning in parts of Sub-Saharan Africa.

The Ivorian education ministry told Reuters it appreciated the seriousness of its decision.

“We also have an imperative duty to ensure that the children entrusted to us can complete their education,” said ministry official Assoumou Kabran.

Reopening classrooms also means thousands of pupils and their teachers must be ferried back to boarding schools outside Abidjan, epicentre of the epidemic.

French teacher Patrick Yobouet, 38, waited with hundreds of others in a sun-baked stadium to board buses out of the city.

“We’re a bit worried as we leave because we don’t know if we have the coronavirus or not or if the children are contaminated or not,” he said.

Covid 19: NDC-UK & Ireland wish all Muslims Eid Mubarak

0

The UK and Ireland branch of  National Democratic Congress has sent its goodwill message to Ghanaian Muslims on Eid day, asking for God’s blessings for the country.

A statement from the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s camp was issued by the UK-Ireland Chairman of the party.

Alhaji Alhassan Mbala sends his good wishes to all Muslims in Ghana celebrating this year’s Eid Fitr after the 30-day long fasting during the precious Holy month of Ramadan.

Eid is a festive period when family members and friends gather to exchange pleasantries, gifts and make merry after the 30 days fasting and prayers.

This year’s celebration, unfortunately, did not take the usual routine because of the Covid-19 pandemic in Ghana and across the globe.

Social distancing measures are still being adhered to. This will affect the usual preparing of food and sharing of food items to neighbours.

“Despite the fear of the virus, Muslims have shown that they are people of strong faith in Allah to go by the usual fasting and prayers in the period of Ramadan,” he said.

“Although we live in hard times they have shown that their faith in Allah has never shifted nor dwindled.

“They believe that Allah, will heal his people and set them free from this pandemic worldwide.”

Muslims across the world celebrated the Annual Eid ul Fitr after completing a successful 30-days fasting of Ramadan.

For Mr Mbala, the ability to go through the month-long fasting unscathed amid the COVID-19, clearly paint a picture of resilience in times of adversity.

“May the Almighty Allah, “Al-Malik”, accept our prayers, fasting and supplications and may we continue to enjoy the peaceful political atmosphere that Ghana has been blessed with from ‘Al-Salaam’ since the fourth Republic, he said.

“Once again we wish you and your family, Eid Mubarak, as you are relaxing in joy, reflect of this year’s Eid celebration and kindly observe all the safety measures given.”

“All this shall pass soon,” he added.

You’ll send our party to opposition – Yaw Buaben Asamoa told

0

Communications Director of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Yaw Buaben Asamoa, has fiercely been criticized by a section of his party folks after they accused him of losing a debate against NDC’s Sammy Gyamfi on Adom TV yesterday.

The two lawyers had been invited by the Accra based TV station to discuss issues pertaining to the compilation of a new voters’ register in Ghana ahead of the December 7 polls.

Reacting to his performance, however, Asare Darko, a former Social Media Manager at the Jubilee House, suggested that the Adentan MP could send his own party to the opposition if he continues to be losing debates in subsequent radio and TV discussions.

Asare Darko, who could not fathom why Buaben Asamoah will allow Sammy Gyamfi to floor him in a TV discussion, described him as “most useless Communications Director” in the history of the ruling party.

“…He is the most useless Communication Director in our party. He is going to lead us into opposition. How can you let this small boy Sammy Gyamfi to floor you on national TV”, said Asare Darko on Facebook.

Police chasing suspected kidnappers shoot teenager performing ablution

0

A teenager, Sadiq Abubakar-Ibrahim, has undergone surgery at the National Hospital, Abuja after he was shot by policemen attached to the Special Tactical Squad.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the victim was performing ablution around 1 pm in his place of residence in the Gwarinpa area on Monday, May 18, 2020, when the policemen scaled the fence into the compound.

They were said to have opened fire on Sadiq, who took to his heel thinking that the invaders were armed robbers or kidnappers.

Our correspondent learnt that the policemen claimed that they were after a suspected kidnapper, who allegedly entered the house.

The policemen were said to have arrested all male occupants of the house, including the victim, and detained them at the Guzate Police Station.

Sadiq’s family member, Fatima Babashehu, told our correspondent that after much pleading, the policemen released the victim for medical attention.

She said the police had refused to check on the victim or pay his medical bills since he was admitted last week Monday.

Babashehu stated, “Sadiq’s mother was beside the fence of the house trying to make barbeque fire last Monday when she heard people shouting and jumping over the neighbour’s fence into their house and she ran into the kitchen and closed the door.

“The men started banging the door and asking the occupants to open the door, and when they opened the door, the men dragged everybody out and searched for other members of the household.

“While they went round, they saw Sadiq, where he was performing ablution beside the house, but on sighting them, Sadiq thought they were armed robbers, he got scared and jumped over the fence to the neighbour’s house on the right side, but the invaders shot him in his hand.

“They followed him and started shooting so the neighbours gave Sadiq up and the owner of the house and two of his sons were also arrested. They brought everybody out and gathered them at the dining area and took all the male occupants away.

“Nobody knew where they came from at first; we thought they were kidnappers or armed robbers, because of the way they scaled the fence; they were in mufti and jackets. We started making calls to find out who took our people and we were able to confirm that they were policemen.

“We made more calls and we were able to gather that they came from the Guzate Police Station. We learnt that they were tracing a kidnapper, who was demanding ransom, and his location showed our house.

“We were taken to the commander of the squad and he told us that the officers told him a different story when they got to the station. He said a kidnap took place in Lokoja but the negotiator was around our house and when they traced him, they saw the kidnapper jumping into the house. He said the officers told him that it was not a gunshot that injured Sadiq’s hand, but a barbwire on the fence, while he was scaling the fence into the neighbour’s house.

“When we got to the police station, we saw Sadiq bleeding without any medical attention and we pleaded that he should be taken to hospital, but we were chased out on the grounds that we could not teach them their job.

“We were later made to sign an undertaking that we were the ones, who requested to take him to hospital, and I told Sadiq’s dad that if we should leave him with the police, he would die; so, we decided to take him to hospital and we requested that a police officer should follow us, because it was a gunshot injury and no hospital would attend to him without a police report or officer.

“They agreed that an officer would follow us and we drove to the National Hospital, Abuja, but when we got there, the officer was asked to write a statement, but he refused and we were told that they would not admit Sadiq until the officer submitted his particulars and phone number so they could reach him.

“Sadiq’s uncle was the one, who wrote the name and phone number of the police officer and the division he is attached to before he was attended to; and the officer left immediately and we have not seen him or any other police personnel since then.

“Sadiq is billed for surgery because the bullet pierced his bone and shattered it. We have not heard anything from the police; they did not reach out to us to know about the hospital bill.”

When contacted, the FCT police spokesman, Anjuguri Manzah, referred our correspondent to the force spokesperson, Frank Mba.

When Mba was contacted, his telephone was not reachable and an SMS requesting his comment on the matter had not been replied to as of the time of filing this report.

Ghana has recorded 66 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 bringing the total number of cases to 6,683

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has described the rate of deaths in Ghana amongst Covid-19 confirmed cases as one of the lowest in Africa and the world.

Delivering the Guest of Honour’s address during a virtual Eid ul Fitr Prayers led by the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Nuhu Sharubutu, in Accra, the President said, “this has been so since the very beginning of the outbreak over two months ago.”

“Sad though any premature death is, the hard fact is that the rate of deaths in Ghana is very low, one per one million, i.e., 0.0001 per cent. One of the lowest in Africa and indeed in the world.”

“The number of positive cases stands at 6,683, out of 194,763 test conducted with 1,998 recoveries. This means that our positivity rate is 3.43 per cent, which again is one of the lowest in Africa and in the world.”

According to the President, “By the grace of God, Ghanaians are not dying of this virus in the numbers that were originally anticipated and feared.”

He said the covid-19 deaths recorded in Ghana so far have been persons with underlining causes and diseases.

“Furthermore, virtually all the 32 corona related deaths that have so far been were of persons with what the doctors call comorbidity, i.e., with other underlining causes and diseases. Most of them died within 24 hours of admission to hospital.”

Burna Boy reportedly arrested by police after noise complains from his neighbours

0

Nigerian music star Burna Boy has reportedly been arrested by the police after neighbours complained about noises coming from his house.

A video has been circulating online which purportedly shows some of Burna Boy’s neighbours complaining about the music star.

His father is also said to have been arrested; all though Pulse has not been able to confirm any of the reports.

In the video, a supposed neighbour complains of the music star and compares him to Nigerian footballer Odion Ighalo who he says also stays in that same neighbourhood without disturbing anyone.

It is also alleged that Burna Boy has not made complete payment for the land he built his house on, and reportedly owing N100M.
