The New Patriotic Party (NPP), in collaboration with other opposition political parties, has announced May 5, 2025, as the date for its much-anticipated “Save the Judiciary” demonstration. The protest is scheduled to begin at 1:00 a.m. and is aimed at defending Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo from what organizers describe as an unlawful attempt to remove her from office.

The demonstration is being organized in response to growing fears among legal and political circles about a possible move to oust Chief Justice Torkonoo. The NPP and its allied groups say they will resist any effort to undermine the independence of the judiciary, which they describe as a fundamental pillar of Ghana’s democracy.

According to the organizers, the protest will draw support from a broad coalition of opposition political parties, civil society organizations, legal professionals, and concerned citizens who believe that safeguarding the judiciary is essential to preserving the rule of law in Ghana.

A statement released by the NPP emphasized the need for Ghanaians to rise in defense of constitutional governance, adding that any attack on the judiciary threatens the country’s democratic foundations. The party urged supporters across the country to join the peaceful protest and make their voices heard.

The Chief Justice has recently come under public scrutiny, with speculation mounting about plans for her possible dismissal. However, critics argue that the alleged move is politically motivated and could set a dangerous precedent if allowed to proceed without due process.

As tensions mount, the “Save the Judiciary” demonstration is expected to serve as a crucial test of the public’s commitment to judicial independence and constitutional order in Ghana.
