Ferdinand | PoliticsGhana | May 17 | Samuel Brako-Amofa donates GHC10,000 to NPP Ablekuma Central Constituency

An aspiring Parliamentary Candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ablekuma Central Constituency, Hon. Samuel Brako-Amoafo on Monday, fulfilled the monetary pledge he made to delegates at the Emergency General meeting held on Sunday, May 14, 2023, at the forecourt of old Municipal Assembly Office.

As part of efforts to fix all the faulty vehicles working for the constituency welfare, the leadership of the party called on the party faithful to assist in that direction which led to other aspirants also making similar pledges.

However, Samuel Brako-Amoafo has led the way by being the first among all the pledgers to present his cash donation to the party.

The immediate past Constituency Treasurer’s donation was received by Nana Yaw Sarfo, the current Treasurer of the Constituency on behalf of the Executives.

The Constituency Chairman, Hon. Robert Kwame Dadzie expressed his gratitude and excitement over the swift manner in which Hon. Brako-Amoafo has fulfilled his promise.

It is also important to recall that the former Assembly Member for Gbortsui Electoral Area and one-time Sub-metro chairman has always made remarkable efforts in helping the party at this level.

A few months ago when the party was being evicted from their former office, Sam-Brako, as he’s popularly known, came to the party’s rescue by providing a fully furnished rented office space.

The Executive Committee of the party still awaits the fulfilment of other pledges to enable us to execute our targeted mission.

Ferdinand | PoliticsGhana | April 2 | ECG releases full list of areas to be affected by 2023 ‘dumsor’

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has released a power outage timetable due to scheduled maintenance work by the Ghana National Gas Company on the Atuabo gas processing plant.

The power outage schedule will begin on Wednesday, March 30th, and last until Friday, April 7th, 2023. The maintenance work will result in a shortfall of approximately 150 megawatts of power generation, which will reduce the total power supply for distribution by ECG.

According to a document obtained by GhanaWeb Business, the power outage schedule will affect the Accra, Volta, Ashanti, Eastern, Central, Western, and Tema regions of the ECG.

The regions have been subdivided into four blocs of A, B, C, and D. All areas within the region will experience outages according to a schedule that starts on March 30th and lasts until April 7th, 2023. The outages will occur at night between the hours of 6 pm and 11 pm.

The power outage schedule indicates that only areas within the A bloc will experience outages three times within the period. The other blocs will experience two rounds each per the schedule. The ECG has advised customers within the affected regions to take necessary precautions during power outages.

The statement released by the ECG reads, “We, therefore, entreat our cherished customers to bear with us while we work to improve service delivery to our customers. We assure our customers that the power supply will be restored as soon as the maintenance work is completed.”

The ECG has also assured customers that it will do its best to mitigate the effects of the power outage on its customers during the period of maintenance work. The ECG has advised customers to report any faults during the period of the power outages to enable the company to respond promptly.

Bank of Ghana dismisses Social media reports on the printing of GHC500 Coin

Ferdinand | PoliticsGhana | April 2 | Bank of Ghana dismisses Social media reports on the printing of GHC500 Coin

The Bank of Ghana has dismissed social media reports that it plans to introduce a GH¢500 coin, stating that it has no immediate plans to issue higher denominations for circulation.

Dominic Owusu, Director for Currency Management at the Bank of Ghana, debunked the reports as false and urged the public to disregard social media stories that suggest the Bank is introducing new currencies without an official statement.

He clarified that the introduction of new currency or withdrawal of existing notes and coins is always thoroughly planned and accompanied by extensive public and media education.

“When there is a currency issuance or change, the Bank of Ghana will come with an appropriate press release to inform the public. We saw on social media that the central bank will issue a ¢500 note or coin but the bank has not done any such thing. So it’s not true,” Mr. Owusu told Joy News in an interview.

In response to reports that the one pesewas coin is no longer legal tender and out of circulation, Mr. Owusu emphasized that the coin is still valid for transactions and must be accepted by customers.

He urged the public to help circulate the information that the one pesewa coin is still legal tender and must be used for transactions.

“We want the education out there for people to learn how to handle the cedi not to worn out. That’s why you journalists are here, and I want you to help the central bank in that quest. The bank is also doing its part and will make sure all is done to save the cedi,” he stressed.

The Bank of Ghana remains committed to educating Ghanaians on how to handle the cedi to prevent it from becoming worn out.

It is important to note that the Bank of Ghana has not issued any official statement regarding the introduction of a GH¢500 coin, and any information contrary to this should be disregarded.

Ferdinand | PoliticsGhana | April 2 |Nkwanta Hospital Health Officer in court for allegedly defiling 2 teenagers

Rick Azaglo, a 40-year-old public health promoter working with the Nkwanta South municipal hospital, is currently standing trial for allegedly having unlawful carnal knowledge of two teenagers in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region.

According to police reports, the accused person drugged the victims, aged 14 and 15, which caused them to pass out, in order to have sexual relations with their unconscious bodies.

The ordeal was revealed after the victims’ attitudes in school raised suspicion, and they were interrogated by the school authorities. The Nkwanta South social welfare was alerted, who subsequently reported the matter to the police.

The accused person was arrested and charged with the offense. Police prosecutor Detective Inspector Bright Nkansah informed the Jasikan circuit that the police retrieved exhibits that are yet to be forwarded to the FDA for analytical examination and report.

The accused person, Richard Azaglo, is yet to plead since the matter is under investigation.

The presiding judge at Jasikan circuit court, His Honour Alfred Kwabena Asiedu, advised prosecutor Detective Inspector Bright Nkansah to speed up the investigation.

Azaglo has been admitted to bail with the sum of GHS 10,000 and one surety and is expected to reappear in court on 13th April 2023. The case is being closely monitored, and more information will be made available to the public as the investigation progresses.

Ferdinand | PoliticsGhana | March 25 | Parliament approves 6 Ministerial Nominees presented by the Appointment Committee of Parliament

The House in a vote on Friday, March 24, 2023, has approved the appointment of six Ministerial nominees presented by the Appointment Committee in accordance with Article 79(1) of the 1992 Constitution.

Out of the 275 Members of Parliament eligible to vote, three were absent while the remaining 272 Members successfully cast their ballots.

Approved Ministers

The approved Ministers include Hon. K.T Hammond as Minister for Trade and Industry, Hon. Bryan Acheampong as Minister of Food and Agriculture, Mr. Stephen Asamoah Boateng as Minister of Religious Affairs and Chieftaincy, Hon. Stephen Amoah as Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry.

On Thursday, the Appointments Committee presented their report on the nominees to Parliament, which was followed by a vote that occurred March 24th, 2023. These appointments were made to fill vacancies that were created by the resignations of three previous Ministers.

Absentee MPs

Three Members of Parliament (MPs) were unable to participate in a vote on Friday to approve six persons nominated by the President of Ghana for appointment as Ministers, Ministers of State, and Deputy Ministers.

The absentee MPs were Mr James Gyakye Quayson, National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP for Assin North, Madam Sarah Adwoa Safo, New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Dome Kwabenya, and Mr Philip Atta Basoah, NPP MP for Kumawu.

Mr Quayson’s absence was due to a court injunction restraining him from carrying himself as an MP.

Meanwhile, Mr Basoah was initially reported as being on his way to the House, but the Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business in Parliament, Mr Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, informed the House at the end of voting that Mr Basoah could not make it on time to cast his vote.

As a result of Mr Quayson’s inability to participate, the total number of Minority MPs was reduced from 137 to 136. In addition, the absence of Madam Safo and Mr Basoah led to the number of Majority MPs, including one independent MP, reducing from 138 to 136.

Ghana is broke and must be saved from avoidable expenditures -John Mahama

Former President John Mahama

Ferdinand | PoliticsGhana | March 24 | Ghana is broke and must be saved from avoidable expenditures -John Mahama

Aspiring Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, says Ghana is broke and must be saved from expenditures that can be avoided.

Speaking at a public lecture on financing of political campaigns in Ghana, Mr. Mahama argued that it will not be feasible for the state to consider funding political parties in any form now, because of the bad economic conditions.

“Ghana today is broke. International credit rating agencies have placed us in junk status. Additional state financing can, therefore, not be a viable option on the table. Even if that becomes an option in the future, I recommend that we put in place an explicit Public Funding of Political Parties Bill in a bipartisan and inclusive manner”, the former president asserted.

He further recommended that should public funding of political parties be scaled up in the foreseeable future, then, an independent and credible institution must be selected to administer the state resources advanced to political parties.

“In that regard, a sharing formula could be established to ensure fairness, and specific disclosure requirements on beneficiary parties.”

Mr. Mahama is contesting his party’s presidential primaries on 13th May 2023, and according to key stalwarts of the NDC, Mr. Mahama is the presumptive flagbearer of the party, expecting him to win an overwhelming majority of the votes.

On corruption, Mr. Mahama who used the opportunity to launch a digital fundraising platform for his 2024 campaign said he will bring a new focus and determination to fight the canker.

RECOMMENDED:

“It is sad observing Ghana’s performance on the Transparency International Corruption Perception Index score card after many years of NACAP’s existence. This is not how we programmed NACAP to be. NACAP can do better! And NACAP must do better!”, he stated.

Former President Mahama says when he is sworn in as President again, in 2025, he will be coming to the job with priceless experience, and he will work hard to fix what is a broken nation and a fight against corruption.

“I want us to build the Ghana we want together by writing – not footnotes, not pages but – chapters in the anti-corruption history of our dear country Ghana. We must also uphold human rights, including freedom of expression and not be describing some journalists as terrorists.”

Ferdinand | PoliticsGhana | March 25 | I am very disappointed in the NDC MPs for voting in 6 ministerial appointees -John Mahama

Former President John Mahama has shown his displeasure against the Members of Parliament at the minority National Democratic Congress (NDC) side for voting in 6 ministerial appointees.

Read his Statement below:

A couple of weeks ago, our NDC group in Parliament announced a principled position not to approve any new ministers until the President has taken steps to significantly reduce the size of his government.
This position was supported by a broad section of Ghanaians and public advocacy groups.
Unfortunately, Ghanaians were sorely disappointed yesterday when several members of the Minority for some parochial and personal interest voted against the principled position adopted by the party.
I am also disappointed.
Those responsible for this betrayal must do some serious soul-searching and learn to place national interest over personal interest.
Equally disappointing is the President’s refusal to seize the opportunity to realign and downsize his bloated government when the NPP flagbearer hopefuls and the Chieftaincy minister resigned.
Clearly, in this time of crisis and excruciating hardships, President Akufo-Addo, his NPP administration, and some of our MPs are out of tune with the mood of the Ghanaian people.
I still believe as I said in Ho recently, that in this time of crisis, the government can still run efficiently with not more than 60 ministers.
For our grassroots members and all Ghanaians who are disappointed by this insensitivity, I urge you not to despair.
2024 offers us an opportunity to work hard to defeat this reckless government that seeks to destroy our democracy and the very livelihoods of Ghanaians- an opportunity for us to work and build the Ghana we all want from January 07, 2025.
