Tertiary institutions get ready to reopen – Disinfection exercise takes place

Preparations are underway for the reopening of 16 tertiary institutions in the country.

In line with that, a comprehensive strategy to disinfect the schools and make them safe and secure for reopening is currently underway.

Under the plan, the 16 institutions are billed to be disinfected in the coming week.

Meanwhile, a disinfection exercise was carried out at the University of Ghana in Accra yesterday under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Education in collaboration with Zoomlion Ghana Ltd.

Launching the strategy at the University of Ghana, the Minister of Education, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, said it followed a directive passed down from the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, for all tertiary and second-cycle institutions to be fumigated and disinfected before the final-year students returned to prepare and complete their exit examinations.

He said the ministry was committed and ready to support Zoomlion and other waste management companies to disinfect and fumigate basic, secondary and tertiary educational institutions in the country.

Dr Prempeh charged all the heads of educational institutions and municipal/district chief executives to engage with the respective directors of education and monitor the exercises in schools in their jurisdictions.

Launch

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, said the management of educational institutions would closely monitor the disinfection and fumigation exercises being carried out by Zoomlion to make sure they were successful and effective.

Similar exercises, he said, were carried out in government institutions and agencies as part of the fight against the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

Prof. Owusu, who doubles as the Chairman of Vice-Chancellors, Ghana, encouraged Zoomlion to tackle the exercise in earnest in order to achieve the objective for which it was set.

Effective work

The Managing Director (MD) of Zoomlion Ghana Ltd, Mrs Florence Larbi, gave an assurance that the company would do a good job to help curb the spread of COVID-19.

Background

At the recent Minister’s Weekly Briefing on COVID-19 to shed light on the phased easing of restrictions, the Minister of Education had said tertiary institutions would reopen to final-year students from June 15 for academic work to begin and end on July 24.

Final examinations, he said, would be conducted from July 27 to August 21.

He said SHSs would reopen to final-year students on June 22 for six weeks of academic work up to July 31, this year, after which they would write their final exams from August 3 to September 4, this year.

Meanwhile, second-year Gold Track students of SHSs would also be in school for six weeks, starting from June 22 to July 31, when they would proceed on vacation, he said.

In the case of final-year students in JHSs, Dr Prempeh said they would be in school for 11 weeks for academic work from June 29 to September 11, following which they would write the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) from September 14 to September 18, this year.

NPP National Council endorses Akufo-Addo flagbearer for 2020

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been endorsed as the flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) by the National Council of the party.

He is expected to be acclaimed as the flagbearer of the party on a yet-to-be-announced date.

The General Secretary of the NPP, Mr John Boadu, made this known to the media yesterday after the party’s National Council and National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings in Accra.

Endorsement

He said the National Council of the party endorsed President Akufo-Addo’s candidature after it accepted the report of the party’s National Vetting Committee which revealed that it was only President Akufo-Addo who had filed to contest as the flagbearer of the party.

“The National Council of our party has accepted the report of the National Vetting Committee that indicated that at the opening and closing of nominations for the presidential candidature of our party, it was only one person, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who filed.

“The National Council has endorsed that decision that Nana Akufo-Addo is the sole candidate of the NPP and very soon we will communicate to the general public his acclamation,” Mr Boadu said.

Primaries

Mr Boadu also announced June 20, 2020, as the date on which the party would conduct its parliamentary primaries in the 168 constituencies where it had sitting Members of Parliament (MPs).

The primaries were originally scheduled for April 18, 2020, but had to be postponed indefinitely due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

He said the primaries would be conducted in electoral areas, instead of the previous format where delegates congregated at one venue to vote.

That, he said, was to prevent the massing up of many people at one venue to help curb the spread of the COVID-19.

“The party has decided that each parliamentary primary will come off on June 20, 2020 in all the 168 constituencies where we have sitting MPs. These primaries will be held at the various Electoral Commission mandated electoral areas in order to ensure that we respect the measures put in place by the government to a product ourselves and prevent the spread of the COVID-19,” he added.

Mr Boadu said the party was convinced about holding successful primaries.

“We will later come up with rules and regulations guiding these parliamentary primaries and also the total list of members contesting on our ticket, as decided by the NEC,” he said.

Meeting

The NEC and the National Council meetings of the party were attended by the top brass of the party, including President Akufo-Addo, Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia, the National Chairman of the party, Mr Freddie Blay, as well as other national and regional executives of the party.

There were three separate meetings — the first being the regional chairmen meeting, followed by the NEC meeting and then the National Council meeting.

Analysis

President Akufo-Addo’s endorsement as the flagbearer of the NPP, as well as a new date for the parliamentary primaries, indicates that the stage is now set for the ruling party to slug it out with the biggest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), in the 2020 elections.

Although the NDC has a flagbearer, it is yet to select its running mate, while it also has about 20 constituencies where it has not elected its parliamentary candidates.

Majority of the mainstream parties, such as the Convention People’s Party, the People’s National Convention, the Progressive People’s Party, the National Democratic Party, the Great Consolidated Popular Party and the All People’s Congress, are yet to elect their national executives and flagbearers, as well as parliamentary candidates.

Currently, there are 26 registered political parties.

Fraudulent Election Comment: The Last Thing Mahama Can Do Is To Go To Court- GCPP Chairman

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of GCPP, Kofi Owusu Omar, has rubbished a comments made by John Mahama that he would not accept a fraudulent results in this year’s elections.

According to him, the “2020 election” is a done deal for Nana Akufo-Addo and the NPP and the last thing John Mahama can do is to go to court.

Speaking on Wontumi Radio and TV on Thursday, he noted that polling agents would be at the various polling centers to witness the voting process. So if you lose through cheating you have yourself to blame.

“The NDC has tested the grounds since January and have seen that they have lost the election in advance so they have started causing fear and panic.” He said

Chairman Omar said further that, all the emerging issues are pointer that President Akufo-Addo is genuine and all the corruption allegations leveled against him have proved futile.

According to Chairman Omar the importation of a fleet of busses to be distributed to the Senior High Schools may have influenced John Mahama’s recent derogative remark but that cannot influence the choice of about 80% to 90% Muslims who have reserved their votes for Nana Addo and can never have a change of mind.

Chairman Omar, again repeated the calls that, Dr. Bawumia should lobby for a law that will debar married Muslim men from severing their relationship with their partners anyhow.

Captaincy Is Not About Seniority – Coach Frimpong Manso

Rolling back the clock, on the eve of the 2019 African Cup of Nations the then head coach of the Black Stars, Kwesi Appiah stripped off the captaincy from Asamoah Gyan to Dede Ayew.

This caused a lot of brouhaha in the country and perhaps led to the worst performance of the Black Stars since 2008.

Kwesi Appiah has come under serious scrutiny after saying that the Black Stars captaincy should be rotated.

Former Black Stars player Frimpong Manso, who featured in the 1992 African Cup of Nations in Senegal shares his thoughts on the Black Stars captaincy saga.

In an interview with King Eben ‘The Boss Player’ on Wontumi Radio 101.3, Mayanga stressed on the way forward regarding to the captaincy of the Blackstars of Ghana.

“I don’t think captaincy should centre much on seniority, it must be the core mandate of the head coach to decide who has the capacity, capabilities and leadership qualities to captain the national team.” If you look at Liverpool, Van Djik came to meet a lot of players but he is the vice captain now.”

When asked whether the captaincy should be rotated as Kwesi Appiah thinks, he said ” I don’t believe rotation should be the best way to go. It must be given to a permanent and competent player.”

He indicated that art has helped him a lot and has become part of his life.

“The technique I used in executing Mr. Avle’s portrait is called Pyrography. Pyrography is the art of drawing with fire. I am currently able to pay part of my fees, rent hostel and do other things because of art. This shows that art is not bad at all as perceived by some parents in the country.”

He further urged parents not to force their children to pursue some specific careers especially when they show interest in taking arts as their profession.

“After school, most people are looking up to the government for employment but with art you can start something on your own. Therefore, Parents need to support their children who are into art with the tools they need to pursue their talent,” he said.

There Is Sanitizer Shortage Because John Mahama Is Drinking Too Much Alcohol- Wontumi

but former President John Mahama has been accused by the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party of consuming the product leading to shortages in the production of sanitizer.

“Alcohol is meant for sanitizer but John Mahama is drinking it. We are facing sanitizer shortage because John Mahama is drinking too much alcohol”, Mr. Bernard Antwi-Boasiako said on the Wontumi Morning Show.

His swipe at former President stems from his recent comment that the NDC will not accept the results of the 2020 general elections should it deem the process as unfair.

According to Mr. Mahama, the NDC has participated in all elections in the Fourth Republic and accepted defeat each time they lost.

Mahama warned that his party may not accept the results of the upcoming elections due to the disagreements between the NDC and the Electoral Commission (EC) on the voters’ register.

FM Stations Can Talk Freely; None Will Be Closed, No Business Will Be Collapsed Under My Next Gov’t – Mahama

Former President John Mahama has said his next government will be one that every Ghanaian, irrespective of their political persuasion, can freely express themselves or do business without fear.

Speaking at the flag-raising ceremony of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Accra on Wednesday, 10 June 2020 as part of the party’s 28th-anniversary celebration, Mr Mahama said: “As the leader and flag bearer of this great party, I come to you, the good people of Ghana, and on the occasion of our 28th anniversary, to once again confirm that the next NDC and John Dramani Mahama administration will guarantee you a stable, vibrant and safe democracy”.

He noted: “A democracy in which Ghanaians feel at peace to go about their daily duties without fear of arrest, harassment or death; a democracy in which Ghanaians can express themselves freely without fear of having their radio stations closed; a Ghana in which businessmen and women are not afraid of losing their businesses because they are perceived not to be supporters of the governing party”.

Mr Mahama said: “Ghana needs new jobs, new businesses, new ways of listening to one another and a new sense of unity”, adding: “Ghanaians are tired of the tensions associated with the parochial governance style of Nana Akufo-Addo”.

“My brothers and sisters, it is time to unite our country once again as one people, and resume our journey towards building our common future”, the former president said.

“Is that possible? I say Yes”, he answered.

“And I am leading the NDC to work together with you, all across this country, to deliver that and more”.
