Asiedu Nketia defends NDC’s participation in EC piloting registration

0

General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia has confirmed that he personally sanctioned the decision to partake in the piloting of the compilation of the voters’ register.

According to him, it was to enable the NDC to get first-hand information on the challenges in the exercise so that they can make a case.

Speaking on Okay FM’s Ade Akye Abia programme, he explained that the party will soon come out officially to state their concerns about the piloting of the registration exercise.

“Though we will not allow the compilation of the voters register to come off, we still have to follow what the Electoral Commission is doing so that as a party we will have first-hand information to make our case when it comes to our fierce resistance about a new register.

“And I don’t see anything wrong with the NDC taking part.

“However, we are going to ensure that the EC does not go on with its planned intention to compile a new voters register,” he added.

Piloting Of New BVR

The Electoral Commission (EC) on Tuesday, June 2, conducted a pilot voter registration exercise in all 16 regional capitals in the country.

The essence of the exercise, according to the EC, is to identify problems associated with the new voters’ register system, as well as its effect under various weather conditions and find ways of mitigating them.

A statement issued on Tuesday said all issues identified would be forwarded to the Commission at the national level for the necessary rectifications to be made before the commencement of the exercise at the end of the month.

“All Ghanaian citizens of 18 years and above and of sound mind are expected to register where they reside when the exercise begins; with either a Ghanaian passport or Ghana card as proof of identification or have two guarantors who have already registered as voters so they can register,” the statement said.

Observers Or Keen Participants?

Interestingly, leading members of the opposition party were present to oversee the process. Social media went ‘gaga’ when former NDC Member of Parliament for North Dayi, Mr. George Loh’s ID card popped up after participation in the pilot exercise.

To some, it was a move that was not in consonance with the position of the NDC.

But Mr. Loh explained that he participated in the EC’s pilot voter registration exercise on Tuesday to be sure of how the exercise was ongoing and does not lend credence to the fact that though the NDC is opposed to the new register, it was preparing its members to get ready to register.

COVID-19: Keeping JHS Students For 11 Weeks Dangerous – Minority

0

The Minority in Parliament has raised concerns over the decision by the government to keep final year JHS students in school for an 11-week period before they write their final exams.

Matthew Opoku Prempeh on Tuesday, June 2, explained that final year JHS pupils will stay in school for 11 weeks before they complete.

According to him, the duration will give the students and teachers ample time to complete all courses they were unable to cover before the COVID-19 pandemic.

But Speaking to Starr News, minority spokesperson on education Peter Nortsu said the long stay in school can expose the pupils to the virus.

The ranking member for the committee on education advocated for a shorter duration in school.

“Many of us have called for the resumption of schools for final year students…looking at the situation but some of us are not happy with the long time they are going to spend in school. So if they should even go back to school it should have been for 2 or 3 weeks before they write their exams.

“The danger is that at the basic level they are going to mix with people from different environment so the challenge is that what if somebody has the disease…so the longer they stay there, the more the danger of having the disease,” Mr Nortsu told Starr News’ Parliamentary correspondent Ibrahim Alhassan.

EC Suspends Pilot Registration Over ‘Technical Challenges’

0

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has called off a pilot registration of voters on day two and final day of the exercise in the Western Region due to technical challenges.

The EC is compiling the new register ahead of the December general elections over claims the existing register lacks credibility.

The piloting, according to the EC, is to afford them the chance to identify challenges with their systems and fix them before the mass registration begins later this month.

Western Regional Director for the EC, Angelina Tagoe, could not give further details as to why the exercise had been cancelled.

Western Regional Secretary for the NDC, Joseph Nelson told Empire News’ Emmanuel Ohene-Gyan the cancellation of the exercise vindicates his party’s position that the EC is not ready to undertake a nationwide exercise

“If the Electoral Commission cannot organise a simple pilot exercise in a city like Sekondi, how much more in a village, like Mumuni camp, the EC has simply failed and are not ready to compile a new register with just six months to general elections,” he said.

His counterpart from the governing New Patriotic Party and Assistant Regional Secretary, Rex Johnfiah also stated that the party was disappointed in the breakdown of the machines after having a successful exercise Tuesday which saw over 70 people registering.

“We want the EC to extend the exercise because what we observed was that there were no backups”, he revealed

The statement also said that provisions were being made to receive registered final year students who wished to use on-campus resources.

‘Arrangements are being made to receive registered final year students who may wish to relocate to the campuses of the University to make use of on-campus resources from June 15, 2020, till July 3, 2020, which is the end of the examination period’ – it added.

Meanwhile, makeup classes are being arranged for students who were cut out from the entire online teaching and learning programme as rolled out by the university due to network and other challenges.

‘All final year students who were unable to participate in the Online Teaching and Learning Programme, are expected back on campus from June 15, 2020. Make-up lessons will be from June 22, 2020, to July 10, 2020. Final examinations will be from July 18 to August 1, 2020’ – the statement stressed.

Ahead of the announcement by the university, the SRC President of the school, Isaac Agyemang had told #UniversNews that, coming to campus to do another 6-weeks of in-person lectures was going to be difficult for the ‘already frustrated’ final year students.

He, however, advocated for students in remote areas with bad internet connectivity to be allowed to come back to campus to complete the academic workload of the semester.

The University is expected to communicate the protocols to guide students who want to return to school in the coming days.

I used to smoke weed wrapped with Bible sheet – Kweku Baako reveals

5

Editor of the New Crusading Guide newspaper, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako Jnr, has made a startling revelation about an experience he was in prison in the early eighties.

According to him, he was a habitual weed smoker and sometimes smoked the substance wrapped with a sheet of the Christian prayer book, the Holy Bible.

He made the disclosure while contributing to a discussion on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’ Wednesday, June 3, 2020.

Speaking briefly about his prison lifestyle, Baako revealed his only inspiration while at the cells was to listen to radio, read newspapers and smoke weed.

“Kwame, that’s the only thing that keeps you going. It’s the oxygen of life. When you get a newspaper, it’s like a Bible or Quran has been handed to you. We even used the Bible to smoke weed”, he sarcastically told host, Kwame Sefa Kayi.

Apparently, the veteran journalist had appeared on the show and was giving his thoughts on what transpired at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters yesterday, when Bernard Mornah stormed there to write his statement following an invitation extended to him by the police.

The People’s National Convention (PNC) chairman, is being interrogated of an alleged inflammatory statement he made against the Electoral Commission (EC) amid the compilation of the new voters’ register.

Commenting on the subject, Kweku Baako said he preferred the police ignore Bernard Mornah and his associates as according to him, they were just making “ugly and empty noises” as has always been done in the country by political elements.

“To be honest, sometimes ugly noises, we should allow. I wish they ignore them, nobody has the capacity to do the things they threaten to do most of the times”, he said
