Going on an extended leave means you’re not needed – Labour expert

0
Mr. Daniel Yaw Domelevo

The auditor general of Ghana, Daniel Domelevo has been asked to proceed on his accumulated leave of 123 days as per the directive from the presidency.

The statement that was issued yesterday from the office of Communications Director at the Jubilee House, Eugene Arhin, stated that Mr Domelovo must take his accumulated leave of 132 working days effective Wednesday, July 1.

This has sparked a lot of discussions in the media space with some experts speaking against the government for compelling the auditor general, who has been critical of them to proceed on leave. With some also believing that should he proceed to go on leave, he would be replaced as the auditor general.

Labour relations expert, Austin Gamey speaking on the development has asserted that for anyone to proceed on such a long leave of 123 days, then it simply implies that individual is not needed in the organization and would be replaced.

He made this statement in an interview on the Happy Morning Show with Samuel Eshun on Happy 98.9 FM.

The labour expert noted that in such an extended leave period, another will take over your role and if “someone is doing something you were busy doing then, we don’t need you anymore.”

“If you go on such a long leave, what is your value to the organization?” he queried.

He proceeded to point out the fact that if a worker forfeits his or her leave in a particular year, that leave period is not moved to the following year but rendered void.”

Mr. Gamey advised the auditor general not to fight the president’s directive saying it might cause some confusion should he do so.

Confusion Rocks Registration Centre In The Ashanti Region over NPP vehicle conveying registration logistics [video]

0

As the new voter ID cards began this morning, many are the problems facing the process as we reported earlier. Some have to do with the registration machines and the observation of the COVID-19 protocols.

A video sighted by reportghana.com clearly shows the displeasure of the people as some of the Electoral Commissions machines were carried by a party’s car to the registration centre

An N.P.P. car was said to have allegedly conveyed machines, chairs, tables, and other materials of the E.C. needed for the registration to the center.

This did not go well with others who think it against the law and did not hesitate to show their displeasure.

Voters Register: EC official seizes cell phone of Multimedia reporter

0

Information reaching reportghana.com indicates that an official of the Electoral Commission (EC) at the Akotsi Polling Station at Gomoa in the Central region has confiscated the cell phone of a reporter with the Multimedia Group Limited.

According to the Adom FM reporter, Seth Ankomah Adjei, the EC official pushed him and forcefully took his mobile phone for taking a video of agitations between registrants and one individual believed to be demanding monies from some registrants to skip the queue and quickly get registered.

He noted that the EC official took his cell phone despite telling him he was a reporter with the Multimedia Group.

His phone he says, after being seized for several hours has been given back to him.

The EC official, according to him, is a headmaster of a school in the area.

Reports by the Adom FM reporter indicated that the EC official appeared not to care about the activities of the unidentified man said to be taking monies from some of the registrants to jump the long queue.

“Nothing wrong with EC using my NPP-branded car to convey registration material” – Sly Tetteh

0
Mr Sly Tetteh, the New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary candidate for Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfrom has said he sees nothing wrong with his private car being used to convey registration materials of the Electoral Commission to registration centres, as part of the voter ID card registration exercise.

He told Kwabena Prah Jnr (The Don) on the Ghana Yensom show on Accra 100.5FM on Tuesday, 30 June 2020 that all the political parties are expected to help the EC carry out the exercise hence, he cannot be faulted for making his car available to the EC to convey its materials.

The opposition National Democratic Congress’ parliamentary candidate for the same constituency, Mr Alexander Ackuoko, raised a protest against the development at the registration centre.

Mr Ackuoko told Kwabena Prah on the same show that the EC had indicated that it was well prepared for the exercise.

“While I was going round, I saw an NPP-branded Pickup rat one of the centres and they said they carried the EC’s logistics to the centre but I said: ‘No. It cannot be done’. This is the work of the EC, the EC has said they are fully prepared for the exercise and, so, NPP’s car cannot be the one to be bringing logistics and materials to the centres. This is not right,” he told The Don.

But Mr Tetteh, who is also the CEO of the National Youth Authority (NYA), said: “I am not even aware that my car is being used because I had just woken up from bed. I went round all the centres in the constituency and, so, I slept very late last night. But I see nothing wrong if my car is being used. As political parties, we can help the EC to carry out its work.”

MFWA cites Ken Agyapong, Sammy Gyamfi for using “indecent language on radio”

0
A report put out by the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), as part of its election 2020 Campaign Language Monitoring project, has mentioned some Ghanaian MPs and political officials from the two main political parties, the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), for using indecent and abusive language on radio.

The report is the first of several to be issued by MFWA throughout the election period under its“Issues Not Insults”campaign.

The monitoring and reporting of indecent language is part of the project,“Promoting Decent Language and Issues-based Campaigning for Peaceful Elections in Ghana in 2020.”

The maiden MFWA report was based on the monitoring of 597 programmes on 20 selected radio stations between June 1 and 14, 2020.

The NPP MP for Assin Central, Mr Kennedy Ohene Agyapong; NDC MP for Juaboso, Kwabena Mintah Akando; and NPP MP for Manhyia North, Collins O. Amankwah, were cited for passing insulting and offensive comments on radio.

According to the findings of the report, Mr Agyapong was “found to be the most abusive among all the other individuals cited during the monitoring period” and also “made unsubstantiated allegations, threats and expressions calling for confrontation.”

Mr Agyapong made “eleven out of the 51 indecent expressions recorded during the monitoring period.”

The monitoring report also cited the National Communication Officer of the NDC, Mr Sammy Gyamfi; the National Youth Organiser of the NPP, Nana Boakye (Nana B); the flag bearer of the United Freedom Party (UFP), Nana Agyenim Boateng; and some party officials at the regional level, for making unsubstantiated allegations and other indecent expressions on radio.

“Overall, officials and affiliates of the NDC recorded the highest number (17) of indecent expressions, closely followed by their counterparts in the NPP with 15 incidents. The other political parties whose affiliates were cited are the UFP, with two indecent expressions, and the Convention People’s Party (CPP) with one incident,”the report stated.

The monitoring project also captured a number of radio stations on which the indecent expressions were recorded.

The report showed that “Accra-based Oman FM recorded the highest number (16) of indecent expressions mainly on its National Agenda programme. Power FM, also based in Accra, followed with 10 indecent expressions, all of which were recorded on the station’s Inside Politics programme.”

“The host of the Inside Politics programme on Power FM, Mugabe Maase, was also found to have used the highest number of indecent expressions among the hosts of radio programmes that were monitored. Eleven other radio stations were also cited in the report,” MFWA stated.

Fulanis threaten to sue EC if they’re stopped from registering

0
The leaders of the Fulani community in Ghana have said that they will sue the Electoral Commission if any of the election management body’s officials attempts stopping any Ghanaian Fulani, who is eligible to vote, from taking part in the ongoing voter registration exercise.

A statement issued by the group, Tabital Pulaaku International Ghana Chapter, and co-signed by General Secretary Yakubu Musa Barry and Organiser Ahmed Barry, said the rights of Fulanis have been trampled for far too long as far as national exercises such as the voter registration are concerned, adding that they “will not sit down” for the same thing to continue.

“We are always intimidated, maltreated and always denied our right but not this time”, the group said in the statement, stating: “This is a strong warning to EC officials and individuals who will prevent Ghanaian Fulanis from registering or going through the process”.

“They will have to prove that in court”, the statement said.

Apart from the EC, the Fulani community also warned all the representatives of the various political parties who will be policing the process that “they should never attempt to deny any qualified Ghanaian Fulani” the chance to “go through the process”.

The statement urged all qualified Ghanaian Fulanis “to go out in their numbers to register”, and advised them “to adhere to all the protocols and guidelines surrounding the registration”.

We want a Ghanaian election, not a West African Election – Akufo-Addo

0

President Nana Addo-Dankwa Akufo-Addo has warned off non-Ghanaians to stay away from both the compilation of a new Voters Register and the 7th December, 2020 general elections.

He says anyone non-eligible to register or to vote but who flouts the law will have the law to deal with.

The President who served the warning while addressing the nation Monday evening, said the Election of 7th December, 2020, must be a Ghanaian election, and not a West African Election.

In that vein, he encouraged all eligible voters (Ghanaians of 18 years and above) to register with the Electoral Commission to enable them vote to elect a president and a parliamentarian of their choice.

He also discounted allegations of plots to rig the election, saying he won’t be president of a rigged election but one with the free mandate of Ghanaians.
