In a major youth employment boost, YEA signs MoU with Ghana National Fire Service to recruit and train 5,000 young Ghanaians as Fire Assistants under a one-year agreement.

In a strategic move to tackle Ghana’s rising youth unemployment and enhance emergency response services, the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) has signed a one-year agreement with the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) to recruit 5,000 young people as Fire Assistants.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was officially signed on Friday, May 3, 2025, in Accra, with the Chief Executive Officer of YEA, Malik Basintale, representing the agency. The Minister for the Interior and the Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment were also present at the signing ceremony, signaling strong government endorsement of the initiative.

The collaboration marks a significant step toward addressing two of Ghana’s pressing national challenges: youth joblessness and fire safety. According to the YEA, this initiative not only opens up job opportunities but also reinforces public institutions by providing much-needed human resources for disaster response.

In a press release, the YEA described the programme as part of its broader mandate to create sustainable job opportunities while contributing to national development. “This partnership underscores our commitment to empowering Ghanaian youth while strengthening public safety. Recruits will be equipped with relevant skills that will benefit them even beyond the duration of the programme,” the statement said.

Under the terms of the MoU, the Ghana National Fire Service will be responsible for training and supervising all recruits. Upon successful completion of their training, the new Fire Assistants will be deployed to various fire stations and operational units across Ghana’s 16 regions.

While the recruitment process has not yet been opened, the YEA has assured the public that details on eligibility, application procedures, and timelines will be communicated soon through its official platforms.

The GNFS has in recent years faced challenges with staffing, particularly in rural and high-risk areas. With increasing reports of fire outbreaks—ranging from domestic fires to market blazes—the need for more boots on the ground has become more urgent. The recruitment of 5,000 Fire Assistants is expected to help bridge that critical gap and provide quick response teams at the community level.

This recruitment programme is also consistent with the YEA’s core operational model, which focuses on partnerships with public and private institutions to provide temporary employment and skill development for young people. The agency, which operates under the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations, has previously collaborated with other entities such as the Ghana Police Service, Forestry Commission, and the National Health Insurance Authority.

CEO Malik Basintale emphasized that while the positions may be temporary, the training and experience participants gain will make them more competitive in the job market. He encouraged young people to take advantage of the opportunity when recruitment officially begins.

“The youth are the backbone of our nation. We must create pathways for them not just to survive, but to thrive. This partnership with the Fire Service is one of several interventions we will be rolling out in 2025,” Basintale said at the event.

The Ministers present echoed similar sentiments, praising the inter-agency collaboration and promising continued support to ensure the programme’s success. They also highlighted how such initiatives align with Ghana’s national development goals, particularly those related to youth empowerment, job creation, and resilience in disaster management.

As the country prepares for another dry season—a time when fire incidents tend to spike—the timely deployment of these new Fire Assistants is expected to enhance community preparedness and response capacity.

Ghanaians are now awaiting further details on the application process, but optimism is high among the youth who see this as not only a job opportunity but also a meaningful way to serve their communities.

Business mogul and philanthropist, Alhaji Seidu Agongo, has donated ₵500,000 to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (MahamaCares) to support quality healthcare delivery and improve access for underprivileged Ghanaians.

The donation, made during the official launch of the fund at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC), is one of the largest single contributions to the initiative so far. The MahamaCares fund, spearheaded by former President John Dramani Mahama, aims to provide financial support for critical health cases, especially for patients who cannot afford the high cost of medical treatment.

Alhaji Agongo, speaking at the event, commended the vision behind the fund and described it as a “bold and compassionate step” toward closing the gap in Ghana’s healthcare system. He urged other business leaders, philanthropists, and the general public to contribute generously to ensure the fund’s sustainability.

“The true strength of a nation lies in the health of its people. This is not just a donation — it’s an investment in life and hope,” he said.

Former President Mahama also expressed deep appreciation for the gesture, stating that the fund would save lives and restore dignity to families struggling with hospital bills.

The ₵500,000 donation from Alhaji Seidu Agongo is expected to support a number of urgent medical interventions in the coming months.

Ferdinand  | PoliticsGhana | June 22 |  Alleged Stabbing Incident Between Kennedy Agyapong and Bawumia Supporters Sparks Tension in NPP

Tension is brewing within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as an alleged stabbing incident between supporters of Kennedy Agyapong and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia occurred in Kumasi during the party’s Thank You Tour following its 2024 election defeat.

According to reports, a heated exchange between the two rival camps escalated into a violent confrontation. A known supporter of Kennedy Agyapong was allegedly stabbed by a member of Dr. Bawumia’s team during the chaos. The victim is currently receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where sources confirm he is in stable condition.

The incident, which is believed to have happened behind closed doors, has not yet been officially addressed by the police. However, the clash has drawn widespread criticism from Ghanaians on social media, with many expressing concern about the deepening cracks within the party.

TOP STORY

Some political watchers say the NPP’s internal divisions are becoming more apparent, especially as both Kennedy Agyapong and Dr. Bawumia are expected to battle for leadership ahead of the next election cycle.

The party’s Thank You Tour, intended to foster unity and appreciate its grassroots supporters after the electoral loss, is now being overshadowed by violent factional disputes. Analysts have called on party leaders to take urgent steps to restore calm and unity within the rank and file.

The alleged attack has also renewed public debate on the need for political parties in Ghana to instill discipline among their followers and maintain peace, even in times of defeat or leadership contests.

As the NPP continues its tour across the country, eyes will be on how the party addresses these growing tensions and whether it can present a united front going forward.

Ferdinand  | PoliticsGhana | June 22 |  NPP, Opposition Parties Set May 5 for ‘Save the Judiciary’ Demonstration to Defend Chief Justice Torkonoo

The New Patriotic Party (NPP), in collaboration with other opposition political parties, has announced May 5, 2025, as the date for its much-anticipated “Save the Judiciary” demonstration. The protest is scheduled to begin at 1:00 a.m. and is aimed at defending Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo from what organizers describe as an unlawful attempt to remove her from office.

The demonstration is being organized in response to growing fears among legal and political circles about a possible move to oust Chief Justice Torkonoo. The NPP and its allied groups say they will resist any effort to undermine the independence of the judiciary, which they describe as a fundamental pillar of Ghana’s democracy.

According to the organizers, the protest will draw support from a broad coalition of opposition political parties, civil society organizations, legal professionals, and concerned citizens who believe that safeguarding the judiciary is essential to preserving the rule of law in Ghana.

TOP STORIES

A statement released by the NPP emphasized the need for Ghanaians to rise in defense of constitutional governance, adding that any attack on the judiciary threatens the country’s democratic foundations. The party urged supporters across the country to join the peaceful protest and make their voices heard.

The Chief Justice has recently come under public scrutiny, with speculation mounting about plans for her possible dismissal. However, critics argue that the alleged move is politically motivated and could set a dangerous precedent if allowed to proceed without due process.

As tensions mount, the “Save the Judiciary” demonstration is expected to serve as a crucial test of the public’s commitment to judicial independence and constitutional order in Ghana.

Former President John Dramani Mahama has made a significant personal contribution to Ghana’s healthcare sector by donating six months of his salary to the newly launched Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as Mahama Cares. The donation was announced during the official launch of the programme at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) in Accra.

The Mahama Cares initiative is designed to provide financial support for critical healthcare services and improve access to quality medical treatment for Ghanaians, particularly those from vulnerable communities. The former president’s gesture is seen as both symbolic and practical, reinforcing his commitment to strengthening Ghana’s healthcare system.

Speaking at the launch, President Mahama emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in supporting public health. He urged well-meaning Ghanaians, corporate organizations, and development partners to contribute to the fund in order to build a more resilient and inclusive health system.

The Ghana Medical Trust Fund aims to address key challenges within the country’s medical infrastructure, including funding gaps, emergency care, and support for under-resourced health facilities. It is also expected to finance health-related interventions that directly impact patient outcomes and access to essential services.

Healthcare professionals and stakeholders at the launch commended Mahama for his leadership and dedication to the welfare of the Ghanaian people. The move has been widely praised as a timely intervention amid growing calls for sustainable investments in the country’s health sector.

Ferdinand  | PoliticsGhana | April 29 | Three Suspected Gold Smugglers Arrested by GoldBod Taskforce, Remanded by Circuit Court

Three Indian nationals have been arrested in Kumasi for illegal gold trading and smuggling. Learn how GoldBod and National Security are cracking down on unlicensed gold dealers in Ghana.

Three suspected gold smugglers have been arrested by the security taskforce of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) and remanded into custody by the Achimota Circuit Court. The suspects, identified as Goutam Katriya (35), Miraj Sarvaych (22), and Manash Damani (42), are all Indian nationals operating within Ghana’s gold trading sector.

The arrests were made at a private residence around Atinga Junction in Kumasi, which had reportedly been converted into an unauthorized gold trading center. Acting on a tip-off from a whistleblower, the GoldBod taskforce conducted a raid that uncovered illegal gold buying activities allegedly intended for smuggling.

According to National Security’s Director of Investigations, Chief Superintendent Osman Alhassan, the operation led to the seizure of 1.9 million Ghana cedis, 4,500 Indian rupees, 4.363 kilograms of gold, two money-counting machines, a CCTV recorder, and an Indian passport. The suspects, who are believed to have operated in Ghana for over a decade, failed to produce any valid licenses, residence permits, work permits, or tax documentation for their activities.

Initial investigations suggest that Unique MM, the company under which the suspects operate, is owned by Musah Salifu—a Ghanaian citizen allegedly acting as a front for Goutam Katriya, the actual beneficial owner and decision-maker of the company. Authorities say none of the three individuals hold any legal authorization to deal in gold under Ghanaian law.

In court on Monday, April 28, the suspects were remanded into custody for two weeks and are expected to reappear on May 12, 2025. They are currently being held by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).

Speaking at a press conference in Accra, Chief Superintendent Alhassan stressed the economic damage caused by such illegal operations. “These suspects smuggle gold through unapproved border points into India, and this has serious consequences for the Ghanaian economy,” he said. “This arrest marks the beginning of GoldBod’s intensified crackdown on illegal gold trading and smuggling.”

In a related development, GoldBod has reiterated its directive requiring all foreign nationals involved in the gold trade to exit the market by April 30, 2025. It also mandates that all gold transactions must be conducted in Ghana cedis and at the Bank of Ghana Reference Rate.

Any breach of these directives constitutes a criminal offense under the GoldBod Act, 2025 (Act 1140), as outlined in an official press release dated April 23, 2025.

Authorities have assured the public that further investigations are ongoing and that more arrests are expected as part of efforts to sanitize the gold trading sector.

Kennedy Agyapong and Abronye DC spar during the NPP “Thank You Tour,” revealing internal tensions as the party seeks unity after its 2024 election defeat

Prominent New Patriotic Party (NPP) figures Kennedy Ohene Agyapong and Abronye DC clashed publicly during the party’s nationwide “Thank You Tour” in the Western Region. What was intended as a unifying gesture after the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 elections instead exposed lingering tensions within the party ranks.

RELATED STORIES

Abronye DC used the platform  to criticise certain party members whom he accused of sabotaging his campaign efforts. He expressed bewilderment that those who had undermined him were now calling for reconciliation and peace.

In response, veteran MP Kennedy Agyapong stressed his commitment to party unity but did not mince words. For the sake of peace, he said, he would not retaliate. Yet he pointedly observed that many of those now seeking harmony “were not even qualified to visit my house,” a remark underlining his frustration. Agyapong further noted that he had contributed far more financially to the party than those “talking anyhow,” implying that true loyalty should be measured by action, not words.

This public exchange highlights the deep fissures that emerged in the wake of the NPP’s electoral loss.

While the “Thank You Tour” aims to heal divisions and rally supporters ahead of 2028, the debate between Agyapong and Abronye DC suggests that reconciliation will require more than ceremonial gestures.

Grassroots members and senior executives alike will need to address grievances, acknowledge contributions, and rebuild trust if the party is to present a united front in future contests.

Ghanaian Cedi Appreciates Further to GH¢14.55 Against the Dollar: What’s Fueling the Rise

Ferdinand  | PoliticsGhana | April 28 | Ghanaian Cedi Appreciates Further to GH¢14.55 Against the Dollar: What’s Fueling the Rise

The Ghanaian Cedi continues its strong recovery, now selling at GH¢14.55 to $1 on the interbank market. Discover the key factors driving the Cedi’s appreciation and what it means for Ghana’s economy.

The Ghanaian Cedi (GHS) is showing renewed strength against the U.S. Dollar (USD), appreciating to GH¢14.55 to $1 on the interbank market, according to official reports on Monday, April 28, 2025.

This positive movement follows a series of strategic economic interventions by the Bank of Ghana (BoG) and improvements in the country’s macroeconomic fundamentals. Analysts suggest that the Cedi’s performance is helping to rebuild confidence among investors, businesses, and the general public after months of currency volatility.

A key factor contributing to the Cedi’s appreciation is the Bank of Ghana’s tight monetary policy. The BoG has maintained high policy rates to curb inflation and stabilize the currency, attracting more foreign exchange inflows and boosting the demand for the Cedi. In addition, Ghana’s gross international reserves have seen significant improvement, giving the BoG the capacity to intervene in the forex market when necessary to protect the Cedi.

Another major boost to the Cedi comes from Ghana’s positive reviews under the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Extended Credit Facility (ECF) program. The government’s commitment to structural reforms and fiscal discipline has reassured investors and improved market sentiment. This has led to increased foreign direct investments and enhanced the country’s economic outlook.

The government’s efforts to reduce the country’s import bills have also played a role. Policies aimed at promoting local production have lessened dependency on imports, thereby reducing pressure on foreign currency demand. Furthermore, seasonal inflows such as remittances from Ghanaians abroad, export earnings from cocoa and gold, and revenue from tourism have all contributed to strengthening the Cedi.

The appreciation of the Cedi is expected to bring significant benefits to the Ghanaian economy. A stronger Cedi could ease inflationary pressures, making imported goods more affordable for consumers. It would also help in reducing the country’s foreign debt servicing costs, while simultaneously boosting investor confidence. However, economists warn that sustaining the gains will require consistent fiscal discipline and careful economic management, as external shocks or policy missteps could quickly reverse the trend.

$58M National Cathedral Scandal, Fuel Hikes Led to NPP’s 2024 Defeat – Dr. Bawumia

0

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia blames the $58M National Cathedral controversy and sudden fuel price hikes for the NPP’s 2024 election defeat, dismissing religious and tribal factors.

Takoradi, Ghana — Former Vice President and 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has directly linked the party’s defeat in the 2024 general election to key economic and governance issues, notably the controversial $58 million National Cathedral project and sudden fuel price hikes.

Speaking during the NPP’s nationwide Thank You Tour in Takoradi, Dr. Bawumia vehemently dismissed claims that religious or tribal factors contributed to the party’s downfall — assertions that had surfaced following the Mike Oquaye Committee’s internal review.

Instead, he cited voter anger over the mismanagement of public funds and last-minute economic shocks as the real reasons behind the electorate’s rejection of the NPP.

“The National Cathedral, which we were unable to complete after $58 million was sunk into it, caused a lot of rage in the public,” Dr. Bawumia emphasized. “Also, three days before election day, the price of fuel went up. When I heard it, I thought it was a joke. The drivers were angry at us.”

Dr. Bawumia further explained that these grievances fueled a wave of protest votes, severely impacting the party’s chances.

He expressed relief that the committee’s findings ruled out religion and ethnicity as major factors in the electoral loss, a crucial point considering earlier speculations about his religious background influencing voter behavior.

Background

The National Cathedral project, initially launched with ambitious promises, became a source of national controversy as funding transparency and project execution came under intense scrutiny. The revelation that $58 million had been spent without delivering a completed structure outraged many Ghanaians, contributing to broader criticisms of government mismanagement.

Additionally, the unexpected spike in fuel prices just days before voting added to public frustration, especially among commercial drivers and commuters, further denting public goodwill toward the NPP.

What This Means for the NPP

Dr. Bawumia’s remarks signal a shift in the party’s internal discourse, pushing leaders to focus on tangible governance failures rather than attributing defeat to external biases. As the NPP plots a course for recovery ahead of the 2028 elections, restoring public trust and addressing economic concerns appear to be emerging priorities.
