Kennedy Agyapong shows up in court to answer contempt charges

Embattled Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Agyapong, is in court Friday morning to answer contempt charges brought against him by a justice of the High Court.

Kennedy Agyapong failed to show up in court for the first hearing on Monday, September 14, 2020, with his lawyers arguing that he was personally not served.

Justice Amos Wuntah Wuni of the Accra High Court thus issued a fresh order for him and he has honoured it, according to TheGhanaReport.

The portal reports that Kennedy Agyapong arrived at the court premises thirty minutes ahead of the scheduled 9:00 am for hearing to start.

He arrived in the company of his lawyers – Kwame Gyan, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Ralph Agyapong, and Yaw Akrasi Sarpong.

Kennedy Agyapong is facing charges of contempt after an erratic outburst against a judge who granted an injunction against him over a disputed piece of land.

The loudmouth MP said “You are a stupid judge. I will face you. I am not Anas to take bribe from you. I will deal with you” on Net2 TV.

He has already apologised for his conduct which has been interpreted by lawyer Maurice Ampaw as an attempt to escape punishment from the judge.

His appearance in court this morning is interesting because he has filed an application at the Supreme Court seeking to prevent the High Court from hearing the case.

Kennedy Agyapong’s legal representatives in a petition to the Supreme Court advanced the argument that the High Court does not have jurisdiction over the case.

2 Nigerians share experience on discrimination, education, living standard in Ghana

0

Ghana has become a popular destination for international degree-seeking students, mostly within the West African region. According to reports, out of a large number of international students Ghana welcomes each year, over 70 percent are Nigerians. The rest are from Côte d’Ivoire, Mali, Gabon, Togo, Benin, Congo, among others.

Every academic year, Nigerian students travel overseas to study for various reasons; some, to countries that offer them quality degrees and give them exposure to better career prospects, and others, to escape from occultism in tertiary institutions in the country.

In this episode of the Study Abroad Series, freelance journalist and vlogger, Selorm Helen takes you to Nigeria where Sampson and Hannah talk about why they came to Ghana, how living and studying in Ghana has shaped their lives, and a lot more.

Both Hannah and Sampson pursued their undergraduate degree programmes in Ghana at the African University College of Communications, a private university affiliated to the University of Ghana.

For Sampson Chukwudi Akunna, when the only option left for him was to travel to Ghana in 2014 for his undergraduate study after facing two rejections from the school of his choice in Nigeria, it was hard for him. He had never dreamt of studying abroad, particularly in Ghana.

“I never wanted to study in Ghana. But I was denied admission at UNILAG. Traveling out of home was a difficult thing for me. I was a mummy’s boy and I was always at home. So, when I had to leave home for the first time, that really hit me hard,” Sampson disclosed.

Hannah Karis Zeak on the other hand loves to explore so, schooling in Ghana was not an option but a choice. She came to study in Ghana in order to “gain a better understanding of the world, find a new interest, learn a different language, experience different culture and perspective” and to broaden her horizon.

Speaking about the pros and cons of schooling in Ghana, both Sampson and Hannah touted Ghana’s education system as “quality” and well advanced but extremely expensive for students in same West African region.

“Studying in Ghana as a foreign student is expensive. The general cost of living is high and you will need about 100 cedis or more to prepare a good soup while it’s relatively cheaper in Nigeria. But it’s worth it because of the quality of education,” they both said.

One thing they, however, hated was prejudice towards Nigerians in Ghana.

Sampson shared a bad experience about how some Ghanaians hated and treated them with contempt because of the long-held perception that Nigerians “are criminals” and recounted how he and some colleagues were verbally assaulted by a Ghanaian landlady when they went in search of accommodation as foreign students in Accra.

“We went to seek for an apartment at Adabraka. The way the landlady addressed us… we meant no harm despite the fact that some Nigerians have this swag about them doesn’t mean they’re criminals. She told the agents she doesn’t want Nigerians in her house. We told her we aren’t bad people but she insisted and kind of raining abuses on us too. We had to go to somewhere else and another landlady did same thing to us,” Sampson narrated.

Would they recommend Ghana to other international students despite the bad experience?

Despite the harsh treatment from some Ghanaians, Sampson and Hannah said they will highly recommend Ghana to other Nigerian students seeking to study abroad in Africa. They cited high-quality degrees and flexible academic curriculum as reasons Ghana universities should be patronised.

Another major reason is safe environments provided by managements of Ghanaian universities making occultism unlikely on campuses.

“I like the education environment because the Nigerian environment of studying is quite harsh. This thing about occultism is very high in Nigerian schools here. But in Ghana there is a quiet and conducive environment to learn and that I really appreciate,” Sampson explained.

Owusu Bempah makes u-turn on US elections, says Trump will lose

On August 12, 2020, Isaac Owusu Bempah, the Leader of the Glorious Word Power Ministries International made a bold prediction about the upcoming elections in the United States of America.

In the thick of Kamala Harris’ appointment as the Running Mate for Democrats candidate, Joe Biden when experts were predicting that her appointment was going to swing votes in favour of Joe Biden, Owusu Bempah dropped a huge prediction.

He prophesied that incumbent President Donald Trump was going to win the elections despite the polls saying otherwise.

According to Bempah, Trump’s victory hinged on one thing and that if he does not give federal approval to homosexuality in the US, he was going to win by a landslide.

Bempah said that Trump was God’s anointed and he was going to be used as a tool to save the world from the antichrist.

“Donald Trump will win the elections. God saw something in his heart before he made him president so if he doesn’t turn his heart away from God, Trump will win the elections. If he behaves like Saul, then it will be difficult for him. God made him president and physically and spiritually he’s still on that seat”.

“Pastors and people around him should make sure he doesn’t get a change of heart because at some point he nearly gave in to pressure to accept gayism. If he continues walking in the path of God, the elections will be his. Trump is supposed to spend eight years on the throne. God gave Trump to America and the world. I have made up my mind to speak to Archbishop Duncan-Williams to advise Trump not to divert his heart”, he said.

But the tables have turned this morning with Trump being on the losing side.

Bempah said on Okay FM this morning that Biden has overtaken Trump and is destined to win the elections.

In a vision Owusu Bempah experienced this morning, an angel appeared to Trump and took away the keys to the American presidency.

“Things have changed spiritually. There is a place in the spiritual world called Paradise where Abraham is president. Abraham and his people in that Paradise decide for the world”.

“Something has happened in the US elections and Abraham and his people have held a meeting. The outcome of that meeting did not go in Trump’s favour. It’s because Trump’s heart has turned away from God. So Abraham and his people have sent the decision from that meeting to the Watchers(Watchers are unique angels who are sent to carry out duties on earth). The Watchers have sent the decision to the Almighty God. A final meeting is being held over the decision as I speak to you”

“I saw myself at the White House and Trump was sitting on a throne with a big key. The heavens opened and I saw an object descending onto the earth. The object took the key from Trump and Trump went down on his knees begging. It means Trump’s kingship has left him. I have called Archbishop to inform Paula White and the people close to Trump that the thing has left his hands. If he doesn’t change his heart, he will lose. The defeat has come but confirmation will come from the almighty God”, he narrated.

NDC To Expand Water, Electricity for All – Asiedu Nketia

The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has assured deprived communities across the country that John Mahama and the NDC will expand access to water and electricity to benefit all communities by 2025.

Addressing a mini durbar of chiefs and the people of Kajaji in the Sene East Constituency on Thursday, Mr. Asiedu Nketia said John Mahama will also ensure that all abandoned projects including roads, educational and health facilities, are completed to improve the quality of the lives of people.

The NDC General Secretary assured Ghanaians that the party’s manifesto contains policy proposals and projects that have been well considered and packaged to address the priority needs of Ghanaians.

Referring to the NPP and President Akufo-Addo’s desperate rush to implement many of the NDC’s manifesto promises, Mr. Asiedu Nketia said their action is a reflection of their desperation for power, adding that “these were the same people who were mocking John Mahama when we stepped out to listen to the people and appreciate their desires before putting the manifesto together.”

He also stated that President Akufo-Addo and his government have been a failure, and now seeking to run a campaign based on lies.

Earlier the NDC delegation led by 2020 flagbearer John Dramani visited Atebubu Amantin, where they paid a courtesy call on the chief, Osabarima
Nana Owusu Ababio II and his elders.

Other members of the delegation are the Campaign Manager Professor Joshua Alabi, former Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, a former Minister for Power and MP, Dr Kwabena Donkor, National, Regional and Constituency executives.

Don’t trust Mahama, he can’t fulfil campaign promises – Asenso-Boakye jabs

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary aspirant for Bantama in the Ashanti Region, Francis Asenso-Boakye, has cautioned Ghanaians against trusting John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress.

According to him, many of the 2020 campaign promises by Mr Mahama are merely a smokescreen to win votes on December 7, 2020.

“The record of John Mahama and his NDC in government points to the fact that they cannot be trusted to fulfil their numerous campaign promises, and this must form the basis for their rejection in December,” state-owned Daily Graphic quoted Mr Asenso-Boakye in a report.

Mr Asenso-Boakye, also a Deputy Chief of Staff, made the comments when he addressed campaign volunteer groups for the NPP in the Bantama constituency on Monday, September 14, 2020.

According to a Daily Graphic report, Mr Asenso Boakye stated that “Prior to the 2008 election, one of the flagship promises of the NDC was to institute a one-time premium for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). But we can all attest to the fact that throughout their eight years in office, they failed to deliver on that promise. So, they have a history of unfulfilled promises. That makes it difficult to trust them.”

“For a political party that questioned the possibility and viability of Free SHS, isn’t it mind-boggling that they are now promising to extend the policy to include private Senior High Schools?”, Mr Asenso is quoted in the report.

According to the report, Mr Asenso-Boakye also touted the NPP government’s achievement when he stated that unlike the NDC, the NPP has fulfilled all of its campaign promises.

“We have delivered on the Free SHS pledge, even though John Mahama and the NDC did not believe in it. We have fulfilled One District One Factory pledge, Planting for Food and Jobs, among others,” the report quoted Mr Asenso-Boakye further.

GHc1,000 should be the minimum wage for local players – Mohammed Polo

0
1978 Africa Cup of Nations winner, Mohammed Polo has recommended a minimum salary of one thousand cedis for players in the Ghana Premier League.

Polo in an interview with S.K Ntim of Bryt in Koforidua indicated that such a wage structure will help in retaining the quality players in the Ghana Premier League.

The mass exodus of players in the domestic top-flight league has affected the standard of the Ghana Premier League and also the performance of Ghanaian teams in Africa.

Most players who turn out to perform well join other clubs on the continent or move to Europe for greener pastures.

Ghana has been ranked as the second exporter of footballers (311 players) by a survey conducted by CIES report in 2020.

Adding his voice to the growing concern, the former Accra Hearts of Oak hero said: “Players should not travel abroad before they can earn better wages. It’s sad to see local players traveling to nearby countries like Ethiopia, Tanzania, Togo and others because of meager salaries they receive.”

“I think there should be a minimum wage structure for the players. Their qualities are not the same and so we should pay them based on the quality they possesses. If Ethiopia and other Africa countries are paying good salaries for players why can’t we do it here? He quizzed.

“I hope should be on the upcoming players because they are the future so their welfare must be key to us as a country. At least the players should earn GHC1,000 and above. That sought of GHC200 and GHC300 is not correct” he told Bryt FM in Koforidua.

Kennedy Agyapong challenges jurisdiction of court hearing his contempt case

The Member of Parliament for. Assin Central in the Central Region, Kennedy Agyapong, has filed a suit at the Supreme Court challenging the jurisdiction of a High Court holding contempt charges over him.

The suit has been filed a day before he is due to appear before the High Court tomorrow [Friday] after being hauled there for insulting a trial judge at a Labour Court.

Mr. Agyapong made a statement deemed contemptuous in the case in which Susan Bandoh and Christopher Akuetteh Kotei had sued him and three others in a land dispute.

On Monday, September 14, 2020, the High Court was forced to adjourn the contempt case because Mr. Agyapong did not appear in court due to the failure of the registrar of the court to personally serve him with the summons in the land dispute case.

The judge, Amos Wuntah Wuni, explained that the court summons was sent to the office of Kennedy Agyapong and to the clerk to Parliament but was unable to reach him personally.

According to him, efforts by the court to serve the MP personally as required in cases of contempt proved futile.

Justice Wuni, therefore, issued an order of substituted service, directing that the court summons be pasted on the notice board of the High Court and the Hollywood building which houses Net 2 TV and Oman FM.

But in his suit, Mr. Agyapong says he has not been “duly served with any writ of the summons and a statement of claim on any court processes [relating to the contempt].”

Because of this, he argues that because he had not been served with the writ of summons, he could not have “engaged in any act intended to scandalise the said Land Court or the presiding judge.”

Mr. Agyapong argued further that it would have been easy for him to have been served because of his regular appearances on Net 2 TV and his availability in Parliament.

The MP admits that he got “involuntarily and uncontrollably upset” when processes for the land case at the Labour Court 2 were posted on his property at Adjringanor.

This notwithstanding, he has apologised to the labour court, the presiding judge and the Chief Justice.

Since he feels his words were not directed at the court that summoned him and in lieu of the apology, the MP insists that “the said court is not seized with the jurisdiction to order the applicant to appear and answer why he should not be severely punished for contempt of court.”

Amantin Health Centre will be upgraded into Polyclinic — John Mahama

0

National Democratic Congress (NDC) Flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has reiterated a pledge he first made in 2016 to upgrade the Amantin health centre into a polyclinic.

President Mahama who, in the 4th Republic, is credited to have an unparalleled record in providing health infrastructure across the country within a first term, promised the chiefs and people to upgrade their Health Centre.

Unfortunately, the governing NPP administration that won the 2016 elections abandoned the NDC planned blueprint of expanding the community’s health facility.

Speaking to the Chiefs and Elders of Amantin in the Bono East Region on Thursday, the former President said:
“In 2016 I came before you the Chiefs and people and made a promise to build you a polyclinic. It is a promise I remain committed to and will honour when I become President.”

The NDC Presidential Candidate also urged the people to participate fully in the planned population census in 2021, explaining that it will confirm that their population qualifies them to have their own district, and he will ensure that they become a district and get all the development that comes with being a district, such as a district hospital, police station among others.

The former President also informed the gathering that he would build an agricultural mechanization centre equipped with tractors, ploughs, boom sprayer etc. to provide services to the farmers.

He explained that the farmers can pay for the services after they harvest their crops. He also expressed confidence that this intervention will encourage young people to take up farming.

He further pledged to provide a dining hall and other facilities at the Amansie Senior High School.

The Chief of Amantin, Osabarima Nana Owusu Ababio II, speaking through his linguist asked that the 2020 elections be conducted in an atmosphere of peace.

President Mahama is on a three day tour of the Bono East Region.

Don’t be deceived by the ongoing sod-cutting of projects – Nzema Akropong Chief to voters

0

The Divisional Chief of Nzema Akropong in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region, Nana Adu Kwame II has charged eligible voters not to be deceived by the ongoing sod-cutting of projects being undertaken by President Akufo-Addo and his government.

Eligible Ghanaians will go to the polls and elect their President and Members of Parliament (MPs) for the next four years on December 7, 2020 but some Ghanaians are criticizing the current administration for embarking on sod-cutting of projects at this point in time instead of commissioning of projects.

The next to join these critics is the Divisional Chief of Nzema Akropong.

Addressing the Vice Presidential Candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman on Wednesday, September 16, 2020 at Asasetre lorry park in the Ellembelle Constituency as part of her four-day rescue mission tour to Western Region, Nana Adu Kwame II, the Divisional Chief of Nzema Akropong state that the NPP government has nothing to offer Ghanaians and the good people of Ellembelle.

He urged the gathering not to fall for the Akufo-Addo-led government’s on-going sod cutting of new projects and retain them come December 7.

“The NPP government has nothing to offer you so if you don’t know Zongo just go to the North”, he reminded the gathering.

Nana Adu Kwame II quizzed President Akufo-Addo what did he do in the last three and half years and now going round the country to cut sod for projects.

“We have just three months to the election and you now cutting sod. What were you doing. What were you doing the past three and half months. We don’t use three months to go to election to cut sod ?”, he asked President Akufo-Addo.

He added, “we have three months to election and they are now busy going round to cut sod, you put pickaxe in your vehicle and you get here you come out from your vehicle and starting cutting sod, nobody here should be deceived”.

The outspoken Chief fathomed why people to universities and complete and come home without getting work to do.

He, therefore seized, the opportunity to commend former President John Mahama for promising to legalise Okada business in this country when elected into power.

“Right now my headache is that today if you go to university and poly and complete you don’t get work to do and the good news is that when John Mahama comes to power, he will legalise Okada business to be more lucrative so we have to vote for him, Okada riders must vote for him”, he stressed.

“…and we have many people unemployed now. So why would you protest the Okada thing?” he questioned NPP members.

Nana Adu Kwame II took the opportunity to appeal to women in the area to vote massively for John Mahama for selecting a woman as his running mate and stated that Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman would be the next Vice President in Ghana after December 7 polls.

He also applauded women for continuing to help men.

“…you cook for us, you fetch water for us and also women have time to go politics, if you fail this women (Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman) because John Mahama if becomes president she will join him and if it happens, you women will be happy and your lives will be better”, he told the women.

He lauded John Mahama and Emmanuel Armah Kofi-Buah for promising to upgrade the Asasetre Market into a modern status.

“John Mahama and Armah Buah have said if they come to power, they will construct an ultra-modern market for women at Asasetre because what you are currently in, anytime the rain falls, it beat you so if someone is coming to build a new one for you, what should you do for the person, you vote for the person”.

He also commended Mr John Mahama for doing so many things in Ellembelle District than any President.

He said it was John Mahama who constructed the Atuabo Ghana Gas Processing Plant, constructing Agona Nkwanta to Elubo road, constructing All Bokazo to Atuabo oil enclave road.

He added that it was John Mahama and Emmanuel Armah Kofi-Buah who first constructed CHPs compounds in Ellembelle District of which his community also benefited.

“John Mahama is the man who says and he does it, he has done it before in Ellembelle and he has track records here, he brought Ghana Gas, he constructed Agona Nkwanta to Elubo road, he constructed Alla Bokazo to Atuabo road”

“A time came when we do transit before reaching Eikwe hospital and the transit here means, unless you take a canoe to cross the river on Eikwe road before taking another commercial vehicle to Eikwe hospital but today the bridge you see over the river, it was John Mahama’ and his NDC who did it”, he recounted.

“What I will say again is that it is only the NDC that comes to power and think about we Nzemas, when they were in power they were the first to build so many CHPs compounds in Ellembelle and they even built one for my Community, a time came before you will take a sick person to hospital we have to carry on a hammock before a person can get access to health care at Axim or Eikwe, but today we have so many CHPs compounds all over in Ellembelle and it was NDC who did that is John Mahama and Emmanuel Armah Kofi-Buah”.

He emphasized that, “John Mahama and Armah Buah have people at heart, they think about human being and these are the people we should vote for and not those that have done nothing”.

On behalf of the Eastern Nzema Traditional Council, Nana Adu Kwame II took the opportunity and appealed to Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman to liaise with John Mahama to build the delayed Atuabo Freeport when elected into power to create jobs for the youth.

“I was the one who performed the libation for the commencement of the Atuabo Freeport so we are appealing that when John Mahama comes to power he should build the Atuabo Freeport for us so that the youth will get work to do”, he urged.

On her part, the Vice Presidential Candidate Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman thanked the Chiefs and people of Asasetre enclave for welcoming her in their numbers.

She therefore promised that the next NDC government would build an ultra-modern market complex for the good people of Asasetre and its environs.

She also advised them against politics of insults and continue to live in peace and harmony.
